Then test the reboot and verify the feed in both the encoder and YouTube Live Control Room: a task that opens an app does not prove that YouTube is receiving a live stream.
What Windows and YouTube each need to do
This setup has two separate parts. Windows must launch the streaming application after a reboot, and the application must reconnect to YouTube with a valid stream URL and key. YouTube’s auto-start setting controls whether an encoder can start or stop a broadcast; it does not configure Windows to launch the encoder after an update.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions say, “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the workflow.
Set up the encoder’s YouTube connection

In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select an encoder stream.

Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into the streaming application’s stream settings. YouTube may let you reuse saved stream settings, including a previously used key.

Keep the key private. YouTube describes it as similar to the stream’s password and address. If you reset the key, replace the old key in the encoder as well. See Manage live stream settings and Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.

In the stream’s settings, decide whether to enable Auto-start & auto-stop. This controls starting or stopping the broadcast from the encoder; it is separate from the Windows startup task.

Choose when Windows should launch the encoder
Task Scheduler offers system-start and user-logon triggers. Use a system-start trigger only if the application and its stream configuration work in the task’s run context. If the encoder needs the signed-in user’s desktop, choose a logon trigger instead; streaming then waits until that user signs in. Microsoft documents these as separate trigger types in its Task Scheduler trigger reference.

Create a scheduled task

Open Windows Task Scheduler and choose Create Task. Give the task a recognizable name, such as “Start YouTube study stream.”

On the Triggers tab, choose New, then select the system-start or user-logon trigger that matches the run context you need.

On the Actions tab, choose New → Start a program. Browse to the encoder application’s executable and select it. If the application requires command-line arguments or a working directory, use the values supported by that application; do not guess them.

Review the task’s security and conditions settings so they match the intended account and startup behavior. In particular, do not rely on a system-start task to provide an interactive desktop unless your application setup supports that context.

Save the task and use Task Scheduler’s Run action to check that it opens the expected application under the configured account.

Microsoft’s schtasks create reference uses /sc onstart for a task scheduled at system startup. The graphical Task Scheduler interface provides trigger choices as well.
Configure retries for a failed task
In the task’s settings, you can configure a restart interval and retry count if the task fails. Microsoft documents these as RestartOnFailure settings. Retries can help relaunch a failed application task, but they do not check whether the encoder is sending or whether YouTube accepted the feed. See Microsoft’s RestartOnFailure settings reference.

After restart, check Task Scheduler’s task history or status to confirm the task ran, then verify that the encoder opened with the intended scene and study-stream source.

Confirm the encoder is outputting. In YouTube Live Control Room, inspect the preview and stream health, then check the public watch page to confirm what viewers can see. YouTube’s live streaming tips for computers recommend checking the preview, stream health, and availability.

If YouTube does not accept the incoming feed, check the stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder if the key is wrong or has been reset. Follow YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting steps; never share the key publicly.
Why an automatic restart can still fail
Task Scheduler only addresses application launch and, if configured, retries for a failed task. End-to-end recovery still depends on the PC having power and network access, Windows completing startup, the encoder launching with the right credentials and source, and YouTube accepting the feed. There is no guarantee that a scheduled task alone will restore a live broadcast after every update or failure.
- The encoder does not open: Check that the task points to the correct executable, that its trigger ran, and that its account and run context suit the application.
- The encoder opens but is not streaming: Check the encoder’s output state and the YouTube auto-start setting. That setting concerns starting or stopping a broadcast from the encoder; it does not launch the application.
- YouTube does not receive the feed: Check the stream URL and key in both places, and replace the encoder’s key if it was reset.
- The preview is missing or unhealthy: Confirm that the intended source or scene is available and inspect YouTube’s preview and stream-health information before assuming the public stream is working.
- The PC is waiting at sign-in: If the encoder needs an interactive desktop, use a user-logon trigger and account for the time before that user signs in.
