How to Stream a YouTube Live Playlist from an S3 Bucket with FFmpeg

A practical S3-to-YouTube Live workflow: retrieve and order files, check concat compatibility, send the feed with FFmpeg over RTMPS, and troubleshoot before going public.

Download the authorized S3 objects you want to play, put them in the intended order in an FFmpeg concat manifest, then send the resulting feed to YouTube Live over RTMPS. The files must be compatible for concat stream-copy; otherwise normalize or re-encode them. This is a component-by-component workflow, not a universal command for playing a private S3 bucket directly: AWS documents ways to retrieve objects, FFmpeg documents how to concatenate files, and YouTube documents how to ingest an encoder feed. Test the complete setup privately before making it public.

What you need before you start

  • An S3 bucket or prefix containing media you are authorized to use, plus AWS credentials or other access authorization that can retrieve the objects.
  • A machine or compute instance with AWS CLI and FFmpeg installed, enough local storage for the files, and an outbound network connection that can remain available for the stream.
  • A YouTube channel set up for live streaming, a stream configured in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, and its current ingest address and stream key.
  • A playlist order and source files you have permission to broadcast. YouTube Live does not make copyrighted or otherwise restricted material safe to stream; check your rights and the platform’s current rules before broadcasting.

AWS documents retrieval through its console, CLI, SDKs, or REST API. For a playlist that you can inspect and order before going live, downloading the chosen objects to a working directory is the most straightforward option. AWS notes that external data transfer and GET requests can incur charges; the amount depends on your use and applicable AWS pricing.

1. Retrieve the S3 files

Configure authorized AWS access

Use an authorized AWS access method appropriate to your environment, such as an IAM role on a cloud instance or locally configured CLI credentials. Do not put long-lived AWS credentials in the script, a manifest, or a URL. If another account controls the objects, ask the owner to grant access; an owner-generated presigned URL is another possible way to provide temporary access.

Download the playlist objects

For a bucket prefix, sync the selected objects into a local directory. Replace the example bucket, prefix, and destination with your own values:

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
aws s3 sync s3://YOUR-BUCKET/YOUR-PREFIX/ ./playlist-media/

For an individual object, AWS also documents the get-object operation:

aws s3api get-object
  --bucket YOUR-BUCKET
  --key 'YOUR-PREFIX/clip-01.mp4'
  ./playlist-media/clip-01.mp4

Check that every intended object arrived, that the downloaded files open, and that the host has enough disk space. A sync retrieves objects under a prefix; it does not decide the creative playback order for your broadcast.

2. Build and validate the ordered playlist

Create a concat manifest

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text file and processes the listed files sequentially. Create playlist.ffconcat in the working directory, using relative paths to the downloaded files and the order you want viewers to hear and see them:

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'playlist-media/clip-01.mp4'
file 'playlist-media/clip-02.mp4'
file 'playlist-media/clip-03.mp4'

Use simple, trusted filenames and paths. The example assumes the manifest and media are in the same working directory. If filenames contain apostrophes or unusual characters, quote and escape them according to FFmpeg’s concat script syntax rather than copying the example literally.

Check whether stream-copy is suitable

The concat demuxer expects the files to have the same streams, codecs, and time base. If the video or audio streams differ, concatenation with -c copy may fail or produce artifacts at a boundary; stream-copy does not repair mismatches. Inspect the media first, and normalize or re-encode incompatible clips to common stream characteristics before joining them.

FFmpeg derives timestamps from file durations. Inaccurate or unavailable duration metadata can cause timestamp problems or artifacts between clips. Correct the media metadata or use explicit duration directives in the manifest where you have reliable durations. Do not guess durations to make a playlist fit.

Choose how to handle a continuing playlist

If the intended broadcast should repeat the entire manifest, FFmpeg can loop the concat input with -stream_loop -1. Without that option, it reads the listed files once and then reaches the end of the input. A loop repeats the same files in the same order; it does not refresh the manifest or discover new S3 objects during the broadcast.

3. Set up the YouTube Live feed

Copy the current ingest details

In YouTube Studio, create or select a stream in Live Control Room and copy the encoder’s current server or ingestion URL and stream key. Keep the key secret: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to that configured stream. Do not publish it, put it in a shared manifest, or commit it to source control.

YouTube’s API represents the incoming feed as a liveStream and the audience-facing event as a liveBroadcast; API-based setup creates and binds those resources. The ingestion information can include primary and backup addresses and a stream name. Depending on the encoder input field, the stream name may need to be joined to the server URL. Use the exact values and format presented for your configured stream rather than assuming one universal endpoint.

Prefer RTMPS for an ordinary FFmpeg encoder feed

YouTube recommends RTMPS for conventional encoder use. It encrypts transport between the encoder and ingest endpoint. HLS ingestion is a separate protocol with distinct media and upload requirements; it is not the same as reading an HLS playlist from S3. Unless you have a specific need for YouTube HLS ingest, RTMPS is the simpler default for this prerecorded playlist workflow.

