You can play a gaming VOD stored in Google Drive during a YouTube livestream, but Drive alone cannot broadcast it. Make the video accessible to your computer, play it through an encoder such as OBS, and send the encoder’s output to a YouTube Live event using that event’s server URL and stream key. Test the audio and picture in YouTube’s preview before you go live, and stream only content you have rights to use.
What you need
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable livestreaming ahead of your event. YouTube streaming tips
- The VOD as a playable file on your computer, either downloaded or made available through Drive for desktop.
- An encoder, such as OBS, to play the VOD and send the video and audio to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the full stream. YouTube recommends testing upload bandwidth and allowing 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. YouTube live streaming tips
Make the Google Drive video accessible
A Drive share link is not a live feed. The encoder needs a video it can play reliably; it cannot simply send a Drive page to YouTube as a livestream.
Option 1: Download the VOD
- Open the video in Google Drive and choose Download.
- Save it somewhere easy to locate, then open it locally and check that it plays with sound.
- Use this local copy as the encoder’s playback source. It avoids depending on Drive connectivity during playback, but requires enough local storage for the file.
A file owner can disable downloading, copying, or printing for viewers and commenters. If Download is unavailable, ask the owner for an allowed copy or different access. Do not try to bypass the restriction. Google Drive: Download a file
Option 2: Use Drive for desktop
Drive for desktop can stream files that are primarily stored in the cloud, or mirror files so they are stored locally and available offline. Streaming saves local space but depends on Drive connectivity; mirroring keeps a local copy and uses local storage. Set up the YouTube livestream and encoder
- Create or select the live event. In YouTube Studio, open the livestream setup and create a new event or select the one you plan to use. Follow YouTube’s current encoder workflow for the event.
- Copy the destination details. YouTube provides a server URL and stream key for the encoder. The URL is the destination; the key is the credential that connects your encoder to the event. Treat the key as sensitive and do not share it publicly. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder
- Open OBS or another encoder. YouTube identifies OBS as an open-source encoder option. Add the accessible VOD as a playback source using the controls in your encoder, then configure the encoder’s streaming destination with the YouTube server URL and stream key.
- Check the output. Confirm that the encoder is sending the intended video and audio and that the event’s incoming preview shows both correctly. Source menus and media playback controls vary by encoder version and operating system; use the software’s current instructions for adding and controlling a media file.
- Start only after the preflight check. Verify the preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room, then start the public event when you are ready. YouTube recommends testing before the event and monitoring the stream while it runs. YouTube live streaming tips
- End in order. End the event in YouTube and stop the encoder after YouTube indicates that the event has stopped. YouTube live streaming tips
Check rights before broadcasting a gaming VOD
Having a VOD in Drive does not establish that you have permission to rebroadcast everything in it. Check the rights for gameplay footage, music, overlays, and any other third-party material. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; it may replace a stream with a placeholder and warn you to stop the content, and continued playback can interrupt or terminate the stream. For licensed third-party content, YouTube says the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube: Copyright issues with live streams
Troubleshoot common problems
