You can use an Unraid server to run a software encoder that sends a prerecorded video to a YouTube Live event in a loop. The server hosts the encoder; YouTube Studio supplies the event’s stream URL and private stream key. You still need to configure the encoder, start the event, and monitor the connection—running Unraid continuously does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream.
What this setup does—and what it does not
This guide is for sending a video file through an encoder into a YouTube Live event. It is different from uploading a regular YouTube video or scheduling a Premiere: the encoder sends a live feed to the event, even though the footage was recorded earlier.
Unraid can host the encoder in a Docker container or virtual machine. You provide the media file, configure the encoder to repeat it, and connect the encoder to YouTube with the event’s stream URL and key. The exact container image, loop control, and command syntax vary by encoder, so follow the current documentation for the specific image you choose. The steps below do not assume a particular community container has been tested.
Check YouTube eligibility and prepare the event
Before configuring Unraid, confirm that the channel can go live. YouTube’s current help says the channel must be verified, must have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take time, so do this ahead of your planned broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and set its title, description, and privacy.
- Choose the event and ingest settings you intend to use. Copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room; the key connects the encoder to the event.
- Keep the key private. YouTube describes it as functioning like the stream’s password and address. If it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder. See YouTube stream settings.
Set up the encoder on Unraid
- Confirm Docker is enabled and locate your media. Put the video in a user share that the Unraid host can access. Unraid’s share documentation explains how shares are managed.
- Add an encoder container using its documented template. Use a maintained image and follow that project’s current setup instructions. Map the host folder containing the video to a media path inside the container. If the encoder only reads the video, make this media mapping read-only.
- Persist the encoder’s configuration. Map a host folder in
appdatato the configuration path documented by the encoder. Unraid explains that keeping variable application data outside the Docker image preserves it when the image is recreated. See its container configuration guidance. - Keep networking simple. Leave the template’s network mode at its recommended default unless the encoder requires another mode. Unraid documents bridge as the common default; bridge mode exposes only ports you explicitly map. A basic encoder sending an outbound stream generally does not need inbound port forwarding. Do not expose the Unraid management interface or an unnecessary encoder web interface to the public internet.
- Point the encoder to the container-side media path. A host path and its mapped container path are not interchangeable. Select the path visible inside the container, then enable the encoder’s repeat or loop option if you want continuous playback. Loop labels and controls are encoder-specific; verify them in that encoder’s current documentation.
- Enter YouTube’s ingest details. Paste the stream URL and key into the encoder’s corresponding fields. Use RTMPS when the encoder supports it; YouTube recommends this encrypted ingest option.
- Start the encoder and check the event. Confirm that video and audio appear in the Live Control Room preview, then start the scheduled event. Test the entire path and watch the stream before relying on unattended operation.
Unraid’s container guidance covers templates and host-to-container mappings. Do not assume that a container’s settings, paths, or loop behavior match another encoder image.
Choose stream settings and network capacity
Use the current YouTube settings for the resolution and frame rate you select rather than borrowing a bitrate from an unrelated setup. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. It also recommends RTMPS. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

- Storage Purpose-Built for Data Security – A NAS designed to keep your data safe, the LS200 features a closed system to reduce vulnerabilities from 3rd party apps and SSL encryption for secure file transfers.
- Back Up Multiple Computers & Devices – NAS Navigator management utility and PC backup software included. NAS Navigator 2 for macOS 15 and earlier. You can set up automated backups of data on your computers.
- Bitrate: Choose a value from YouTube’s current table for your chosen resolution and frame rate. The appropriate value depends on those settings.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval if the encoder exposes this control; do not exceed four seconds, per YouTube’s guidance.
- Protocol: Prefer RTMPS when supported. YouTube Help states, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.”
- Upload capacity: YouTube recommends available upload capacity above the total outgoing stream bitrate and suggests 20% headroom. Use a reliable network and check the actual connection under operating conditions.
- Preview and monitoring: Check the Live Control Room preview and monitor audio and video quality. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing the setup and monitoring the live output.
These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee of continuity. A running server cannot prevent a network failure, a YouTube-side interruption, or an encoder problem.
Plan for looping, interruptions, and long events
A loop repeats the file; it does not make delivery uninterruptible. Arrange a way to notice if the encoder stops, the connection drops, the storage pool fills, or YouTube interrupts the event. Test recovery rather than assuming the container will resume correctly after every failure.

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on YouTube to preserve a complete archive of a 24/7 or longer event. Keep the original file, or configure a separate local recording workflow and monitor its available storage if retaining a full-length copy matters. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The encoder cannot find the video: Check that the host folder is mapped into the container and that the encoder is using the container-side path, not the Unraid host path. Confirm the container can read the file.
- The stream does not appear in Live Control Room: Verify that the encoder is running, the correct event’s stream URL and key are entered, and the connection uses the intended ingest protocol. Check the preview before starting the event.
- YouTube reports unstable or poor stream quality: Check available upload capacity against the total outgoing bitrate, allowing the headroom YouTube recommends. Confirm CBR, the resolution-specific bitrate, and the keyframe interval in the encoder and YouTube guidance.
- The stream stops after a container recreation: Check that the configuration directory is mapped to persistent host storage. Re-enter or verify the event details if the encoder’s saved configuration is missing.
- The video plays once and stops: Confirm the encoder’s loop/repeat setting and its supported behavior for the chosen input. These controls differ by image, so consult that encoder’s documentation.
- The stream key may be exposed: Reset it in Live Control Room and replace the value in the encoder before continuing.
- The live event is unavailable: Check channel verification, live-streaming restrictions, age eligibility, and whether first-time live access has finished enabling.
Unraid software encoder or a dedicated appliance?
Using Unraid makes sense if you want to reuse a server you already maintain and are comfortable managing its container, mappings, configuration, and monitoring. A dedicated encoder is another option if you want an appliance separate from Unraid. YouTube names the AJA HELO Plus and describes a PlayToStream prerecorded-media feature in its encoder setup guide. The available information here does not establish a controlled cost, reliability, or performance comparison, so neither option can be called categorically better.
