What’s actually slowing this PC down?

First find out where the picture disappears: check OBS’s preview and make a short local recording. If either is black, troubleshoot the OBS scene, video source, capture target, or operating-system permissions. If both look right but the YouTube stream is black, check YouTube Live Control Room and the stream’s connection instead. Changing bitrate is not a universal fix for a blank picture.
Start by locating the failure
Before changing settings, check the active OBS scene and preview. Confirm the intended video source is there, enabled, visible, and aimed at the right target. If you are unsure whether the problem is in OBS or after it, record a short local test and play it back.
| What you see | Where to investigate first |
|---|---|
| The OBS preview and local recording are black | The scene, source visibility, capture target, source type, or operating-system permission. |
| The OBS preview looks right, but the local recording is black | Check the recording output and confirm that the recording captured the intended scene and source. |
| The preview and local recording look right, but YouTube is black | Check the Live Control Room preview and messages, encoder output, and outbound connection. |
| The picture appears but is choppy or unstable | Investigate OBS rendering load and network health separately; this is not the same symptom as a static blank source. |
Check the scene, source, and capture target
Confirm the expected source is visible
In the active scene, make sure the intended camera, capture device, display, window, or application source is present and enabled. Check the source’s visibility in the Sources list and verify that it has not been covered by another source or placed outside the visible canvas. Confirm that the selected source points to the device or target you actually want to show.
Use a source that matches what you are capturing
For an entire monitor, use Display Capture and check that it is targeting the correct display. For one application or window, select the appropriate window or application capture source. A camera or capture device needs its own camera or video-capture source; a display-capture fix will not correct a camera source that is blank.

On macOS 13 and later, OBS documents legacy Display Capture as deprecated and directs users to the macOS Screen Capture source. That source can capture a display, a single window, or visible windows for an application. Choose the capture method for your macOS version and intended target rather than assuming every platform uses the same source.
Fix a black screen on macOS
macOS may block screen or camera capture until OBS has permission. In OBS Studio, open the OBS Studio menu and choose Review App Permissions. Enable Screen Recording for desktop, window, and application capture. For a webcam or capture card, check the separate Camera permission; for microphone input, check Microphone.
If the source stays blank after you change a permission, verify that the source and target are correct and follow any restart or retest prompt shown by your macOS version. Permission behavior and recovery prompts can vary by operating-system version, so there is not one restart sequence that applies to every Mac.

If the source is Game Capture
Game Capture has game-specific failure modes. These checks apply when the black source is capturing a game—not as a default fix for a podcast webcam or display source.
- Some games require OBS to run as administrator.
- Overlays, FPS counters, and other conflicting software can interfere with capture; close or disable likely conflicts to test.
- For some games, use windowed or borderless mode and try Window Capture instead.
- On a laptop or all-in-one with multiple GPUs, check that OBS and the game are using the high-performance GPU.
Use the current OBS guidance for the particular game; not every workaround applies to every title.
If OBS and the local recording look right, check YouTube
When the picture is present in OBS and in the local file, move to the outbound stream path rather than rebuilding the scene immediately.

- Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect its preview and any encoder or stream messages.
- Check the encoder’s output to confirm OBS is sending the intended scene.
- Inspect the local archive or recording again as a comparison point.
- If OBS output appears healthy but YouTube still receives no picture, test the outbound internet connection and review the connection information in Live Control Room.
YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting treats source or encoder problems and outbound connection problems as separate branches. A bitrate change alone is not an established cure for a black picture.
Separate a blank source from performance overload
OBS uses GPU resources to compose and render scenes. If the stream is choppy, lagging, or otherwise overloaded, free system resources, simplify demanding sources, or reduce output resolution or frame rate. These steps can reduce rendering load; they should not be the first response to a static black camera or display source that is otherwise not being captured.

Preflight the podcast before going public
Run a private or unlisted test stream before the scheduled show. Check the OBS preview, make sure the YouTube Live Control Room preview shows the picture, then confirm the watch page displays video and monitor audio and video quality. A local preview alone does not prove that YouTube is receiving the image.
- Confirm the active scene and intended source before starting.
- Check the video at both the encoder and YouTube’s preview.
- Use a test stream to catch capture or connection problems before the public podcast begins.
YouTube’s computer-streaming guidance says: “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” That is a reason to diagnose the existing setup before buying gear, not a guarantee that every device or connection is adequate.

| Symptom | Likely branch | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS preview is black for a monitor | Display capture target or macOS permission | Confirm the selected display and capture source; on macOS 13 or later, use macOS Screen Capture and check Screen Recording permission. |
| OBS camera source is black | Camera source or camera permission | Confirm the intended camera or capture device is selected and enabled; on macOS, check Camera permission. |
| Only a game is black | Game Capture compatibility or conflict | Check administrator access, conflicting overlays, game display mode, and GPU selection on multi-GPU systems. |
| OBS and local file are fine; YouTube is black | Encoder output or outbound stream path | Review Live Control Room, encoder output, local archive, and outbound connection. |
| Picture is visible but output is choppy | Rendering load or connection quality | Assess OBS resource load and network separately; simplify sources or reduce output resolution or frame rate if OBS is overloaded. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a podcast episode that has already been recorded, StreamNeo can keep an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube without leaving a computer running at home. It does not stream a live camera feed, so it is not a replacement for OBS when you are recording or broadcasting a live conversation.

Do you need new hardware?
Not as a general first step. The documented troubleshooting paths are to verify the source and capture target, check operating-system permissions, address game-specific capture conflicts where relevant, and distinguish local capture from YouTube delivery. Consider replacing a cable, camera, or capture device only if your own diagnosis points to that component; a black screen by itself does not establish that a purchase is needed.
