Test the complete audio and video flow before relying on a continuous YouTube stream.
Choose how visuals will match the music
First decide what “switch visuals between songs” should mean for your stream. The simplest dependable approach is to prepare a visual asset for each song and coordinate it with the playlist. For more reliable song-to-image timing, render each song and its visual into one complete audiovisual file, then sequence those files. That avoids depending on a separate graphic changing at exactly the right moment.

For a fixed sequence, an ordered playlist is easier to coordinate with song-specific visuals. Shuffling changes the order, so any separate visual arrangement must also handle that change; otherwise use pre-rendered audiovisual files or a visual approach that does not depend on song identity.
Confirm music rights and YouTube readiness
Before uploading files or going live, confirm that you have permission for every recording and the underlying musical work for the intended live online broadcast, relevant territories, any monetization, and an archived replay if you plan to keep one. YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions place responsibility for necessary rights on the creator, including music licensing rights. A consumer music subscription, purchased recording, or publicly viewable video does not by itself establish permission for this use.

India’s Copyright Act addresses communication to the public and separately recognizes broadcast reproduction rights. Those provisions make it important to check the actual rights chain and intended use; they do not establish whether a particular track or playlist is cleared. Confirm the scope with the relevant rights holders or qualified counsel.
YouTube may detect copyrighted material during a live stream. Its live Content ID matching guidance says a match can trigger a warning and, if it continues, replacement of the stream with a static image without sound or termination. Eligibility to use live matching is subject to conditions, including global rights and exclusive ownership for content submitted to that feature. A claim policy or an assumption that a song is licensed is not proof that your broadcast has the necessary rights.

Enable live streaming for the channel before the planned start. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Its encoder setup guide covers creating or scheduling a stream and obtaining the stream URL and key.
Build and configure the OBS playlist
- Prepare the files. Put the rights-cleared tracks or finished audiovisual files in the intended sequence. If you want a visual matched to each song, use a stable sequence or make each song and visual one pre-rendered file.
- Add a VLC Video source in OBS. In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video Source. OBS documents this source for playlist playback. VLC must be installed for the source to appear; on 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.
- Add playlist items and set playback behavior. Add the files in the order you want. Enable looping if the playlist should restart after the final item. Enable shuffle only if the order does not need to match a fixed visual sequence. Check the source’s playlist controls and observe a full transition between at least two items.
- Compose the scene. Add the background, song-associated artwork, or other visual elements needed for the chosen approach. If visuals are separate from the playlist, plan how their changes will follow track boundaries; do not assume VLC playlist progression will switch unrelated graphics automatically.
- Check audio routing and levels. Confirm that the VLC source’s audio is reaching the OBS stream mix, that it is not unintentionally doubled by another source, and that the beginning, end, and transitions of representative tracks sound as intended.
OBS’s documented playlist controls establish that media can advance, loop, and shuffle. They do not promise automatic per-song visual matching, audio-reactive effects, exact synchronization of separately controlled graphics, or uninterrupted 24/7 operation.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live and create or schedule a stream. Follow YouTube’s current encoder workflow to select the stream details and obtain the stream URL and stream key.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. Open Settings > Stream, select YouTube or the applicable custom server option, and enter the stream URL and key as required by the chosen connection method. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the stream.
- Set an encoder output your connection can sustain. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists a minimum bitrate of 5 Mbps and a recommended bitrate of 10 Mbps in its live encoder settings guidance. These are YouTube technical recommendations, not guarantees of stream success. Choose a setting your actual upload connection can sustain consistently.
- Wait for the preview and start the stream. Confirm the correct scene, moving visuals, and audible program audio in YouTube Studio’s preview before starting the broadcast.
Keep the stream key private. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS before the next broadcast.
Test transitions, then monitor the live output
Run a representative test before promoting the stream. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health and messages.

- Check that the first item starts correctly, the next song advances, and the final item loops to the start if looping is enabled.
- Watch whether each visual changes at the intended song boundary. If the order can shuffle, test more than one order.
- Listen for missing, doubled, clipped, or unexpectedly silent audio through a transition.
- Check the OBS output and YouTube preview/watch page for black frames, unintended overlays, or a frozen visual.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages while live, and test what you will do if the local computer, internet connection, encoder, or YouTube connection fails.
Neither the OBS playlist documentation nor YouTube’s encoder guidance promises that a particular setup will remain live indefinitely. A 24/7 plan therefore needs realistic monitoring and a recovery procedure, not just a looping playlist.
