This is a cautious starting profile—not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. Check that Quick Sync is available in your OBS encoder list, then test the actual video, audio, internet connection, and PC for an extended period before relying on it.
Recommended starting settings
These settings follow YouTube’s current H.264 ingestion guidance while keeping the first test at a moderate resolution and frame rate. The 30 fps choice is a practical starting point for an older computer, not a YouTube requirement or a proven performance limit for any particular PC.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP, for live encoder connections. Use YouTube’s current live-stream setup flow to obtain and enter the stream key; treat it as a password and do not share or publish it. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and setup guidance.
Check whether Quick Sync is available
Having an Intel processor does not by itself confirm that OBS can use Quick Sync. OBS Project documents QSV support on Windows and Linux with Intel HD Graphics on Core i-series 2xxx (Sandy Bridge) or newer, and recommends Core i-series 4xxx (Haswell) or newer because early QSV generations had lower quality. These are general compatibility notes, not a guarantee for every processor, operating system, driver, or OBS build.

- Open OBS and find the encoder selection in its output settings.
- Look for an Intel Quick Sync H.264 option. OBS menu labels and available controls can vary by version and configuration.
- If the option is absent, check the PC’s graphics hardware, operating system, Intel graphics driver, and OBS configuration. Intel’s guidance is that Quick Sync is unavailable to that configuration if it does not appear in the encoder dropdown.
- If Quick Sync is available, select it and configure the output profile above. OBS’s general hardware-encoding guidance notes that hardware encoding can reduce CPU workload, while older hardware encoders may deliver lower image quality than x264’s default veryfast preset at the same bitrate.

Match YouTube’s bitrate to the resolution
Do not use a 1080p bitrate just because it is common in general streaming advice. YouTube’s H.264 table gives these minimum and recommended video bitrates for live ingestion:

These are YouTube’s published H.264 ingestion recommendations, not proof that an older PC can encode the selected resolution continuously or that a connection can sustain the bitrate. For a first test, 720p30 is a sensible place to begin; test any higher target on the actual computer and connection.

Audio and picture-format details
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio, 44.1 kHz stereo sampling, and 128 Kbps stereo audio. For video it specifies square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and Rec. 709 for SDR. OBS may expose different controls depending on its version and selected encoder, and not every option will be available on older hardware. Use the relevant controls when present rather than assuming every setting can be forced.

Test the stream before leaving it on
- Run an upload-speed test, but do not choose a bitrate from a single headline result alone. Sustained capacity and stability matter.
- Start an unlisted or otherwise appropriate test stream using the intended resolution, bitrate, audio, and scene. Include movement and audio similar to the content you plan to stream; a static scene may not reveal the same issues as moving footage.
- Watch OBS’s connection and dropped-frame indicators and YouTube’s stream health while the test runs. YouTube detects encoder settings by default and transcodes live streams into different viewing formats, but that does not remove the need to monitor the incoming stream.
- For a 24/7 use case, run an extended test on the actual PC and network. Keep an eye on encoder warnings, dropped frames, YouTube stream health, heat or shutdowns, and internet interruptions. No single profile establishes that a particular machine, connection, or YouTube session will remain live continuously.

Troubleshoot by identifying the failing part
Quick Sync is missing from OBS
OBS cannot use an encoder that is not exposed in the current configuration. Check supported Intel graphics, the driver, operating system, and OBS setup. Do not infer QSV availability from the processor brand alone.

OBS reports encoder overload or encoding lag
This points toward the PC’s ability to encode the chosen workload, rather than automatically indicating a network problem. Reduce the workload and retest. If you are above 30 fps, lower the frame rate to 30; if the issue persists, step down resolution and bitrate together, then test again using the real scene and audio.
OBS shows dropped frames or a yellow/red connection indicator
OBS explains that increasing dropped frames with a yellow or red connection indicator means the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; OBS drops frames to avoid buffering. Check the connection’s sustained upload performance and stability, then reduce bitrate if needed. Lowering encoder workload alone may not fix network-side dropped frames. Frames keep dropping at a higher frame rate
Intel suggests reducing frame rate, such as to 30 fps, if frames continue dropping. Recheck both OBS indicators and YouTube stream health after changing the setting; one successful short test does not establish all-day stability.
