You can loop a prepared lecture file to YouTube Live from Debian with FFmpeg, but keeping FFmpeg running is only half the job: YouTube’s live event and its archive have separate limits. The example below assumes a Debian host with a working FFmpeg build, a lecture file containing video and audio, and a YouTube encoder stream already created. It transcodes to a YouTube-recommended 1080p30 H.264 profile; check your installed encoders and uplink before using it.
1. Confirm your channel can go live and create an encoder stream
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using an encoder. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the key as a secret: YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not publish it, commit it to a script repository, or share it in a screenshot. YouTube’s eligibility and encoder setup guidance is in its Help pages, “YouTube live streaming tips” and “Manage live stream settings.”
Check the destination before sending video
- Use the server URL and key for the same event. A key from another event can send the feed somewhere unexpected or fail to connect.
- YouTube recommends RTMPS. Use the server URL supplied in Live Control Room rather than guessing or constructing an ingest address.
- Keep the key private. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before the next broadcast.
2. Check the Debian FFmpeg build and the lecture file
Debian release, package version and build options differ. Before relying on an example, inspect the FFmpeg installed on the actual host; a binary may not include the encoder or muxer you need.

If the file has no audio, more than one video or audio stream, or an unusual format, change the mapping and encoding choices rather than assuming the command fits it. FFmpeg’s installed documentation and the FFmpeg documentation for its RTMP protocol, FLV output and FIFO muxer describe the available options; check them against your build.
Choose stream-copy or re-encoding
- Stream-copy avoids video-encoding CPU load and does not alter the encoded video, but it is suitable only when the source already has compatible codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe spacing. It cannot repair a profile YouTube rejects or convert a keyframe interval that is too long.
- Re-encoding lets you set an ingest profile explicitly, at the cost of CPU use and another lossy encode. Use it when the source does not already meet the target settings, and test that the Debian host can sustain encoding continuously.
The command here re-encodes to H.264 and AAC. If your source already meets YouTube’s requirements and you choose stream-copy, validate the complete file and the resulting Live Control Room health indicators first; there is no one copy command that is safe for every media file.
3. Set a sustainable YouTube ingest profile
YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. Its published H.264 recommendations are 6 Mbps for 720p30 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30; those are platform recommendations, not proof that a particular Debian host or internet connection can maintain them. The same stated rates apply to H.265/AV1 at those resolutions and frame rates. See YouTube Help, “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions” and “RTMPS guidance.”

These are YouTube’s operational recommendations, not a promise of a particular picture quality or a minimum internet speed. Test from the host and leave headroom above the total stream bitrate for network variation and other traffic. A high target bitrate is not useful if the uplink cannot sustain it.

For the example, use a 1080p30 H.264/AAC output. Replace the filename and enter the exact server URL and key from Live Control Room. This command assumes the server URL has no trailing slash; keep the key private. The key is read without echoing it to the terminal, although environment variables may still be visible to privileged users and tools on the host.

-f flv "$DEST"-stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely, and -re reads it at its native rate rather than sending the file as fast as storage can be read. At 30 fps, -g 60 sets a 60-frame, two-second GOP; fixed-rate output and disabled scene-cut keyframes make the interval predictable. The video bitrate and buffer target the cited 1080p30 recommendation. The command does not resize the input, so use a suitable 1080p source or add an intentional scale filter after testing; do not assume that setting -r 30 alone changes its resolution. If the video is 720p30 instead, select the 6 Mbps recommendation and adjust the GOP to match the actual output frame rate.

For a file whose first audio stream is absent, -map 0:a:0 will fail. For unusual frame rates, interlaced sources, multiple tracks or other codecs, inspect the file and tailor the command rather than removing errors blindly. If the installed FFmpeg does not list libx264, choose an encoder that is present and supported by YouTube, or install an appropriate build for the Debian release.
Optional: ask FFmpeg to recover from temporary output errors
FFmpeg documents a FIFO muxer configuration that can retry after certain temporary network errors. To try it, replace the command’s final output line with:

Recovery can help with temporary output failures, but it cannot correct a bad key, incompatible media, a permanently lost network, a failed host or a YouTube-side restriction. A queue can also delay the feed while packets wait; watch the preview and health information rather than assuming a retry means the stream is current.

5. Test, monitor and keep a separate recording
Before leaving a 24/7 feed unattended, run a representative test with both speech and motion. In Live Control Room, check the preview and stream-health messages, then confirm the expected quality and sound. YouTube’s encoder guidance also recommends testing and monitoring the stream. Confirm that a local archive or recording is actually growing; an encoder process that has not exited is not by itself proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed or saving an archive.
- Keep a separately controlled local recording if the lecture must be preserved. A YouTube archive is convenient, but it is not the only copy you should rely on.
- Watch FFmpeg’s output for connection, encoding and muxing errors. A process manager can restart a process after it exits, but repeated restarts will not fix bad credentials, invalid media or an unavailable uplink.
- Monitor the Debian host and connection over time. Confirm there is enough storage for local recording and that the host will remain powered and connected.
6. Plan YouTube events around the 12-hour archive warning
A continuous encoder feed and a durable YouTube archive are different things. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, recommends a local archive backup, and warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” The guidance is cautious (“may”), not a guarantee that every shorter stream will be saved. For an archive you need to retain, plan event end points and rotation before the 12-hour threshold, verify each resulting archive in YouTube Studio, and keep the separate local recording. Restarting FFmpeg alone does not establish that YouTube has created a new event or archive.
7. Check rights and content before looping a lecture
Use lecture recordings and music you have permission to stream, and check YouTube’s current live-stream requirements and channel restrictions before broadcasting. A file being available online does not by itself establish that you can rebroadcast it. A repeated prepared feed also should not be treated as a substitute for reviewing YouTube’s current rules on copyright and monetization; eligibility and policy outcomes depend on the channel and content, and the encoder settings cannot guarantee them.
