For a YouTube Live stream using H.264, start with 720p at 30 fps, a 3 Mbps video bitrate, CBR rate control, AAC stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz, and a keyframe every two seconds. These are YouTube’s recommended ingest settings—not a guarantee that a particular India-based VPS can sustain the stream. Test from the VPS you plan to use and monitor YouTube’s stream health before relying on it. If your destination is not YouTube, use that platform’s own ingest specifications instead.
Recommended YouTube settings for a devotional stream
YouTube’s live encoder guidance provides recommendations by codec, resolution and frame rate. For a mostly static or low-motion devotional visual, 720p30 is a conservative starting point. The targets below apply to YouTube Live H.264 ingest; they are not universal settings for every platform or VPS.
| Setting | Starting value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264, using FFmpeg’s libx264 |
Use the platform’s specification if streaming somewhere other than YouTube. |
| Resolution and frame rate | 720p at 30 fps | A practical starting point for a static or low-motion scene. The source and viewers’ devices and connections also matter. |
| Video bitrate | 3 Mbps at 720p30; 8 Mbps at 1080p30 | YouTube Help’s recommended H.264 live-ingest video bitrates. The page’s table has no stated publication or update year. |
| Rate control | CBR | Set the target with FFmpeg’s -b:v, which takes a bitrate in bits per second. For 3 Mbps, use 3000k or 3000000. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four. At 30 fps, a two-second GOP is 60 frames. |
| Audio | AAC stereo, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz | YouTube supports AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest and recommends these stereo settings. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMPS. Get the ingest address and stream key from YouTube’s live control room. |
See YouTube’s official live encoder settings for its recommendations. A mostly still image may need less bitrate to look clean than detailed motion, but do not treat that as a reason to ignore the platform’s recommended targets without checking the resulting stream.
Choose resolution and bitrate for the actual stream
Choose a target by balancing the visual, viewer experience and what the VPS can sustain. Moving footage and fine detail generally demand more bitrate than a still devotional image. Consider the likely devices and connections of your viewers, YouTube’s ingest recommendations, the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity and traffic terms, and whether the server must encode video or can send already encoded media.

For YouTube H.264, the recommended video target rises from 3 Mbps at 720p30 to 8 Mbps at 1080p30. That difference affects both outbound network use and, if FFmpeg is encoding, CPU demand. The source material, rather than the bitrate setting alone, determines whether the output can genuinely be 720p or 1080p.
Estimate VPS outbound capacity and test it
At the 720p30 starting point, 3 Mbps of video plus 128 kbps of audio is 3.128 Mbps before transport overhead. Allow additional headroom for overhead and bitrate variation. There is no verified universal capacity figure for India-based VPS plans: the provider, region, route, sustained egress allowance and traffic limits all matter.

- Check the VPS plan’s outbound bandwidth and traffic terms, including whether the allowance is sustained and whether monthly transfer caps or throttling apply.
- Run a speed test from the VPS, not just from your home network. YouTube Help specifically recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate.
- Send a representative stream from the actual VPS at the intended resolution and settings.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health during the test. Do not treat a brief successful connection as proof the VPS can sustain a continuous 24/7 stream.
Keep the stream key private. Use the ingest address and key shown in YouTube’s control room; do not publish them or expose them in shared scripts or logs.
Adapt this illustrative FFmpeg command

-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "rtmps://<platform-ingest>/<stream-key>"
What the key options do
-rereads the input at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible.-stream_loop -1loops this input indefinitely. It does not automatically arrange separate audio playlists or multiple files.-c:v libx264encodes video as H.264.-preset veryfasttrades some compression efficiency for lower encoding effort; confirm the VPS CPU can handle the chosen source and settings.-r 30targets 30 fps. Use a suitable frame-rate conversion strategy if the source differs; do not assume this setting alone produces the best motion handling for every source.-b:v 3000k,-maxrate 3000kand-bufsize 6000kexpress a 3 Mbps target, maximum rate and two-second-sized buffer for this example. FFmpeg documents bitrate values in bits per second.-g 60targets a 60-frame GOP, or two seconds at 30 fps.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2encodes stereo AAC at YouTube’s recommended bitrate and sample rate.-f flvselects the RTMP-family output container used for this ingest example.
If the source is not 720p, add an appropriate scale filter rather than assuming the command will resize it. Check that the input actually contains audio before specifying audio output, and map streams explicitly when the file has multiple audio or video tracks. For separate audio, playlists or several source files, build and test the input and mapping logic for that arrangement. FFmpeg documents its command-line options and codec options; the exact source layout determines which options are appropriate.
Common problems and fixes
- Stream health reports instability or dropped frames: the VPS may not sustain the outbound bitrate, or the route may fluctuate. Test from that server, check plan traffic limits, reduce the target resolution or bitrate within YouTube’s recommendations, and retest.
- YouTube reports an incorrect keyframe interval: check the output frame rate and GOP together. For 30 fps,
-g 60targets two seconds; do not exceed YouTube’s four-second maximum recommendation. - Audio is silent or the output fails: confirm the file contains an audio stream and that the selected mapping and channel layout match it. The sample assumes stereo audio is available or can be encoded as stereo.
- Video looks soft or blocky: check the source resolution and detail, then verify that the chosen bitrate matches the intended YouTube resolution and frame rate. A 720p30 target and a 1080p30 target have different published recommendations.
- FFmpeg stops after one play: confirm the input is the file you expect and that
-stream_loop -1is applied to the correct input. This option loops one input; it is not a playlist manager. - The VPS connects but cannot keep the stream live: a successful connection only proves that ingest began. Run a longer representative test and monitor stream health before depending on it continuously.
Or let it run in the cloud
If maintaining FFmpeg and a VPS is more work than you want, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud loops the videos, so nothing has to stay running at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60 fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and YouTube streaming, not camera-based live video. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
