Sometimes—but ARM is not automatically cheaper for a 24/7 YouTube loop. Compare current plans with the same region, billing period, transfer allowance, and usable CPU performance, then test the exact stream you intend to run. AWS publishes an ARM price advantage for some comparable EC2 instances, but neither that claim nor an older encoding study establishes that an ARM VPS will cost less for your particular loop.
What determines whether ARM costs less?
The processor label alone is not a useful price comparison. A low monthly VPS charge can be offset by limited data transfer, overage charges, storage costs, or the time required to configure and maintain the stream. The cheapest plan that can sustain your setup cannot be identified without knowing the provider and region, stream profile, software, and whether the video is re-encoded.
Compare plans that are available in the same geography and billing context. Include:
- Monthly price and billing terms: Compare the same billing period, and check current availability and regional pricing.
- Included resources: Record vCPU count, storage, and transfer allowance, along with any limits or overage terms.
- Actual workload: Identify the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and whether your software re-encodes the video or sends an already-encoded file onward.
- Operating effort: Account for setup, monitoring, interruption recovery, and ongoing administration—not just the VPS invoice.
What the AWS figures do—and do not—show
AWS says Graviton-based EC2 instances cost up to 20% less than comparable x86-based Amazon EC2 instances. That is an AWS claim about comparable EC2 instances, not a universal ARM discount, a third-party VPS comparison, or a result guaranteed for continuous YouTube looping. Amazon Lightsail’s published Linux public-IPv4 bundles provide a separate cost example, but not a matched ARM-versus-x86 comparison:
| Lightsail plan | Published price | Listed resources |
|---|---|---|
| 2 GB Linux public-IPv4 bundle | $12/month | 2 vCPUs, 60 GB storage, 3 TB transfer |
| 4 GB Linux public-IPv4 bundle | $24/month | 2 vCPUs, 80 GB storage, 4 TB transfer |
These are AWS’s published figures retrieved October 3, 2026, not recommendations for a particular encoder workload. AWS notes that transfer allowance can vary by region. Check the current Lightsail pricing page for your location and account conditions.
Encoding performance depends on what your loop does
A 2021 IEEE study, “Where to Encode: A Performance Analysis of x86 and Arm-based Amazon EC2 Instances,” tested selected Graviton2 Arm and x86 EC2 families with FFmpeg and x264/x265. The authors reported time and cost savings of up to 33.63% in selected experiments. The result depends on codec, bitrate, and preset; the study’s recommendations differ across tested cases, including cases favoring x86. It is historical evidence about specific experiments, not a current ranking of ARM and x86 VPS plans or a forecast for every looping setup. IEEE study (2021).

It also matters whether the VPS is encoding video or relaying a compatible, already-encoded file without changing its video. Those are different workloads, and the cited study does not quantify the difference for your setup. Check what your chosen software actually does, then measure the target workload on the plans you are considering rather than inferring performance from architecture or advertised vCPU count.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse YouTube’s settings to define the stream profile
YouTube’s published encoder guidance specifies the output sent to YouTube; it does not prescribe an ARM or x86 CPU, a VPS size, or a universal minimum for prerecorded loops. For ordinary streaming, YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate encoding, and specifies a 2-second keyframe frequency (not over 4 seconds). Use the bitrate row for your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one example as a rule for all streams. YouTube live encoder settings.
| Example stream profile | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps, H.264 | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 6 Mbps |
These are examples from YouTube’s recommended bitrate table. Select the applicable row in the current guidance for your intended output, then test the complete stream—including audio and representative movement—before relying on it. YouTube also advises monitoring stream health.

Include continuous outbound transfer in the cost
A VPS sends data to YouTube for as long as the stream runs. Estimate the transfer for your chosen bitrate before choosing a plan: at a constant 10 Mbps, for example, the stream sends about 108 GB in a 24-hour day before protocol overhead. That arithmetic is an estimate, not a provider billing measurement; actual usage can differ. Compare your estimate with the provider’s included transfer and regional terms, and account for possible overages. AWS’s Lightsail page explicitly notes regional variation in transfer allowances.
Check content and monetization rules separately
A continuous loop is a broadcast format; it does not by itself make a channel eligible for monetization. YouTube says monetized content should be original and authentic, and its policy identifies mass-produced, generic, or repetitive content as inauthentic. The policy applies to live streams. YouTube’s notice says it renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” on July 15, 2025, to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible under the existing policy. Review the current YouTube channel monetization policies; a loop format alone cannot establish eligibility.

When a VPS is the right fit
Self-hosting can suit someone willing to select a provider, configure the encoder or relay, check transfer usage, and handle recovery if the process or stream stops. There is no universally cheapest ARM or x86 plan established by the available provider examples or benchmark. Compare current matched plans, run your actual workload, and include the value of your own setup and maintenance time.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube loop, StreamNeo is a managed alternative: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on. Each slot includes one always-on YouTube stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality-based tiers. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Compare the service’s current terms with your complete self-hosted cost; it is a convenience option, not proof of a lower price. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
