Add subtitles to the video
You can add subtitles during upload or to a video that is already in YouTube Studio. The dedicated route is YouTube Studio → Subtitles.

Sign in to YouTube Studio. Upload the video, or open the existing video in Studio.

In the left menu, select Subtitles, then select the video.

Select Add language and choose the language spoken in the video or the language of the subtitles you are adding.

Under Subtitles, select Add, then choose the method that fits your materials.

Choose a subtitle method
| Method | Use it when | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Upload file | You have a subtitle or caption file ready. | The file contains spoken text and timestamps; some formats can also include positioning and styling. Follow Studio’s current format prompt and indicate whether the file already includes timing. |
| Auto-sync | You have a transcript without timings. | Enter or upload the transcript. It must match the spoken language, and that language must be supported by YouTube speech recognition. YouTube advises against this option for videos over an hour or with poor audio quality. |
| Type manually | You want to enter and control the captions yourself. | Type while playing the video; YouTube sets timings automatically. Include relevant non-speech sounds, such as applause or thunder, when they help viewers understand what is happening. |
| Automatic captions | YouTube has generated captions for the video. | Automatic captions may be available in the video’s default language. Review them for accuracy and completeness before relying on them. |
When you finish, follow the editor’s instructions to save, publish, or close the track. With auto-sync, YouTube says timing may take a few minutes; the transcript is published automatically when processing is ready.
Schedule the video as a Premiere
Once the subtitle track is saved or published, set the video’s schedule and Premiere status. You can add subtitles before the scheduled event; viewers do not have to wait for the Premiere to begin to access the prepared track.

In YouTube Studio, upload or select the video and proceed to its visibility and scheduling settings.

Choose Schedule, then set the date and time.

Check Set as Premiere and complete the Premiere setup.

Select Schedule or Done, as shown in the workflow.
Scheduling creates a public watch page that you can share in advance. Viewers can set reminders and use the page’s comments and chat features. YouTube’s Premiere tips recommend scheduling at least 24 hours ahead so audiences around the world have an opportunity to see the thumbnail in their subscriptions feed. That is a platform recommendation, not a guarantee of reach or attendance.

Shorts are not supported as Premieres.

360 and VR180 videos, and output above 1080p, are not supported for Premieres.

A Community Guidelines strike can prevent a scheduled Premiere from publishing during the penalty period. Reschedule it after that period ends.
When someone else is preparing the subtitles
You can delegate subtitle work using YouTube’s Subtitle Editor role, with limitations. The channel owner or manager must set the video language before an editor can work on that video. The role only provides access to the Subtitles section and is not available for Brand Accounts. Check YouTube’s channel permissions guidance for the current role details.
Optional Premiere customization
YouTube supports countdown themes and lengths. A trailer has additional eligibility and content requirements: the cited guidance requires more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes, gives a trailer duration of 15 seconds to 3 minutes, and recommends matching the main video’s aspect ratio and resolution. Review YouTube’s Premiere setup guidance before preparing a trailer.
