You can run recorded calculus lessons as a continuous YouTube live stream by looping original lesson videos through an encoder such as OBS, or by using a cloud service that plays uploaded videos. For a do-it-yourself setup, prepare a navigable lesson library, connect OBS to YouTube Live with your stream key, configure the loop, and test it before going public. Keep separate uploads of individual lessons: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, so a longer continuous broadcast is not a dependable archive.
Plan the lessons as a course, not just a loop
Build a clear sequence
Arrange lessons in a learning order, for example limits and continuity, derivatives, applications of derivatives, integrals, and series. Give every recording a clear topic and level, note prerequisites, and point learners to the next lesson. A playlist of discrete lessons is easier to update and navigate than one very long file.
Help people who join midstream understand what they are watching. Add an opening card or persistent label with the lesson title and course sequence, and consider a brief “recorded lesson loop” notice. Include worked examples, deliberate pauses for practice, and recaps; vary the explanations and examples rather than repeating nearly identical slides.
Use material you can broadcast
Record your own lessons or obtain the rights to broadcast the material. Check rights for music, images, textbook excerpts, graphics, and any other material in the videos. Originality matters separately from ownership: YouTube’s channel monetization policy says content should be original and authentic rather than mass-produced, generic, or repetitive, and its review may consider the channel’s theme, newest and most-viewed videos, metadata, and About section. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Check YouTube Live eligibility before production day
Verify the channel and enable live streaming in advance. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours. The channel also needs to have no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. Current YouTube setup guidance states a limit of 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key; these are concurrency limits, not a promise of audience reach. See YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance.
- Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule the live stream and choose its visibility and other stream details.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. Treat the key like a password; do not publish or share it.
- Enter those connection details in OBS, then wait for the preview in YouTube Studio.
- Check the preview, stream details, and audio before making the broadcast public.
YouTube’s encoder instructions explain the connection process. Keep the stream key private, and use the appropriate key for the scheduled broadcast.

Configure OBS to play one lesson or a lesson playlist
Loop a single video
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene.
- Select the local lesson video file.
- Enable the source’s Loop setting, then preview it to confirm the video restarts as expected.
Loop a sequence of lessons
- Arrange the lesson files in the intended order and confirm that each is playable on the streaming computer.
- Add a VLC Video Source and create a playlist from the lesson files.
- Enable Loop Playlist, then preview the order, transitions, audio levels, and restart behavior.
OBS documents both options in its Media Sources guide. A scene can combine the lesson video with a course label or other original visual context. Check that equations remain legible at the selected output layout, including on a phone. YouTube offers horizontal and vertical live experiences; preview the composition before using a portrait crop, which can cut off board work.
Test the actual streaming computer
Run a private or unlisted test before the public launch. Check picture, sound, lesson order, restart behavior, and whether the computer can sustain the chosen scene and output settings. OBS warns that meeting basic system requirements does not guarantee streaming performance: CPU load varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Consult the OBS system requirements and test your actual setup rather than assuming a particular machine will cope.

Choose local OBS or a cloud playback host
Local playback with OBS
OBS gives you direct control over scenes and playlists, but the computer, internet connection, and power supply must remain available for the stream to continue. Plan how you will restart after a crash or outage, keep backup copies of lesson files, and decide who will monitor YouTube warnings and chat. A local setup does not guarantee uninterrupted operation.
Cloud playback
YouTube’s encoder documentation names Gyre as an example of a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded streaming, but that mention alone does not establish its pricing, service guarantees, archive behavior, or terms. Check a service’s own current terms before choosing it.

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can cause a placeholder to replace the picture, interrupt the broadcast, or lead to termination if third-party material persists. Even if you have a license, YouTube says the channel may need to be allowlisted by the rights holder in Content ID for a live broadcast. Keep permission records and confirm any allowlisting requirement with the rights holder. Read YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

For monetization, a continuous live presentation does not exempt prerecorded material from YouTube’s originality and authenticity expectations. Make the channel’s educational purpose clear, keep metadata accurate, and provide meaningful instructional variation. A policy-compliant format does not by itself guarantee monetization approval.
Keep individual lesson archives separately
YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on a single broadcast longer than that to leave a complete replay. Keep clean local masters and upload the lessons individually with useful titles, descriptions, chapters, and playlists.
YouTube says public archived livestreams can contribute qualified watch hours, while livestreams that are not archived do not. This does not guarantee YouTube Partner Program eligibility: the broader program rules and channel review still apply. See the qualified watch-hours guidance.
Quick Recap
Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube shows no preview: Check that the correct server URL and stream key are entered in OBS, that the stream is started in the encoder, and that the key has not been exposed or replaced.
- Live streaming is unavailable: Verify the channel and enable live streaming ahead of time. First activation may take up to 24 hours, and a restriction within the previous 90 days can prevent streaming.
- The lesson stops or does not restart: Confirm that the file is accessible and playable, then check Loop for a Media Source or Loop Playlist for a VLC playlist source. Test a complete playback cycle before launch.
- The video stutters or the stream drops: Test the actual OBS scene and settings on the streaming computer. Encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, network, and power can all affect local operation; reduce workload or address the connection problem, then run another test.
- The stream is interrupted or replaced by a placeholder: Check YouTube Studio for a copyright warning. Remove the matched material or resolve rights with the rights holder; for licensed content, ask whether Content ID allowlisting is required.
- The recording is incomplete: Retain the original files and publish standalone lesson uploads. A continuous stream longer than 12 hours should not be treated as a reliable complete archive.
