A black screen that appears exactly between lessons usually points first to the playback source, playlist, or scene—not automatically to YouTube or the internet. Compare OBS’s preview and a local recording with YouTube’s Live Control Room preview to find where the picture first disappears, then follow the matching fix below. Without your stream’s logs or recording, the precise cause cannot be identified in advance.
Find where the picture first disappears
Check the same lesson boundary in order: OBS preview, a local recording if available, YouTube Live Control Room preview, and public playback. This is a practical way to locate the failing stage; YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance separately discusses encoder output, dashboard errors, local archives, connections, and viewer reports.
- Black in OBS and the local recording: investigate the active scene, source visibility, and file or playlist playback.
- OBS and the recording look right, but Control Room is black or reports an error: inspect the Live Control Room Health Indicator and encoder output.
- Broadcaster previews are healthy, but only some viewers see black video: check whether the issue is limited to one viewer or a shared network before changing encoder settings.
Note whether the gap happens at every lesson boundary, only when the playlist restarts, after a scene change, or unpredictably. YouTube advises comparing the encoder output, dashboard, and local archive. A report from one viewer more likely points to that viewer’s device or connection; reports from viewers on one shared network suggest investigating that network, while reports from many viewers on different connections can point back to the encoder. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide explains these branches.
If OBS or the local recording goes black
One lesson file: check Media Source
In OBS, select the scene containing the lesson, then open the Media Source properties. Confirm the correct file is selected and the source is enabled and visible. Check Loop if the file is meant to repeat. Also inspect Show nothing when playback ends: OBS documents that this option hides the source when playback completes, so an unintended end-of-file state can leave the scene without video.

Several lessons: check VLC Video and visibility
For an ordered playlist, inspect the OBS VLC Video source, confirm the intended files and order, and check Loop Playlist if the list should restart. Review Visibility Behaviour as well: playback can continue, pause, or stop when the source is not visible. Confirm that the intended scene is active and the source remains visible across each transition. VLC must be installed for VLC Video to be available in OBS.
OBS documents looping and visibility controls, but does not promise gapless transitions between separate lesson files. If the gap recurs precisely at every boundary after you check the source and playlist, one possible workflow is to edit the lessons into a continuous reel and test that file; this is not a guaranteed repair. OBS’s Media Sources documentation was dated 2022-01-11, so labels can differ in newer versions. See the OBS Project Media Sources guide.

Test before restoring the 24/7 feed
After changing a setting, make a local recording or short test stream long enough to include a complete lesson boundary. Confirm the picture and audio through the transition before applying the change to the continuous broadcast.
If OBS is healthy but YouTube is black or reports an error
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and read the Health Indicator messages alongside their timestamps. YouTube documents errors involving stream format, bitrate, audio, and video configuration. Match the fix to the specific message instead of changing several settings blindly. Check the encoder settings recommended for your selected resolution in YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance.

Do not copy a bitrate number without accounting for resolution, frame rate, codec, and the upload capacity your connection can sustain. YouTube recommends checking the encoder’s direct output, dashboard errors, CPU load, and local archive; if those look healthy, investigate the outbound connection. OBS says dropped frames indicate unstable network connectivity or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. If that symptom is present, use stable upload speed and YouTube’s limits to guide any bitrate reduction. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable. See the OBS dropped-frames guide and OBS network-connection guidance.
If only some viewers see the black screen
Ask whether the broadcaster’s preview is affected and whether other viewers can see the lesson. Have an affected viewer try another device or a different connection, then compare with someone watching elsewhere. If the problem follows one viewer, focus on that device or connection; if reports cluster on one shared network, investigate that network. Avoid changing the encoder unless the broadcaster-side evidence points there. YouTube’s troubleshooting guide describes how viewer reports can help distinguish these cases.

Choose between local playback and a cloud stream
An OBS playlist keeps the broadcast tied to the local machine, power, and internet connection. YouTube’s encoder guide also lists cloud tools for continuous streams made from prerecorded video, including Gyre. Compare playlist controls, recovery behavior, output quality, storage, stream limits, and current terms before switching; a cloud service changes how the stream runs and is not proof of a fix for a particular lesson transition. YouTube’s encoder software guide describes its available approaches. YouTube API documentation updated 2026-09-14 UTC uses a 24/7 feed as an example of one ongoing live stream alongside a separate simultaneous broadcast; that example does not establish that any particular playlist boundary is gapless. See the YouTube Live Broadcasts API documentation.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is an optional YouTube-only service for running uploaded lessons as a continuous stream. Its site says it loops playlists in the cloud and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream; those are StreamNeo’s own feature descriptions, not an independently verified diagnosis or guarantee that a lesson transition will be gapless. To use it: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Each slot streams uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; the first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free first day.

Common symptoms and the next check
| What you see | Likely area to inspect | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Black interval appears in OBS and local recording at lesson boundaries | Source, playlist, scene, or end-of-file behavior | Check Media Source Loop and end behavior, or VLC Video playlist, Loop Playlist, and Visibility Behaviour. |
| OBS looks healthy; Control Room shows black or a Health Indicator error | Encoder output, stream configuration, or ingest | Read the timestamped error and follow its matching format, bitrate, audio, or video guidance. |
| Dropped frames or intermittent connection symptoms | Outbound network or bitrate beyond stable capacity | Check connection stability and sustainable upload; consider wired networking and adjust bitrate only as evidence supports. |
| Only one viewer, or viewers on one shared network, report black video | Viewer device or network | Compare another device and connection; check whether viewers elsewhere are affected. |
These are diagnostic branches, not a claim that a particular cause has been reproduced. The exact OBS version, operating system, source settings, encoder configuration, and error message determine which branch applies.
Quick Recap
Prevent a repeat during continuous programming
- Test a full lesson transition and playlist restart before relying on the 24/7 scene.
- Keep a local recording when practical so you can compare what the encoder produced with what YouTube displayed.
- Use the Health Indicator’s timestamped message as evidence before changing bitrate or other encoder settings.
- Keep network troubleshooting focused on dropped frames or connection symptoms; a gap that reliably aligns with file boundaries calls for source and playlist checks first.
