How to Set OBS to Play Indian Music Videos from Multiple Folders on YouTube Live

Use OBS’s VLC Video source to build a playlist from local files in multiple folders, configure loop or shuffle, connect YouTube Live, and test video, audio, and stream health before going public.

To play local Indian music videos from multiple folders on a YouTube Live stream, add the files to OBS’s VLC Video source, set the playlist to loop or shuffle, and connect OBS to a YouTube Live event with its stream key. OBS does not document automatic recursive folder scanning for this source, so add the files you want explicitly. Before broadcasting, test playback and confirm you have the rights to stream every video and its audio.

What you need before setup

  • OBS Studio and VLC: OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. Match their architectures; OBS specifically notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See the OBS media sources guide.
  • Local video files: This workflow is for files on your computer, not a playlist of videos hosted on YouTube.
  • YouTube Live access: Verify that your channel can stream before preparing the event. YouTube says a channel must be verified, must not have had live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance.
  • Streaming rights: A file saved on your computer is not automatically cleared for rebroadcast. Check rights for the recording, composition, music video, territories, live transmission, and any archive.

Add videos from multiple folders to an OBS playlist

  1. Install OBS Studio and VLC, ensuring the applications have matching architecture.
  2. In OBS, select or create the scene that should show the videos.
  3. In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video. Create a new source or select an existing one.
  4. In the source properties, add the desired video files to its playlist. Select files from each folder as needed; OBS’s guide does not promise automatic recursive discovery of every file beneath multiple folders.
  5. Choose the playback behavior. Turn on Loop Playlist to restart when the list ends. Turn on Shuffle Playlist to randomize playback rather than follow list order. OBS documents loop on and shuffle off as the defaults.
  6. Arrange and resize the source in the preview so it fits the scene. Check the audio in OBS’s mixer and preview more than one playlist item to catch missing audio, unsupported files, or other playback problems.

The VLC Video source is designed for a list of media items. OBS notes that VLC uses its own libraries for extended media support; supported formats can therefore differ from the formats listed for the standard Media Source. If files are moved or renamed after you add them, check the playlist paths and update the entries.

Connect OBS to a YouTube Live event

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live event. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how to prepare a stream.
  2. In OBS, open Settings and then Stream. Select YouTube as the service if available. Otherwise, choose the option to use a stream server URL and enter the server URL supplied by YouTube.
  3. Copy the event’s stream key from YouTube Studio into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key as private: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your event.
  4. Start streaming from OBS and check the incoming picture, sound, and stream health in YouTube Studio before relying on the broadcast or promoting it.

YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion. Its live encoder guidance recommends CBR encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, and lists supported video and audio codecs. Choose resolution and bitrate that your upload connection can sustain; a setting that exceeds available upstream capacity can lead to unstable delivery. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the appropriate values for your chosen output.

Clear music and video rights before going live

YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have all necessary rights for live content, including music rights involving artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. Permission for one element may not cover every element in a music video or every use.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It may show a warning and replace the stream with a placeholder; if the content remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. YouTube also says that even if you licensed third-party material, the rights owner should add your channel to its Content ID allowlist to help avoid interruption. Its guidance states: “If you’ve licensed third-party content to use in your stream, ask the owner of the content to add your channel to their allowlist through Content ID.” Read YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

A successful test or absence of a warning is not proof that your full playlist is cleared. Keep documentation of the permissions covering each video, audio recording, composition, territory, live transmission, and any saved replay.

Test the playlist and troubleshoot common issues

Before the public broadcast, run a representative test with the same scene, playlist, audio, and connection you plan to use. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health and messages during the event.

  • VLC Video is missing from Sources: Confirm VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS. OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  • A playlist item will not play: Check that the file still exists at the path recorded in OBS, then remove and re-add it if it was moved or renamed. Try another file to determine whether the issue is limited to one item.
  • Video plays but there is no sound: Check the clip’s audio and OBS’s mixer during preview. Test another playlist item; audio tracks or file support may differ between files.
  • Playback stops after the last item: Enable Loop Playlist in the VLC Video source properties.
  • Items play in an unexpected order: Check whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled. Turn it off for list order.
  • YouTube shows no incoming stream: Confirm OBS is using the selected event’s server URL and stream key, and that you started streaming in OBS. Check the event’s status and messages in YouTube Studio.
  • Stream health is poor or unstable: Review YouTube’s warnings and lower the output resolution or bitrate to a level your upload connection can sustain. Use the recommended two-second keyframe interval and CBR guidance in YouTube’s encoder settings.
  • A copyright warning appears or the feed is interrupted: Review the identified material and your permissions. Contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting where you have a license; do not assume a local copy or a prior successful test establishes permission.
