You can run a continuous Indian music broadcast by playing your cleared audio and video on a persistent Google Cloud Compute Engine virtual machine (VM), encoding the feed with FFmpeg or another compatible encoder, and sending it to YouTube Live with your channel’s stream URL and stream key. The VM keeps the encoder running when your own computer is off. Before you build it, clear the rights for every track and territory in your planned broadcast: YouTube can interrupt a live stream when it detects third-party material.
Choose the Google Cloud design that actually reaches YouTube
For a straightforward radio-style broadcast, use a Compute Engine VM as the computer that plays your playlist and runs the encoder. The encoder sends its output directly to the YouTube Live ingest endpoint using the server URL and stream key shown in your channel’s Live Control Room.
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a different service: it accepts an input stream and transcodes or packages it into outputs. It is not another name for YouTube ingest, and an API-generated HLS output does not automatically feed YouTube. If you choose the API, you must deliberately match the encoder’s output protocol to an input endpoint and configure a destination path that YouTube accepts.
| Option | What it does | What you operate | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compute Engine VM with software encoder | Runs the playlist or audio/video source and pushes an encoded feed to YouTube. | The VM, encoder process, recovery, stream key security, and monitoring. | Choose encoder settings and output compatible with YouTube’s ingest instructions. |
| Google Cloud Live Stream API | Accepts an encoder input and transcodes or packages output formats. | API configuration, credentials, input/output configuration, and channel lifecycle. | Its input protocols and session limits are distinct from YouTube’s ingest settings. |
For the API, Google documents RTMP_PUSH and SRT_PUSH input; it recommends SRT where possible, which requires a compatible encoder. YouTube documents RTMP-style URL-and-key setup and a separate HLS ingest option. HLS has specific playlist and segment requirements and higher latency than a continuous RTMP stream. Do not select an output protocol until you have confirmed that the exact endpoint accepts it.

Clear rights for the music before going live
Rights are a launch prerequisite, not a problem to resolve after YouTube flags the broadcast. YouTube’s livestream terms require the broadcaster to have all necessary worldwide exploitation rights for the live content, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. The applicable rights depend on the actual catalog, territories, and use; this guide cannot establish India-specific clearance steps for a particular track or rights holder.
- Identify every recording and composition in the playlist, and establish who controls the relevant rights for the intended territories and live use.
- Obtain permissions that cover the planned broadcast and any associated rights, rather than assuming that owning a file or having a consumer streaming subscription permits rebroadcast.
- Ask rights holders whether the YouTube channel must be allowlisted through Content ID. Licensed music may still be detected and interrupted if the rights holder has not allowed the channel.
- Do not assume a Creator Music license authorizes a continuous live radio stream. Confirm that the specific license covers this use.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A detected match can replace the picture, interrupt the stream, or terminate it. If the catalog or territorial permissions are unclear, resolve that with the relevant rights holders or qualified counsel before scheduling a continuous broadcast.

Prepare the YouTube channel and stream
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, follow the channel’s live-stream activation flow. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until the planned launch.
- Check channel restrictions. Confirm the channel is eligible to stream and has no restriction that prevents the planned broadcast.
- Create or schedule the event. Open Live Control Room and create or schedule the live stream. Copy the exact server URL and stream key supplied for that event or channel configuration.
- Keep the key private. Treat the stream key as a password: do not place it in public scripts, screenshots, or logs. Reset it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Read the current encoder guidance. Use settings supported by YouTube for your chosen ingest protocol and the source media. Do not copy a key, URL, or setting from another channel or an old tutorial.
Provision a Compute Engine VM and encoder
- Create or select a Google Cloud project. Set up billing for the project. Choose a VM region based on availability and your operational needs; Google Cloud’s Live Stream API quickstart lists
asia-south1as one supported region, but check current region and service availability when deploying. - Choose the VM for the workload. Select an operating system and VM size that can play the source and encode it continuously. The required capacity depends on the media and encoding work; the available documentation does not establish one universal VM size for an Indian music stream.
- Install a compatible encoder. Install FFmpeg or another encoder on the VM and prepare the playlist and any accompanying visual feed. Confirm the encoder can reach the selected ingest endpoint and that its output format matches YouTube’s current requirements.
- Keep credentials out of shared files. Restrict access to the VM and the stream key. Avoid putting the key into a publicly readable script or a file accessible to unrelated users.
- Only enable the Live Stream API if using it. The managed service requires its own project setup, billing, API enablement, credentials, and permissions. A VM that sends directly to YouTube does not need the API simply because both services are part of Google Cloud.
Configure and test the broadcast
Set the encoder’s source, output protocol, YouTube server URL, and stream key. Use an output profile supported by YouTube and appropriate for the actual source; the correct resolution, bitrate, and keyframe interval depend on YouTube’s current guidance and the media you are sending. The material available here does not establish a single bitrate or resolution that is correct for every stream, so verify those values in YouTube’s current encoder instructions rather than guessing.
- Start with a short test. Confirm the playlist advances as intended and that the encoder reports a live output without recurring errors.
- Check Live Control Room preview. Verify that YouTube receives both picture and sound, the audio is at a usable level, and the stream is not showing an unintended blank or frozen image.
- Check the viewer playback page. Confirm the event appears as expected to a viewer, including title and visibility settings.
- Check network capacity. YouTube recommends 20% spare upload bandwidth beyond the stream’s needs. Check the VM’s network path and leave this headroom rather than sizing for exactly the encoded bitrate.
- Test the actual playlist. Let it run long enough to catch broken files, abrupt volume changes, gaps, or unexpected transitions before relying on unattended operation.
Make a continuous stream recover from failures
A cloud VM avoids depending on a home computer staying on, but a VM alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast. The encoder process, VM, network path, and YouTube ingest can each fail. Arrange process supervision so the encoder can restart after an exit, monitor whether the stream is still reaching YouTube, and ensure someone can intervene when alerts indicate a persistent problem. Protect the key while arranging logs and alerts so they do not expose it.

If using the Google Cloud Live Stream API, account for its documented 24-hour running-session limit: a channel may need to be restarted after that interval. This is a managed API limit, not a general rule that every Compute Engine VM or every direct YouTube encoder session stops after 24 hours.
YouTube automatically archives live streams that are under 12 hours. Do not plan on one intact automatic archive for a continuous 24/7 broadcast; consider how you will preserve recordings and divide or schedule events if archives matter to you.

Estimate costs before leaving the stream on
There is no reliable universal Google Cloud cost for this design. Your total depends on VM type and region, hours running, storage, and network use. Estimate those components using Google Cloud’s current pricing tools for the specific deployment you intend to run. A continuous service uses compute for its operating hours, so calculate for the actual schedule rather than treating a short test as representative.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Google Cloud Live Stream API automatically send a stream to YouTube?
No. It accepts and processes an input stream; you must deliberately configure a compatible output and destination.
Can I use a song I bought or stream through a subscription?
Not on that basis alone. Those do not establish permission to rebroadcast the track in a continuous YouTube live stream.
