YouTube requires video as well as audio, so an audio-only feed is not enough; use a still image or other suitable visual with the podcast audio. The settings below follow YouTube Help’s guidance accessed October 3, 2026. The example FFmpeg command is an implementation pattern, not a command verified against your particular VPS, FFmpeg build, or media files.
What you need before starting
- A Linux VPS with FFmpeg installed and enough reliable outbound bandwidth for your chosen video bitrate plus audio and network overhead. No particular VPS size is established for this workflow; CPU requirements depend on whether FFmpeg is encoding video or simply copying a pre-encoded file.
- A podcast audio file and a visual to accompany it, such as a static image or a prepared video. YouTube’s LiveStreams API identifies a missing video stream as a configuration issue, so sending audio alone will not satisfy this setup.
- A YouTube channel with access to Live Control Room, and the ingest URL and stream key for the selected stream.
- Permission to use every audio and visual element in the broadcast. YouTube’s encoder guidance does not grant rights to music, recordings, artwork, or other material; confirm the relevant rights and YouTube rules before going live.
Create a YouTube live stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create or select the stream or event you intend to use.
- Copy the current server/ingest URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the exact endpoint YouTube provides rather than copying one from an old tutorial: the endpoint and application path are stream-specific or may change.
- Keep the key secret. Do not put it in a public script, terminal screenshot, shared log, or source repository. Store it in a file readable only by the account that runs the stream, or inject it through a protected secret mechanism.
- Check whether your encoder expects the ingest URL and key in separate fields or as one combined value. YouTube’s API documents an ingestion URL and stream name; some encoders require them separately, while others use a combined form such as
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME.
YouTube describes an ingestion stream as the incoming video feed, which can be associated with one or more broadcasts. That distinction matters if you reuse stream configuration: confirm in Live Control Room that the correct broadcast is associated with the feed you are sending.
Choose video, audio, and network settings
YouTube’s generic encoder recommendations do not prescribe Kannada-specific settings. Choose settings based on the visual, source media, encoder support, and reliable VPS upload capacity. These are YouTube Help recommendations accessed October 3, 2026—not local test results.

For context, YouTube’s listed AV1/H.265 figures for 1080p at 30 fps are a 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended. Check YouTube’s current encoder-settings table before a production broadcast because its recommendations can change. Select a rate your VPS can maintain with headroom; a nominal VPS port speed is not proof of sustained upload capacity.

Prepare media for the VPS
For a prerecorded episode, prepare a video file that already contains the intended visual and podcast audio, or combine the audio with a still image in your workflow. A single prepared video is the simplest input for an encoder. Check its duration, audio level, aspect ratio, and playback before scheduling the broadcast. If the stream is meant to continue beyond one episode, decide how playback should behave at the end; looping and playlist behavior depend on your media workflow and FFmpeg invocation.
For a static visual plus a separate audio file, the following command illustrates one possible FFmpeg pattern. It assumes an image named cover.jpg and audio named episode.mp3 in the working directory, and an FFmpeg build with the required input and encoding support. It loops the image and audio input, scales the image to 1280×720, encodes H.264 at 30 fps with a 2-second GOP, encodes stereo AAC audio, and sends the result over RTMPS:

Replace the endpoint and key with the exact values from Live Control Room, and verify your FFmpeg build, input formats, and output against YouTube’s current stream-health feedback. The 8 Mbps video rate shown corresponds to YouTube’s recommended H.264 rate for 720p at 30 fps; change it if you choose another output. Do not leave a real key embedded in a file with broad read permissions or in shell history. For production, pass secrets through a protected configuration method appropriate to your shell and service manager.
Run the encoder and keep it supervised
Start with a manual rehearsal in a maintenance window. Run FFmpeg in the foreground first so you can see startup errors and confirm that YouTube receives both audio and video. Then arrange process supervision using the service manager available on your Linux distribution, such as a systemd unit where systemd is used. Exact unit syntax, user and group names, file paths, restart policy, and environment-file permissions vary by operating system and VPS image; validate them on the machine rather than pasting a generic unit blindly.

- Run FFmpeg as a dedicated, unprivileged service account where practical, with read access to the media and no unnecessary access to the rest of the server.
- Keep credentials outside the command line where feasible, and restrict permissions on any environment or configuration file containing a stream key.
- Configure the service to restart after an unexpected process exit, but avoid an aggressive restart loop that hides persistent errors. Inspect service status and logs after a failure.
- Check the VPS provider’s outbound firewall or network policy if the process cannot connect. RTMPS uses port 443 according to Google’s connection guide; do not assume an inbound firewall change is necessary for an outbound stream.
- After rebooting the VPS during a planned rehearsal, confirm that the service starts as expected and reconnects to the intended YouTube stream.
Connect over RTMPS
Google recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Its connection guidance requires the RTMPS protocol, a valid YouTube endpoint and application path, a connection to port 443, and the server hostname for authentication through SNI during the TLS handshake. Use the exact endpoint displayed in Live Control Room or returned by YouTube’s API. A mismatch between the hostname, endpoint, protocol, or path can prevent the connection even if the stream key is correct.
Rehearse and monitor the broadcast
- Before the scheduled broadcast, test with representative audio and video movement, not just a silent or static placeholder. YouTube recommends a rehearsal and a speed test.
- Watch Live Control Room’s stream-health feedback while sending the test feed. Confirm that audio and video arrive and that the bitrate and keyframe cadence are accepted.
- Verify that the sound is intelligible, the visual is present, and the broadcast is associated with the correct event before making it public or starting the scheduled program.
- During the stream, monitor the encoder process, VPS network connection, and YouTube health status. A running FFmpeg process does not by itself prove that viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
Troubleshoot common failures

Use YouTube’s stream-health diagnostics first to identify codec, bitrate, keyframe, or missing-track errors. If those look correct, investigate the VPS process, outbound network, and firewall policy. YouTube converts a broadcast into a video after it ends, but the resulting archive is not available immediately; processing time depends on broadcast length.

Using Kannada-language material does not change the technical ingest settings, but it does not exempt the program from copyright or YouTube policy. Before streaming, confirm that you have the necessary rights for the podcast recording, music, clips, artwork, and any other included material. Review YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization policies for your channel and content; do not assume that permission to use a recording automatically covers every song or visual embedded in it. Keep records of licenses or permissions relevant to the material you broadcast.
