The phrase can mean visible nudity, erotic storytelling, or suggestive art—different things that should not be collapsed into one score. This guide instead explains the history behind the question and highlights documented examples, while distinguishing adult comics from comics whose importance lies in censorship history.
What does “showed the most skin” mean in comics?
It might refer to how much nudity appears on a page, whether a comic tells an erotic story, or how suggestively it depicts characters. Those are not interchangeable measures: a sexually explicit story is not necessarily the same thing as a comic with frequent nudity, and suggestive art does not establish either. No reliable statistic or consistent comparison method establishes which 15 comics depicted the most skin.
For that reason, the examples below are not ranked. They are selected to show distinct ways adult subject matter, underground publishing, and censorship intersect in comics history. The list includes erotic comics as well as a censorship case that is relevant to the history of comic-book restrictions, not evidence of especially revealing imagery.
Why nudity became a point of contention
The Comics Code and mainstream publishing
The Comics Code Authority was established in 1954 as an industry self-regulatory body. A history from the Jim Crow Museum describes the Code as restricting content including graphic violence, nudity, and suggestiveness. Those rules help explain why comics published within the mainstream Code framework faced constraints around sexualized imagery. Jim Crow Museum: Comics and the Comics Code

Underground comix outside the Code framework
Underground comix developed independently of mainstream publishers’ Code restrictions. Reference accounts associate the movement with more open treatment of nudity, sex, profanity, and politics, but underground comix were not a single genre and not every title focused on sexual content. Their independence made room for subjects and imagery that the mainstream Code framework discouraged. Encyclopaedia Britannica: Underground comix
Three examples that clarify the subject
Cherry: erotic material in a familiar cartoon mode
Larry Welz’s Cherry is identified as an erotic comic with an Archie-like parody approach. It illustrates how erotic subject matter can be paired with recognizable cartoon conventions. That description establishes its adult orientation, but it does not support a claim about how much nudity appears in any particular issue. Encyclopaedia Britannica: Erotic comics

Omaha the Cat Dancer: adult content with melodrama
Kate Worley and Reed Waller’s Omaha the Cat Dancer combines sexually explicit material with melodrama and anthropomorphic characters. It is a useful reminder that adult comics can have narrative ambitions beyond erotic content. The Grand Comics Database records issues and collected-edition reprints; that bibliographic record does not establish current stock or availability. Skin: a censorship-history example, not a nudity entry
Peter Milligan and Brendan McCarthy’s Skin concerns 1970s skinhead culture. Roger Sabin’s essay, as summarized by eNotes, notes that the story was dropped from the anthology Crisis. That publication controversy makes it relevant to discussions of censorship, but it does not establish that the comic belongs on a list ranked by nudity. eNotes: Comics and censorship

How to judge a claim that a comic showed “the most”
A defensible comparison would need a stated scope and consistent evidence. For each title, it would identify the specific issue or edition and distinguish among nudity, sexual situations, suggestive presentation, and adult themes. It would also say whether the comparison covers mainstream comics, magazines, independent work, underground comix, or erotic comics. Without that groundwork, calling any selection “the most” turns a subjective impression into a factual-sounding ranking.
- Publication context: Was the work issued by a mainstream publisher, as a magazine, independently, or as underground comix?
- Editorial purpose: Is it erotic storytelling, satire, drama, superhero fiction, or another kind of work?
- Type of content: Does the claim concern nudity, sexual situations, suggestive art, or broader adult themes?
- Evidence: Does a specific issue, archive, or publisher description substantiate the claim?
- History: Was the work shaped by Code-era restrictions, independent distribution, or a documented publication dispute?
Adult comics are a broad category aimed mainly at adult readers; erotic comics are one part of that category, not a synonym for all adult comics. That distinction matters when a reader is looking for a particular kind of content rather than a generic “adult” label. Encyclopaedia Britannica: Erotic comics
