For an all-day prerecorded YouTube stream, configure OBS to use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS connection, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval; then choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate your computer and sustained upload connection can handle. YouTube’s encoder recommendations are not a universal OBS preset. Test the complete playback and monitor stream health before relying on a long session.
Choose settings that match your video and connection
YouTube’s live-encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for RTMP(S) ingestion, up to 60 fps. Its recommended bitrates vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are H.264 examples from YouTube’s livestream table—not upload settings or guarantees of picture quality or uninterrupted streaming. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

These recommendations describe the encoder feed YouTube ingests. A higher target may need more upload capacity and encoding headroom, and a bitrate number alone cannot guarantee a clean picture: source quality, motion, encoder performance, and network stability matter. For a prerecorded documentary, choose the target that preserves useful detail while remaining sustainable for the entire session. Do not select a resolution or frame rate just because the source file has it if the computer or connection cannot reliably send it.
Set the core encoder options
- Protocol: Use RTMPS when configuring YouTube ingestion; YouTube recommends it for secure transport.
- Rate control: Set constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second interval; YouTube says the interval must not exceed 4 seconds.
- Codec: Choose a codec supported by your available OBS encoder and YouTube ingestion. OBS labels and hardware encoder availability can differ by version and computer.
- Resolution, frame rate, and bitrate: Match the target format you intend to send and use YouTube’s live recommendations as a starting point, not a guarantee.
Use the live-encoder table, not YouTube’s separate upload-encoding recommendations. YouTube detects encoder settings and transcodes live video for different viewer devices.

Allow upload headroom for a long session
YouTube recommends about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the stream’s total outgoing bitrate. If you send primary and backup feeds, account for both. Measure upload capacity under conditions similar to the planned broadcast: other people, devices, or applications sharing the connection can reduce what OBS can use. A headline internet-plan speed is not proof that the same upload rate will remain available all day. YouTube’s streaming tips explain its bandwidth guidance.
If the stream health indicator shows connection problems or OBS reports dropped frames, lower the target bitrate or stream format and test again. Do not compensate for an unstable connection by selecting a bitrate that consumes all available upload capacity.

Connect OBS to a YouTube stream
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. Review YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio. Retrieve the server URL and stream key for the stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes the handoff.
- Enter the YouTube details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube or the compatible custom service option presented by your OBS version, and enter the server URL and stream key supplied by Studio. Labels and available choices can vary by version.
- Configure the encoder. In OBS’s output and video settings, select a compatible encoder and set the target resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval described above. Confirm that the output is using the intended YouTube stream rather than relying on an old key or saved event by assumption.
- Keep the key private. YouTube treats a stream key like a password: it directs and authenticates the encoder feed. Do not publish it or share it casually. Reset it in Studio if it is exposed. See YouTube’s stream-settings guidance.
- Start a private or otherwise appropriate test and check Studio’s Live Control Room preview. Confirm that the picture, sound, and event are correct before making the broadcast public.
YouTube’s encoder setup and management pages explain how to create, schedule, and manage an event; an exact Studio screen can change over time. Follow the current controls shown for your channel and event.
Prepare the prerecorded video and test the full loop
Before a long public session, play the actual prerecorded material through the same OBS scene and source arrangement you will use live. Check the whole segment, not only a still opening frame. Verify audio levels and continuity, transitions, any gaps, and whether the intended repeat behavior works. The reviewed official guidance does not establish one universal OBS looping workflow, so confirm that the playback source actually repeats as intended in your own scene.

- Use a test with audio and movement representative of the planned content; YouTube recommends this rather than testing with a static image alone.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream-health status while the test runs.
- Check OBS’s dropped-frame and encoding indicators. If they worsen, reduce load or bitrate and retest.
- Confirm the local recording file is being created and growing if you need a backup.
- Test the stream key, source playback, and network together before scheduling an extended broadcast.
YouTube’s recommendations are platform guidance, not a promise that a consumer computer, OBS setup, or home connection will remain online indefinitely. Long-session reliability depends on the whole chain: playback, encoding, power, and network.
Plan for the replay before you go live
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Do not assume a 24-hour broadcast will be saved as one complete replay. If the recording matters, make a local recording and verify that it is usable; consider ending and starting separate sessions before a session exceeds 12 hours if separate archived segments suit your plan. Monitor the local recording while live and ensure the machine has enough available storage for the duration and recording format you choose. Storage requirements vary with bitrate, duration, and format, so check the actual file growth during a test rather than assuming a drive size will be sufficient. After ending the YouTube event, stop OBS when you no longer need it.

YouTube says channels in the Partner Program can monetize a livestream and Studio offers monetization controls, but that does not establish that a particular channel or repetitive prerecorded format qualifies. Do not treat monetization as assured; check the channel’s current Studio eligibility and applicable policies. See encoder setup and stream settings.
Troubleshoot common all-day stream problems
