To stream a prerecorded video from Windows 11 to YouTube Live, create or schedule a YouTube live event, connect an encoder to the event with its stream URL and key, and use your video file as the encoder’s video and audio source. For a scheduled event, start the encoder, check the incoming preview in YouTube Live Control Room, then select Go live.
Before you start
You need a verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and no live streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube recommends testing your setup with a private or unlisted stream before the public event. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
- A Windows 11 computer and the prerecorded video file you want to play.
- An encoder that can send a stream to YouTube and use a local video file as its source. YouTube lists OBS among compatible software encoders, but no particular app is required.
- A reliable upload connection that can sustain your chosen output quality.
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before a livestream and starting it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. These are preparation recommendations, not technical requirements. Use the time to check the preview, confirm the event is accessible, and test the file’s audio and picture.
Create or schedule the YouTube event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live.
- For a new stream, use the Stream tab. To schedule the broadcast, open Manage and create a scheduled stream.
- Set the title, description, audience setting, and privacy deliberately. Privacy defaults differ by age: for users aged 13–17, streams default to private; for users 18 and older, they default to public. You can change the setting.
- If you schedule the event, use its watch page to share the broadcast in advance; viewers can set reminders.

Connect the encoder to YouTube
- Open your encoder and select its YouTube destination preset if it offers one.
- If it does not, copy the event’s stream URL into the encoder’s server field and its stream key into the key field. Use the values shown for the relevant event in YouTube Live Control Room or stream settings.
- Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not include it in screenshots or share it. A channel owner or manager can reset a compromised key; keys can also be reused or managed in stream settings. See Manage live stream settings.
Add and check the prerecorded video
- In the encoder, add the local video file as the video source. Configure the file’s audio as the stream audio if your encoder exposes a separate audio selection.
- Check the encoder’s program preview: confirm that the intended picture and sound appear, and that playback advances as expected.
- If you want the file to repeat, enable looping in the encoder if it supports it. File-source controls and loop behavior vary by application, so check that encoder’s documentation rather than assuming a particular control name or seamless transition.
The encoder sends the resulting video and audio program to YouTube through the URL and key. You do not need a camera or capture card for this file-based workflow.
Choose a stable stream quality
Use a resolution and frame rate that match your material and that your upload connection can sustain. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, and publishes recommended bitrate ranges by resolution and frame rate in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. There is no single bitrate that is right for every connection: test the chosen settings under conditions similar to the actual broadcast, including comparable motion and audio.

For a standard prerecorded video, RTMP or RTMPS is generally the straightforward encoder route. YouTube also supports HLS ingest for cases such as HDR or codecs outside RTMP support, but HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency. Use it only when your encoder or media requirements call for it; see Set up an HLS stream. HDR is a specialized workflow: YouTube’s documented OBS RTMP HDR instructions specify OBS 30.1 or later and particular sources and encoding settings. Do not apply those settings to an ordinary SDR stream; see Stream HDR video on YouTube.
Preview, go live, and monitor
- For a scheduled event, start sending the encoder output and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room.
- Check the preview before the event. Confirm the correct video and audio are present and that the event is accessible with the intended privacy setting.
- When ready, select Go live in Live Control Room.
- While the stream runs, monitor stream health and the audio and video. YouTube’s Streaming tips recommend checking quality throughout the broadcast.
End the stream and find its archive
End the event in Live Control Room, then stop sending output from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and can be found in YouTube Studio’s Live tab. For longer streams, do not assume an automatic archive will be available.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | What to check |

| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | Confirm the event’s stream URL and key are entered in the right encoder fields. Check for a copied character or whitespace error and verify that the encoder is connected to the intended event. |
| The preview appears, but the scheduled event has not started | For a scheduled broadcast, the encoder feed alone does not put the event live. Check the preview and select Go live in Live Control Room when ready. |
| The stream has picture but no sound | Check that the file’s intended audio is selected or routed to the encoder output, then verify sound in the encoder preview before going live. |
| The video does not repeat | Check whether the encoder’s file-source settings include looping. Controls differ by app; verify repeat behavior with a private or unlisted test stream. |
| The stream stutters or loses quality | Choose a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate that the upload connection can sustain, then test again. Consult YouTube’s bitrate guidance rather than relying on a universal setting. |
| The stream key may have been exposed | Reset the key in YouTube stream settings and update the encoder with the replacement. Do not share the key in screenshots or messages. |