4. Start FFmpeg and send the feed

Example for compatible 720p, 30 fps material

This illustrative command assumes that the clips already have compatible streams, the playlist is suitable for a 720p, 30 fps H.264 output, and the value of YOUTUBE_RTMPS_TARGET is the exact RTMPS target in the format your FFmpeg input expects, including the stream key or name if required. YouTube Help lists 8 Mbps as its recommended bitrate for 720p at 30 fps with H.264; that is a recommendation for those settings, not a guarantee of quality or a universal bitrate for other formats.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1
  -f concat -i playlist.ffconcat
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30
  -b:v 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_TARGET"

-re reads the input at its intended playback rate instead of sending the files as fast as the machine can process them. -stream_loop -1 repeats the manifest indefinitely. The command encodes video as H.264 and audio as AAC, then muxes the feed for the RTMPS target. It is an example integration, not a validated universal script; check that your FFmpeg build has the encoders shown and test against your actual stream configuration.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Do not use the 720p bitrate example for a different resolution or frame rate without checking YouTube’s current encoder guidance. For comparison, YouTube Help lists 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps with H.264. Match bitrate, resolution, frame rate, codec, and keyframe settings to your output and available sustained upload bandwidth; no single setting suits every source and connection. Keep enough bandwidth headroom for a stable upload.

Stream-copy alternative for already compatible files

If all listed files have matching stream characteristics and their codecs and container are suitable for the YouTube feed, you can try stream-copy instead of re-encoding:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1
  -f concat -i playlist.ffconcat
  -c copy -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_TARGET"

This avoids another encode, but it does not make incompatible files compatible or correct bad duration metadata. If it reports errors or the stream is unstable at transitions, inspect the clips and use normalized inputs or the re-encoding route.

Store the RTMPS target and key securely. Putting the full target directly in a command can expose it through shell history, logs, or process listings, depending on the system. Use an appropriately protected method for your environment and avoid sharing command output that reveals the key.

5. Test privately and monitor the stream

  1. Start with a private or unlisted test. Include representative motion, scene changes, and audio—not just a static opening frame.
  2. Confirm the preview. Wait for YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and check that video and audio are both present before making a scheduled stream public. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s guidance describes waiting for the preview before selecting Go live.
  3. Watch stream health and warnings. If YouTube reports quality or connection issues, review its stream-health feedback and the current encoder recommendations for your selected resolution and frame rate.
  4. Check the audience-facing result. Verify the final watch page as well as the encoder preview, and check a clip boundary to catch timestamp, picture, or audio problems.
  5. Keep the encoder host running. FFmpeg, access to the staged files, and a working outbound connection must remain available for the full session. If you stop the process or the host loses network access, the feed stops.

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after the encoder stops. Platform behavior can change, so confirm the current handling in YouTube Studio if the archive is important to your workflow.

6. Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
YouTube receives no feed The stream is not configured or the endpoint/key is wrong, incomplete, or no longer current. Confirm the selected stream in Live Control Room, copy its current ingest address and stream key again, and verify whether the encoder expects the stream name joined to the server URL.
FFmpeg cannot find a listed file The manifest path is wrong, the working directory differs from the assumed directory, or a file was not downloaded. Check the local file paths and permissions, confirm the working directory, and verify the S3 retrieval completed for every manifest entry.
Picture or audio glitches at a clip boundary Listed clips have different streams, codecs, time bases, or inaccurate durations. Inspect the files, correct reliable duration information, and normalize or re-encode mismatched clips before concatenating.
YouTube shows quality warnings Output settings do not match the selected resolution or frame rate, or available upload bandwidth is insufficient or unstable. Use stream-health feedback, check the current guidance for the chosen output settings, and test on the same host and connection intended for the broadcast.
The stream ends when the playlist finishes The concat input was read once rather than looped. Use -stream_loop -1 before the concat input if repeating the same ordered playlist is intended.
The stream stops unexpectedly The FFmpeg process, host, file access, or network connection stopped working. Check the process and its error output, host availability, local disk and file access, and outbound network. A cloud instance can keep the host remote, but it still requires access controls, cost management, and operational monitoring.

Alternatives and trade-offs

Choice Useful when Trade-off
Download objects, then use the concat demuxer You want a locally inspectable, deliberately ordered playlist and can stage the media. Requires local storage and retrieval time; AWS transfer and request charges may apply. Concat stream-copy requires compatible inputs.
Read objects remotely or build automation around S3 You have a specific reason to avoid staging files locally or need a custom retrieval workflow. Access authorization and ongoing object availability must be handled. The official component documentation does not establish one universal authenticated S3-to-FFmpeg playlist command or continuously refreshed bucket manifest.
Re-encode normalized inputs Clips differ and need a common output format. Uses compute and adds an encoding step; it can make inputs consistent but does not guarantee a good result without testing.
Use RTMPS ingestion You want the ordinary encoder path to YouTube Live. Requires the correct current server address and stream key and a continuously running encoder.
Use YouTube HLS ingestion Your workflow specifically requires YouTube’s HLS ingest method. YouTube’s HLS guidance calls for muxed M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, closed GOPs, HTTPS upload, and Media Playlists plus media segments; Master Playlists are ignored. YouTube characterizes HLS as relatively higher latency than RTMP- and WebRTC-based ingestion. Do not confuse this ingest protocol with an HLS playlist stored in S3.

Or let it run in the cloud

The DIY method above keeps FFmpeg running on your own host and uses media retrieved from S3. If you would rather keep a prerecorded YouTube channel live without leaving that computer on, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload your video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and does not directly stream from your S3 bucket; you would upload the media to StreamNeo. StreamNeo is for YouTube streaming.

  • Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
  • One flat price per slot covers any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
  • Monthly: $9.99 per month.
