Set the keyframe interval for OBS’s streaming encoder to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. In OBS, go to Settings → Output, change Output Mode to Advanced, open Streaming, and set Keyframe Interval to 2 seconds for the encoder you use to go live. Set the streaming keyframe interval to 2 seconds
- In OBS Studio, open Settings → Output.
- Set Output Mode to Advanced.
- Open the Streaming tab. Find Keyframe Interval in the settings for the encoder that will send your live stream to YouTube.
- Enter 2 if the control is expressed in seconds, then apply the change. Labels and controls can vary by OBS version and encoder, so confirm the value shown for the active streaming encoder. OBS documents encoder-specific output settings in its advanced settings guide.
Change the streaming encoder’s setting—not a separate recording encoder setting. A recording profile can have its own controls and does not determine the keyframes sent in your live broadcast.
Use the right value if the encoder asks for frames
Some encoders or custom settings express the interval as a number of frames rather than seconds. Convert using the live output frame rate:
- 30 fps: 2 seconds × 30 frames per second = 60 frames. YouTube gives 60 frames at 30 fps as the equivalent of a 2-second interval.
- 60 fps: 2 seconds × 60 frames per second = 120 frames.
Do not enter 60 as a frame count when streaming at 60 fps if the intent is a 2-second interval; that would represent only one second. See YouTube’s live-streaming troubleshooting guidance for its 30 fps example.

Check the rest of the YouTube encoder setup
The keyframe interval is only one part of a stable ingest. YouTube’s recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so select the matching row in its current encoder requirements rather than treating one bitrate as right for every cartoon stream.
- Protocol and transport: YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
- Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among supported options. Check the current requirements for the codec you actually select.
- Frame rate and bitrate: YouTube’s guidance allows frame rates up to 60 fps and calls for CBR bitrate encoding for RTMP/RTMPS. Its bitrate recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec; do not extrapolate a figure from a different row.
- Keyframes: Keep the interval at 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Keyframe frequency is separate from stream latency. Latency describes the delay from capture to playback for viewers; changing latency is not a substitute for correcting the keyframe setting. YouTube’s stream management guidance explains stream keys and latency. Treat the stream key as a credential and reset it through YouTube if it is compromised.

Test the cartoon loop before leaving it live
A correct interval does not guarantee that a 24/7 broadcast will stay connected unattended. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned event and monitoring stream health and messages. For a cartoon loop, test a representative section that includes animated scene changes, any continuous audio, and at least one loop transition.
- Start a test broadcast using the same OBS streaming encoder, output frame rate, codec, resolution, and bitrate you intend to use.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health status and messages during the test. Confirm the ingest is healthy and that playback continues through a scene change and the loop transition.
- If YouTube reports a stream-setting error or buffering, check the active streaming encoder, interval, and output frame rate together. YouTube identifies incorrect keyframe frequency as a possible setting error and says an interval that is too long can cause buffering.
- Keep monitoring during the real broadcast. A successful short test is useful evidence about the tested setup, not a promise of continuous operation over time.
Troubleshoot keyframe and stream-health problems

Keep a 24/7 cartoon channel compliant
Technical settings do not grant rights to the cartoons, music, or other material in a broadcast, and a successful ingest does not establish that a channel meets YouTube’s content or monetization rules. Use material you have the right to stream, and check YouTube’s current policies for the particular content and channel.
