How to Loop a Podcast Playlist on YouTube Live Without Restarting the Stream

Use OBS Media Source or VLC Video Source to repeat podcast media while OBS keeps sending a continuous broadcast to YouTube Live.

To loop a podcast playlist on YouTube Live without restarting the broadcast, keep OBS Studio’s encoder stream running and loop the media inside OBS. Use VLC Video Source with Loop Playlist enabled for multiple files, or a single Media Source with Loop enabled. YouTube receives the continuous program from OBS; it does not create this broadcast loop from a viewer’s YouTube playlist.

Choose the right OBS source

What you want to repeat OBS source Loop control Requirement
One local audio or video file Media Source Loop Use the Media Source’s Loop option.
Several local files in sequence VLC Video Source Loop Playlist VLC must be installed, and its architecture must match OBS. The OBS documentation specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

OBS’s Media Sources documentation lists common supported video formats such as MP4 and MOV, and audio formats such as MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. For a playlist that should repeat in a predictable order, leave Shuffle off. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.

Set up and test the playlist before going live

  1. Keep the files available locally. Gather the podcast audio or video files you plan to play and check that they open correctly. Build and test the sequence before relying on it during a live broadcast.
  2. Add the appropriate source in OBS. For one file, add a Media Source, select the file, and enable Loop. For multiple files, add a VLC Video Source, add the files to its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist.
  3. Install VLC if the VLC source is unavailable. Install a VLC version whose architecture matches OBS, then reopen OBS if needed. The VLC Video Source depends on VLC.
  4. Check playback behavior when the source is hidden. Review the source’s Visibility Behaviour setting. Depending on that choice, a source can stop or restart, pause or resume, or continue playing while hidden. Choose the behavior that matches whether the playlist should keep advancing when its scene is not visible.
  5. Connect OBS to YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream, then copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Start streaming from OBS and check for its preview in Live Control Room. Start or confirm the YouTube event according to the workflow you selected. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and live stream settings cover the platform-side steps.
  6. Verify the outgoing program. Confirm the expected playlist item is visible or audible in the YouTube preview and that stream health is acceptable. YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the event, and monitoring the preview and stream health. Review YouTube’s live streaming tips.
  7. Leave OBS sending the feed. When one item ends, the OBS source should advance or repeat while the encoder keeps sending the program. Do not stop OBS just to make the playlist loop.

Why the stream can continue while the playlist repeats

OBS’s media source supplies the program; OBS’s encoder sends that program to YouTube. The playlist loop happens inside the outgoing program, so the encoder does not need to disconnect and reconnect when the media reaches its end. For several files, OBS’s Loop Playlist option restarts the source after it runs out of media. For one file, the Media Source’s separate Loop option replays that file. OBS documents both source behaviors.

YouTube’s player controls are different: a viewer’s playback settings do not insert a playlist into an encoder broadcast that is already running. Likewise, the “playlist” in YouTube’s HLS setup documentation refers to a rolling transport playlist of stream segments, not your podcast episodes. HLS ingestion has its own segment requirements; most people using the OBS playlist method do not need to change HLS settings just to repeat podcast media. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

Plan the live settings around your output

There is no single bitrate or resolution that fits every stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance varies by codec and output format. Use its current recommendations for your chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, and connection, rather than treating one bitrate as universal. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Test with conditions similar to the real broadcast and inspect both picture and sound in the preview. For a podcast, specifically confirm that speech is audible, the playlist advances as intended, and any video or still-image presentation is present in the outgoing scene.

Troubleshoot common loop and stream problems

  • VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC, check that its architecture matches OBS, and reopen OBS. VLC is a prerequisite for this source.
  • A single file stops at the end: Confirm that it is a Media Source and that its Loop option is enabled. This is not the same control as Loop Playlist.
  • The playlist stops after the last item: Confirm the intended files are listed in the VLC Video Source and enable Loop Playlist.
  • Playback pauses or restarts after a scene change: Review the source’s Visibility Behaviour and select the option that matches whether it should continue while hidden.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that OBS has the current stream URL and key from Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance directs third-party encoder users to copy the stream key from Live Control Room and paste it into their encoder. Troubleshoot a YouTube live stream.
  • Picture, sound, or connection is unreliable: Test before the event, inspect the preview, monitor stream health, and follow YouTube’s settings guidance for your selected output. Bitrate needs depend on the codec and format.

End the broadcast only when you mean to end it

Looping the OBS source does not end the YouTube event. When you are ready to stop broadcasting, stop sending content from the encoder and end the stream in YouTube according to the selected workflow. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not treat that behavior as a substitute for deliberately ending the event. See YouTube’s encoder workflow.
