There is no public confirmation that Cameron Diaz and Sean “Diddy” Combs were romantically involved. Reports describe social outings and later dating rumors, but Combs was quoted in 2008 saying, “We are just friends.” Later claims of a longer, on-and-off connection came from unnamed sources and remain unverified.
What is established about their relationship?
The strongest direct statement in the reporting is Combs’s response to speculation in 2008. The Irish Examiner reported that he rejected the idea that time spent with Diaz meant they were dating, quoting him as saying: “It is ridiculous that two celebrities of the opposite sex can’t just hang out with a group of friends without it being reported as more than that. We are just friends.” The newspaper attributed the quote to the New York Daily News.
The available accounts establish that the two were seen together and that people speculated about them; they do not establish a confirmed romance. A recent Marie Claire Australia timeline likewise says neither person confirmed a relationship. No confirming statement from Diaz appears in the cited coverage.
What did reports say about their sightings?
2008: outings and speculation
The Irish Examiner reported that Diaz and Combs were seen together at a New York venue and appeared close at the MTV Movie Awards. E! later recalled that their appearance at New York’s SubMercer bar had also prompted speculation. Neither account turns a public outing into proof that they were dating.

2011: dinner in New York
E! reported that Diaz and Combs had dinner at Catch in New York in October 2011. The outlet characterized the meal as friendly. The report documents a dinner, not a confirmed romantic relationship.
Where did the longer dating rumors come from?
In 2014, Us Weekly reported claims from unnamed sources and an onlooker. One account described a possible connection reaching back to 2008 and an encounter at a 2012 CAA gala; another said Combs expressed regret after learning Diaz was dating Benji Madden. These are accounts attributed to the magazine’s sources, not statements from Diaz or Combs.

A 2024 Showbiz Cheat Sheet article summarized unnamed-source claims as an “on and off” connection spanning 2008 to 2012. That broader timeline is not verified: it relies on anonymous accounts, and the article acknowledges that neither person publicly confirmed a relationship. It should be understood as a later characterization of the rumor, not an established chronology.

The careful answer is that a romantic relationship cannot be confirmed from the public reporting cited here. There are reports of social contact, Combs’s attributed statement that they were friends, and later anonymous-source claims. The evidence supports describing the story as dating rumors—not as a confirmed relationship.
