How to Choose Bitrate Settings for a 24/7 Prerecorded YouTube Stream

Use YouTube’s live-ingest bitrate recommendations for prerecorded video sent as a live stream. Match codec, resolution, and frame rate, then test bandwidth and stream health.

For a prerecorded program sent to YouTube as a live stream, use YouTube’s live-encoder bitrate recommendations—not its separate recommendations for uploaded video files. Your starting bitrate depends on the stream’s codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30, or 17 Mbps at 1080p60. Then confirm your upload connection can sustain that rate with headroom and test the complete setup before relying on it continuously.

Choose the live bitrate table, not the video-upload table

A prerecorded show becomes a live ingest stream when an encoder plays it and sends the feed to YouTube Live. Choose settings for that live feed. YouTube transcodes live streams into viewer formats, so the encoder bitrate is what you send to YouTube; it does not promise that every viewer will receive video at that bitrate. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations apply to this workflow.

Do not apply the separate upload-file recommendations to the encoder. For example, YouTube’s H.264 file-upload recommendation for 1080p at standard frame rates is 8 Mbps, while its live-ingest recommendation for H.264 at 1080p30 is 14 Mbps. The figures describe different workflows, not competing settings for the same feed.

Use YouTube’s recommended live ingest bitrate

Start with the row matching your ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate. These are YouTube’s recommended live ingest bitrates, not a special preset for 24/7 streaming.

YouTube also publishes minimum bitrate settings, which are lower than the recommended targets. A minimum is not the preferred target when your connection can sustain the recommended rate; use the recommended value as your starting point.

Decide what resolution, frame rate, and codec to send

Choose in this order: the resolution and frame rate your program can genuinely support, a codec your encoder and workflow support, and a bitrate your upload connection can sustain reliably. YouTube’s guidance is to select the highest supported resolution and bitrate that can be streamed, but a nominally higher setting is not useful if the connection cannot hold it.

  • Resolution and frame rate: Match the source where practical. A 1080p30 program does not become more detailed just because you send it as 1080p60; avoid creating unnecessary processing or bandwidth demands.
  • Codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for live video. Confirm that your encoder supports the codec and settings you select. The recommended bitrate differs by codec, as the table shows.
  • Motion and detail: A quiet documentary scene may tolerate lower bitrate than fast motion or detailed imagery in some encoding conditions, but YouTube’s recommendations do not define a motion-based discount. Test a representative section rather than guessing a reduction.

Set the encoder for a stable live feed

YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as ingest protocols and recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Its general encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. For audio, it recommends AAC or MP3. YouTube supports live streams up to 60 fps.

  • Bitrate mode: Set CBR and enter the recommended bitrate for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate.
  • Keyframes: Set the interval to two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Protocol: Choose RTMPS where your encoder offers it and your workflow supports it.
  • Audio: Use AAC or MP3 and verify that audio is present and synchronized in a test.
  • Latency: Choose it for the audience and use case, not as a bitrate control. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering; it matters less when viewers do not interact with the program.

In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and use its stream key in the encoder’s live destination settings. Treat the key as a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Use the stream’s preview and health messages to confirm that the intended feed reaches YouTube before you make it public.

Give the connection upload headroom

The stream’s total bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth. YouTube Help recommends leaving 20% of that bandwidth unused as room. This is YouTube’s general recommendation, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service or a special 24/7 formula. YouTube’s streaming tips also advise checking outbound upload capacity and accounting for other people sharing the network.

  1. Run an upload speed test under the conditions in which the stream will operate, including busy periods and other network use.
  2. Compare the sustained available upload capacity—not just a brief peak—to the stream’s total bitrate, leaving the recommended 20% headroom.
  3. If other live outputs use the same connection, include their combined bitrate in the calculation.
  4. Test the full playback-to-encoder-to-network chain for a representative period. Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages, and check for interruptions or bitrate instability.

A speed test is only a snapshot. Other household or workplace traffic, changes in the connection, and equipment or playback failures can still interrupt a continuous stream.

Test before leaving a 24/7 stream unattended

Use a test segment that resembles the actual program in both audio and motion. YouTube Help says to test before starting a live stream and to monitor stream health and review messages during the event. For continuous programming, also verify that the playback source repeats as intended, the encoder keeps sending, and the network remains stable over a representative run. These checks reduce avoidable faults; they do not establish or guarantee a particular uptime.

Copyright is a separate requirement from bitrate. Confirm that you have the rights needed to use every video and audio element in the program, and review YouTube’s applicable rules before streaming. A technically healthy feed does not establish permission to broadcast its contents.

Troubleshoot common bitrate and stream problems

  • Stream health reports a weak or unstable connection: Check actual outbound capacity and competing network use. Lower the resolution or frame rate and use the corresponding recommended bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the current setting with headroom.
  • The encoder bitrate fluctuates: Confirm CBR is selected and inspect whether the encoder is dropping frames or struggling to encode the source. Test representative footage and reduce the workload or output setting if needed.
  • The picture looks poor despite using the recommended rate: Verify that you selected the correct row for codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check the source quality and encoder output too; bitrate cannot restore detail absent from the original.
  • YouTube does not receive the feed: Verify the selected RTMP/RTMPS destination and stream key in the encoder, then check YouTube Studio’s preview and health messages. If you replace or reset a stream key, update the encoder with the current key.
  • Playback buffers for viewers: Lower latency may increase buffering, according to YouTube. Consider a less aggressive latency setting when interaction is unnecessary, and investigate viewer playback separately from the encoder’s ingest bitrate.
  • The stream stops during a long run: Check the playback source, encoder, connection, and YouTube stream health to identify where the chain failed. A 24/7 label does not remove the need to monitor the system or recover from interruptions.
