Use OBS to play and send your lesson playlist; use YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to create or schedule the stream, check its preview, and launch it. For a playlist of local lesson files, add OBS’s VLC Video source (which requires VLC installed), then connect OBS to YouTube with the stream URL and key shown in Live Control Room.
What each tool does
OBS builds the program: it plays the lesson files and can combine them with sources such as a microphone, webcam, or screen capture. YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room configures and manages the YouTube event, including its stream key, preview, and launch. The playlist described here is a list of local media files played by OBS—not a YouTube playlist controlled from Live Control Room.
YouTube and OBS interfaces can change. The steps below follow the official YouTube and OBS workflow; check the labels in your current versions if they differ.
Build the lesson playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source relies on VLC being installed. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Create a scene. In OBS, create or select a scene for the lesson. Add a VLC Video source and select the local media files you want to play. The built-in Media Source is for a single file; VLC Video is the appropriate choice for a media playlist.
- Check playback behavior. Confirm the file order and decide whether the playlist should loop or shuffle. OBS documents loop enabled and shuffle disabled as the VLC source defaults; verify the controls rather than relying on defaults. Play the sequence through once before class to catch missing files, unexpected ordering, or playback problems.
- Add any supporting sources. Add a microphone, webcam, display, or capture device only if the lesson needs it. OBS source order affects which visual elements appear above others. OBS’s Sources Guide explains source behavior; its Quick Start Guide notes that microphone and desktop audio are captured by default and can be adjusted in Settings > Audio.
- Check the whole program. Confirm that lesson audio is audible and that any microphone or other source is included as intended. A test is especially useful when desktop audio and a microphone could overlap.
Create or schedule the YouTube event
Open YouTube Studio and choose Create > Go Live. You can start an encoder stream for an immediate event or schedule one ahead of time.

Start an immediate stream
Choose the live-stream setup for an encoder and configure the event details and privacy. This is the simpler route when you do not need an upcoming watch page for viewers to find in advance.
Schedule a stream
In Live Control Room, open Manage and choose Schedule Stream. Set the event’s metadata and privacy. A scheduled stream can be promoted in advance, and viewers may opt in to reminders. Scheduling is useful when you want an upcoming event page or need time to prepare and check the stream before teaching. YouTube’s instructions are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings.

Connect OBS to YouTube
- In Live Control Room, open the event’s stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open its streaming settings. Enter the stream URL and key, or use OBS’s YouTube service connection if available in your installation.
- If configuring the server manually, use the RTMPS URL displayed by Live Control Room if your encoder supports it. YouTube offers RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP; do not substitute a server address from memory.
- Treat the stream key as a credential. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” If the key is exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; editors and viewers cannot. Update OBS with the replacement key.
Preview, launch, and finish the lesson
- Start streaming from OBS. For a scheduled encoder event, wait for the incoming feed and preview to appear in Live Control Room.
- Check the preview and audio. Confirm that the expected lesson file is playing and that the intended sources are present.
- For a scheduled encoder stream, click Go live in Live Control Room once the preview appears. Starting the encoder feed and making the event live are separate actions in this workflow.
- When the lesson is over, stop sending content from OBS and use End Stream in Live Control Room as directed for the scheduled encoder workflow.
YouTube recommends testing beforehand, preparing the encoder in advance, and monitoring the stream. These are practical recommendations, not a guarantee that every issue will be caught. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and accessible from Studio’s Live tab; do not assume the same archive behavior for streams that run longer.
Choose the right latency setting
YouTube’s latency options trade delay against playback buffering. If students need to interact with you in real time, lower delay may matter more; for a mostly one-way lesson, a setting that favors smoother playback may be preferable. Choose in Live Control Room based on the interaction you need, and check YouTube’s current setting descriptions before the event.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The playlist source is unavailable or will not play: Confirm VLC is installed and that the selected files are accessible. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC; the built-in Media Source handles one file rather than a playlist.
- Lessons play in the wrong order or repeat unexpectedly: Review the playlist order and its loop and shuffle controls in OBS. Verify the behavior with a short playback test.
- YouTube does not receive the OBS feed: Check that OBS has the stream URL and current key from the correct Live Control Room event. If the key was reset, replace the old key in OBS. When entering a server manually, use the URL displayed by YouTube rather than an assumed address.
- The preview appears, but viewers cannot see the event: For a scheduled encoder stream, the preview is not the final launch. Use Go live in Live Control Room after checking it.
- The lesson audio is missing or doubled: Check the VLC source’s audio and OBS’s microphone and desktop-audio configuration under Settings > Audio. Confirm that the intended sources are active without capturing the same sound twice.
- A compromised key cannot be reset: Ask a channel owner or manager to reset it in Live Control Room; editor and viewer roles do not have that permission.
