How to Run a 24/7 Coding Tutorial Stream on YouTube From Prerecorded Lessons

Loop coding lessons into a YouTube Live broadcast with OBS, or use cloud playout. This guide covers setup, rights, monitoring, DVR limits and archives.

You can run prerecorded coding lessons as a continuous YouTube Live broadcast by looping a file or playlist in OBS Studio and sending the feed to YouTube with an encoder stream key. The local method works only while the computer, OBS, and internet connection stay running. For a cloud-based alternative, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos to YouTube without a computer running at home.

Before you start: check channel access and prepare lessons

  • Confirm livestream eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time livestream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so enable and test access before your planned launch. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and live-streaming tips.
  • Prepare the video files. Decide whether to repeat one lesson or cycle through an ordered playlist. Check that the files play correctly, their audio is audible, and transitions do not leave long unintended gaps.
  • Clear every element for this use. Make sure you have the necessary rights for the lesson footage, code demonstrations, music, graphics, slides, and embedded media. A video being yours or previously uploaded does not by itself establish that all its included material is cleared for a live broadcast.

Set up a local 24/7 stream with OBS

1. Add a single lesson or a playlist

  1. For one lesson, in OBS add a Media Source, select the video file, and enable Loop.
  2. For multiple lessons, add a VLC Video Source, add the lesson files in the intended order, and enable Loop Playlist. OBS’s VLC source requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install the 64-bit version of VLC.
  3. Check the OBS preview and audio meters. Confirm the correct scene is selected and that the video and sound continue through the end of a lesson and into the next one.

OBS’s source and playlist behavior is documented in the OBS media sources guide.

2. Create the YouTube encoder event and connect OBS

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create or schedule an encoder stream.
  2. Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key from the encoder setup, then enter them in OBS’s stream settings. Use the values shown for your event rather than a key from an unrelated stream.
  3. Treat the stream key as a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your channel. Do not publish it in code, a screen recording, or a public chat. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
  4. Start streaming from OBS. Wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room, review the preview, and make the event public when you are ready.

YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions cover stream URL and key. Labels and screens can change, so follow the values displayed in your Live Control Room.

3. Keep the local setup running

With OBS generating the feed, the computer must remain on and awake, OBS must remain open, and the internet connection must remain available. Prevent sleep or automatic shutdown, keep the computer supplied with power, and arrange someone to check the broadcast. YouTube recommends previewing the event and continuously monitoring audio and video; see its live-stream tips. A 24/7 local setup is not unattended merely because the playlist loops.

Choose local OBS or cloud playout

Approach Where the feed runs What is established What to verify or plan
Local OBS Your computer running OBS OBS can loop a Media Source or a VLC playlist; the playlist source requires VLC. YouTube requires the event’s stream URL and key. The computer, connection, and monitoring must support continuous operation. Cost and reliability comparisons are not established here.
StreamNeo (cloud) StreamNeo’s cloud, sending prerecorded video to YouTube Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; it loops uploaded videos without a home computer staying on. Every slot supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream and a first day free with no card. See StreamNeo for current details. It streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.
Gyre (cloud option) Cloud-based, as described by YouTube YouTube lists Gyre as an option for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos in its encoder setup guidance. The YouTube listing does not establish Gyre’s uptime guarantees, price, or comparative capabilities. Confirm current terms and playlist controls with the service.

Make the broadcast useful as a coding-learning channel

Help viewers find individual lessons

A continuous broadcast is not a dependable replacement for separate, navigable lesson uploads. YouTube says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for very long streams beyond 12 hours. Publish individual lessons separately when viewers need reliable chapter-level navigation, search, or a stable link to a specific topic.

Plan for the archive separately

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be treated as a guaranteed recording of the lessons. Keep your source files and make a separate local archive backup where you need one. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.

Rights, copyright checks, and monetization limits

YouTube’s livestream terms say: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Read the YouTube Terms of Service and clear all third-party material in your lessons for the relevant rights and territory.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A detected match can cause a placeholder to replace the stream, interrupt it, or terminate it. YouTube cautions that even licensed third-party material can be interrupted unless the rights holder adds the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s live copyright guidance and contact rights holders about allowlisting where applicable.

YouTube says creators in the YouTube Partner Program can monetize live streams, but that does not establish that a particular channel qualifies or that repetitive prerecorded programming will be approved under current monetization policies. Do not build a revenue plan around assumed eligibility or earnings.

Troubleshooting common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to do
YouTube does not show an incoming feed Livestream access is not enabled, OBS is not sending, or the server URL or stream key is incorrect. Check channel eligibility and enablement in YouTube Studio; allow up to 24 hours for first-time access. Confirm OBS is streaming and copy the URL and key from the correct event.
A playlist does not load or loop VLC may be missing or the playlist source may not be configured to repeat. Install VLC (matching OBS’s 64-bit version if applicable), confirm the media paths work, and enable Loop Playlist. For a single file, use Media Source and enable Loop.
Viewers see a copyright placeholder or the stream is interrupted YouTube detected third-party content, or a rights holder has not allowlisted the channel despite a license. Review the specific match, verify rights for all audio and visual elements, and contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting. Do not assume a license alone prevents live interruption.
The broadcast ends or goes offline unexpectedly In a local workflow, the computer, OBS, power, or internet connection may have stopped; platform-side interruptions are also possible. Check the computer and network, reconnect using the event’s current stream details, and monitor the preview. For cloud playout, check the service’s status and recovery behavior rather than assuming a particular uptime guarantee.
Past lessons cannot be rewound or recovered from the archive Very long streams can have limited DVR rewind, and streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived. Keep source files and separate backups; publish individual lesson uploads for dependable access to specific topics.
