Yes. A Windows mini PC can run a YouTube study stream around the clock with OBS Studio, provided the computer, internet connection, power and cooling can sustain the workload—and you plan for outages and YouTube’s archive limit. The basic process is to create a YouTube live stream, connect OBS with its stream URL and key, build and test a scene, then configure and test how the setup behaves after a restart or connection drop.
Plan the stream before setting up the mini PC
Choose what viewers will see and hear before tuning OBS. A study stream might use a still image with licensed music, a looped visual with ambient sound, a captured desktop, or a camera-led study-with-me scene. These options place different demands on the computer and connection: a mostly static scene is generally less demanding than complex motion, but OBS does not certify a particular mini PC for a given scene.
- Decide the format: still or looping visual, desktop capture, camera, or a combination.
- Choose a target resolution and frame rate: use a setting your upload connection can sustain continuously, not just at its best moment.
- Plan moderation: decide who will watch chat and handle viewer reports while the stream runs.
- Decide whether you need a replay: YouTube’s automatic archive rule affects how long a single live event should run.
- Check media rights: use audio and visual material you own or have explicit permission to stream. “Study music,” loops and background footage are not automatically copyright-safe; check current YouTube policies and your license terms.
Create the YouTube live stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that event. If this is the first time enabling live streaming on the channel, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Keep the stream key private. It functions as a credential: do not show it in screenshots, public posts or recordings. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before relying on the stream again.
Install OBS and build a simple study scene
OBS Studio is the encoder that sends the mini PC’s video and audio to YouTube. Its Windows requirements include Windows 10 or 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU, but OBS cautions that meeting compatibility requirements does not guarantee that a system can stream or record successfully. Workload depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. See the OBS system requirements and OBS Quick Start Guide.
- Install OBS, then run its Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point for settings. Do not treat the suggested configuration as proof that the mini PC can sustain a 24/7 stream.
- Create a scene and add the relevant source: for example, an image, video source, text, display capture or camera. For a loop, confirm in the installed OBS version that the source repeats and restarts as intended.
- Add audio and watch the OBS audio meters while representative sound plays. Check that the audio is audible and not clipping, and that the intended source is active.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube if available, and enter the stream URL and key from the Live Control Room. OBS versions and account-connection options can differ; the key-and-server workflow is the direct encoder method.
- Run a private or otherwise controlled test before a public broadcast, and verify both the OBS preview and the YouTube Live Control Room. OBS recommends testing for a few minutes before going live.
Choose settings your upload can sustain
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingest, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), and frame rates up to 60 fps. It lists H.264, HEVC and AV1 as supported video codecs; AAC or MP3 audio is recommended. Exact codec availability depends on your encoder and configuration. Consult YouTube’s current live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

For H.264, YouTube’s guidance lists these video bitrate recommendations. They are platform ingest recommendations, not guarantees that a connection with the same nominal upload speed will remain stable all day and night.

Run a speed test, then test the actual stream with the same scene, sound and motion you expect to use. Leave upload headroom for normal variation and other household traffic; a speed test is a snapshot, not an around-the-clock stability test. If OBS reports dropped frames or YouTube flags stream health, lower the bitrate or output demands and test again. Check the encoder’s own load as well: a stable network does not prevent a mini PC from being overloaded.

Check whether the mini PC can run continuously
No particular mini PC model or minimum processor or memory configuration is established for this workload. OBS itself notes that a compatible system may still be incapable of streaming. Use the wizard as a starting point, then test the actual scene for an extended period and watch encoder load, dropped frames, temperatures and YouTube stream health.
When choosing a machine, assess hardware encoder support, sustained cooling and fan noise, wired Ethernet availability, memory and storage headroom, Windows support, power draw and serviceability against your real scene. These are selection considerations, not a tested minimum specification. A still image with audio may be a lighter workload than a camera or animated scene, but that does not establish that any specific mini PC will be reliable indefinitely.

Plan for restarts, network drops and power interruptions
OBS provides a --startstreaming launch parameter. On Windows, you can add launch parameters to an OBS shortcut as described in the OBS Launch Parameters documentation. This can start streaming when OBS opens; it does not by itself guarantee that the whole unattended setup will recover correctly.

- Restart: reboot Windows and confirm the intended account and OBS session open as expected.
- Connection loss: interrupt the network briefly, restore it and verify whether OBS reconnects and the correct YouTube event resumes.
- Power loss: test what happens when power is restored. Windows startup behavior and any BIOS option for powering on after an outage vary by device; check the mini PC’s own documentation rather than assuming a setting exists.
- Media source: verify that audio and video resume at the intended point after OBS or the computer restarts.
- Updates and login: confirm that Windows update or sign-in behavior will not leave the machine waiting at a screen instead of streaming. Do not disable security updates as a blanket fix.
A UPS can bridge some brief outages, but the required capacity and runtime depend on the combined load of the mini PC and network equipment. It is not a substitute for testing recovery or for a longer-term power plan.

YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Do not assume one uninterrupted 24-hour live event will be saved as one complete replay. If a complete replay matters, consider ending and restarting the event before the 12-hour threshold, and verify the current YouTube behavior for your channel and stream workflow.

You can also record locally while streaming in OBS, but recording uses storage and can add encoder load depending on the settings. OBS recommends MKV where an ungraceful stop could otherwise corrupt a whole recording. Its Standard Recording Output Guide explains that recording with settings other than “Same as stream” uses additional computer resources. See also the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube does not receive the stream: check that the selected event, stream URL and key match, and that the key has not been exposed or replaced. Confirm the channel has completed first-time live enablement.
- Stream health is poor or frames are dropping: compare the output bitrate with your sustained upload capacity, reduce resolution, frame rate or bitrate, and test again with other household traffic in mind.
- OBS reports encoder overload: reduce output demands or scene complexity, then repeat an extended test. Compatibility with OBS alone does not show that the mini PC can encode your chosen workload.
- Audio or video is missing after a restart: inspect the scene’s source selection and loop behavior in OBS, then test a full restart rather than only stopping and starting the stream.
- The stream does not resume unattended: confirm OBS opens, Windows is ready, the network is available and the correct event remains active. The launch parameter only addresses starting OBS streaming when OBS launches; it is not a complete recovery system.
- The full day is not available as a replay: a single 24-hour event should not be assumed to produce a complete automatic archive. Use shorter events or a local recording if replay preservation is important.
