For an upcoming scheduled encoder stream, open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go Live > Manage. Select the scheduled stream, choose Edit, update its thumbnail in the stream details, and save. YouTube’s help pages do not explicitly confirm that you can change a thumbnail in place while a 24/7 stream is already live, so treat the scheduled-stream workflow as the documented route—not a guarantee of an instant live-broadcast update.
Change the thumbnail on an upcoming scheduled stream
- Open Live Control Room: In YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go Live.
- Find the scheduled stream: Open the Manage tab and select the stream you want to update.
- Edit its details: Choose Edit, locate the thumbnail control in the stream details, upload the image, and save. YouTube says encoder and mobile stream metadata can be set during creation or edited from the stream settings or scheduling page. YouTube’s live stream settings guide describes those controls.
YouTube documents the Edit route for stream metadata and separately documents its thumbnail-upload steps; its help pages do not spell out every thumbnail-specific click in one combined scheduled-stream procedure. If the thumbnail control is not visible in the stream editor, use the general video-thumbnail route below where the stream appears as a video in Studio.
Use YouTube Studio’s thumbnail controls
- In YouTube Studio, open Content and select the video.
- Under Thumbnail, choose Upload file and select your image.
- Select Save.
YouTube requires a verified account to upload a custom thumbnail. Its current guidance recommends a 16:9 image, JPG or PNG, with a recommended resolution of 3840 × 2160 pixels and a minimum width of 640 pixels. The listed file-size limits are 50 MB on desktop and 2 MB on mobile. Check YouTube’s custom thumbnail guidance for current requirements and policy details.
YouTube warns that thumbnail changes may take time to appear. Do not assume that the new image will show immediately to every viewer.

If the stream is already live
The official guidance cited here does not explicitly confirm whether you can change a thumbnail in place during an active broadcast, including a 24/7 stream. It documents editing stream metadata through stream settings or while scheduling, and it documents a general thumbnail workflow, but it does not settle the active-broadcast case. If Studio exposes an editable thumbnail for the live stream, you can try saving the change; allow time for it to propagate and verify the result. If the control is unavailable, the documented option is to update the details for a scheduled stream before it starts.
A thumbnail edit is a Studio metadata action. YouTube’s encoder guide describes the stream URL and stream key as the connection between an encoder and the YouTube feed; the thumbnail instructions do not indicate that changing the image requires changing the stream key or encoder settings. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

What the 24/7 format changes—and what it does not establish
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited guidance does not establish that every 24/7 broadcast is treated as one uninterrupted stream, or explain how thumbnail edits behave across a long-running broadcast. If your channel’s setup involves scheduled restarts or separate stream events, edit the relevant scheduled event rather than assuming one thumbnail change will cover every future broadcast.
Kids’ channel considerations
The thumbnail instructions cited above do not say that setting a video or stream as Made for Kids blocks thumbnail editing. Do not confuse that with YouTube’s separate restriction on creating a mobile live-stream Short highlight: that feature requires an eligible vertical stream made in the mobile app, chat, and a stream duration between 10 minutes and 12 hours; the stream must not be set as Made for Kids. The restriction concerns Short highlights, not the thumbnail workflow. See YouTube’s live-stream promotion guidance.
