Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to play a text-file playlist as one input, then encode that input to YouTube Live using settings suited to your chosen codec, resolution, frame rate, and upload connection. The playlist works reliably only when its files have compatible streams and timing; test the complete output before relying on it for a nonstop channel.
1. Prepare compatible music files
Before writing the playlist, check that every listed file exposes the same streams and uses matching codecs and time bases. The concat demuxer does not make files with different layouts or properties compatible. This matters when combining music videos from varied sources.
- Inspect the files and choose a consistent video and audio profile for the playlist.
- If stream layouts, codecs, or timing differ, normalize the files first. The FFmpeg-user mailing list describes transcoding playlist items to matching properties as a practical approach, not an official guarantee: Oliver Fromme’s 22 September 2024 discussion.
- Check duration metadata, especially for truncated files or files whose duration may only be estimated from bitrate. Incorrect durations can cause timestamp artifacts when the demuxer sequences files.
2. Create the FFmpeg playlist file
Make a plain-text file, for example playlist.txt, with one file directive per item, in the order you want them to play:
file 'music/track-01.mp4'
file 'music/track-02.mp4'
file 'music/track-03.mp4'These filenames are illustrative. Paths with spaces or special characters must be quoted or escaped correctly. Keep files in a predictable location and use paths that the FFmpeg process can access.

Optional format-detection header
You may put ffconcat version 1.0 on the first line to enable automatic format detection. It must be exactly that text, with no extra spaces or byte-order mark. If you use the header, save the file as plain text with the first bytes matching that line.
Understand safe paths before changing the default
The concat demuxer’s default safe behavior rejects paths it considers unsafe, including absolute paths and protocol-like paths. Disabling it permits any filename, which can be necessary for some path setups but removes that restriction. Do not add -safe 0 as a routine fix without considering which paths the playlist contains. 3. Choose the right concatenation method

FFmpeg’s FAQ distinguishes these approaches: use the concat filter when re-encoding is needed, and the concat demuxer when compatible inputs allow concatenation without re-encoding. They are not interchangeable shortcuts; choose based on the files and the output you need. See the FFmpeg FAQ.
Correct a known duration problem
Concat timing is based on each file’s duration: FFmpeg adjusts timestamps so the first file starts at zero and subsequent files follow the preceding one. If a file’s duration is wrong or unavailable, the concat demuxer supports a per-file duration directive to override it. Use an override only when you have a reliable duration; a guessed value can simply replace one timing problem with another. 4. Set the outgoing YouTube Live profile
The playlist describes the media input; your outgoing encoder still needs to meet YouTube Live’s ingest guidance. YouTube lists RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant-bitrate encoding, and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions when selecting the profile for your stream.
Choose bitrate for the output, not just the source files

These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not guarantees of stability or universal settings. Its guidance says bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; choose a quality your available upload connection can reliably sustain and run a speed test. A high video bitrate is not useful if the connection cannot maintain it.
Set audio for the channel’s mix
For stereo, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps in its advanced settings. For 5.1 audio, it lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps, and says AAC is required for 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS. Use the channel’s actual audio layout when choosing settings rather than declaring a stereo source to be surround.

Use the stream key from Live Control Room carefully
Configure FFmpeg to send to the ingest destination and stream key provided for the YouTube broadcast. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in a playlist, public script, screenshot, or shared log. Enter the key through the method appropriate to your operating system and FFmpeg setup, and verify the destination and key before starting the encoder. The precise command depends on your FFmpeg build, input streams, chosen codec, and account’s Live Control Room setup, so a single command should not be treated as universally tested.

- Run a representative test using the actual playlist, output profile, and connection you intend to use.
- Include audio and video movement similar to the planned stream; YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Confirm that the playlist advances across file boundaries and that audio remains present and in sync.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and messages during the test and while the event is running.
- If the output fails or shows artifacts, check file compatibility and duration data before changing bitrate or ingest settings.
YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages. Its encoder guidance is operational advice, not a promise that any one profile or connection will remain stable.
6. Clear music rights for live use and replay
A technically successful stream does not establish that you have permission to transmit the music. Confirm that your rights cover the specific recordings and compositions, YouTube livestreaming, and any replay or archive you make available, for each relevant territory. The technical guidance cited here does not identify a licensor or establish your rights; obtain permissions that match your use before building a channel around a catalog.
