You can run both channels from one VPS by using Icecast to serve two separate mountpoints and Liquidsoap to feed each one from its own playlist. For example, publish Hindi audio at /hindi and Punjabi audio at /punjabi. Listeners open the corresponding URL, while you manage the playlists and outputs independently. The software can support this arrangement, but continuous service still depends on your VPS, network, monitoring and recovery setup.
How the two-stream setup works
Icecast is the server listeners connect to. Each distinct stream path on that server is a mountpoint, so one Icecast server can serve multiple broadcasts. Liquidsoap supplies the audio: it can read playlists and send feeds to Icecast. The Icecast Project describes mountpoints in its Basic Setup, and Liquidsoap’s Quickstart explains playlist sources, Icecast outputs and multiple feeds from one instance.
- Hindi channel: a Hindi playlist and Liquidsoap source feed an Icecast mountpoint such as
/hindi. - Punjabi channel: a separate Punjabi playlist and source feed a different mountpoint such as
/punjabi. - Listeners: connect to the VPS hostname or IP, Icecast port and the mountpoint path for the channel they want.
Keeping the sources, playlists and output settings separate lets you schedule and troubleshoot the channels independently while sharing the same server. Liquidsoap can also send multiple encoded outputs; its Icecast and Shoutcast output documentation is development documentation, so verify its syntax against the version installed on your VPS.
Plan the streams before configuring the VPS
Choose mountpoints and audio format
Use simple, distinct paths such as /hindi and /punjabi. Icecast’s basic setup advises avoiding spaces and unusual characters in mountpoint names; depending on the format and clients, a format-appropriate extension may be useful. Decide which codec and bitrate your listeners and playback devices can handle, then use compatible settings in each Liquidsoap output. The cited documentation does not prescribe a universal codec or bitrate for Hindi or Punjabi programming.

Separate the music libraries
Put each channel’s recordings in its own playlist or directory and configure a distinct playlist source for each. Check that every file is readable by the account running Liquidsoap and that playlist behavior at the end of a list is what you intend. A looping playlist can repeat its material, but repeating audio does not itself establish permission to broadcast it.
Estimate network capacity
Plan for the combined traffic from listeners on both mountpoints. A rough data estimate is the encoded bitrate multiplied by total listener time, converted from bits to bytes, with extra capacity allowed for protocol overhead. More concurrent listeners require more bandwidth, as Liquidsoap notes in its Quickstart. The cited documentation gives no VPS sizing benchmark, so actual capacity depends on the selected bitrates, listener concurrency and the VPS provider’s network limits.

Configure and launch both channels
- Install the software. Install Icecast and Liquidsoap using packages suitable for your VPS operating system. The cited documentation covers configuration concepts, not current installation commands for every distribution; follow the package and service instructions for your OS and installed versions.
- Set up Icecast. Configure its listening address and port, then replace the default source and administrator passwords before exposing the service to the public internet. Liquidsoap’s Quickstart warns that default credentials on a public server can permit unwanted source or administrator access.
- Prepare and check the playlists. Create distinct Hindi and Punjabi playlists, verify the file paths and permissions, and check the recordings’ audio formats. Keep the playlists separate so a change to one channel does not unintentionally change the other.
- Create two Liquidsoap sources and outputs. Configure one playlist source and one Icecast output for each channel. Set each output’s host, port, source credentials, encoding and unique mountpoint; use the same mountpoint names configured for the streams and avoid reusing a mountpoint between outputs. Liquidsoap’s Quickstart shows the general playlist-to-Icecast pattern, while the output documentation describes configuration options.
- Run the processes under a service manager. Configure the VPS to start Icecast and Liquidsoap appropriately after a restart, and decide how the service manager should restart a process that exits. Add monitoring so you can detect an unavailable source or stream; a process restart policy alone does not prove end-to-end uptime.
- Test from outside the VPS. Open each listener URL independently, confirm that the right language plays on each mountpoint, and check audio format and metadata. Test what listeners hear if a playlist ends or Liquidsoap disconnects, and verify recovery behavior before announcing continuous service.
For the listener URL, combine your VPS hostname or IP, Icecast port and mountpoint, for example http://your-vps-host:8000/hindi or http://your-vps-host:8000/punjabi. These are illustrative URL patterns, not configured addresses. Icecast also describes .m3u listener links for compatible players in its Basic Setup.
Keep the channels playing through failures
There are separate failure points: a Liquidsoap source can fail, a process can stop, the VPS or its network can become unavailable, or listeners may not be able to reach the server. Plan for each one rather than treating playlist looping as a complete uptime strategy.

- Source continuity: Liquidsoap documents using
mksafeto make a fallible source infallible. That can help with source continuity, but it does not restore a failed VPS or network connection. - Icecast fallback: Icecast supports a mount-specific fallback mount when a source stops, subject to a matching streaming format. See the Icecast Configuration File documentation for mount-specific settings.
- Process recovery: Use service-manager restart behavior and monitoring for Icecast and Liquidsoap, and test that a restart reconnects each output to its intended mountpoint.
- Host and network recovery: Decide how you will respond if the VPS itself or its network is unavailable. The cited software documentation does not promise VPS, network or end-to-end 24/7 uptime.
Icecast’s FAQ also discusses sources and concurrent distinct mountpoints. A fallback or second mountpoint is not a substitute for verifying what your listener clients can actually play.
Music rights still apply
Icecast and Liquidsoap only provide the technical means to distribute audio; they do not grant rights to the recordings. Before launch, confirm the permissions applicable to the recordings, their owners and repertoire, your operation and the territories where listeners may be located. Requirements can differ by territory, so check with the relevant rights holders or licensing bodies. This is general guidance, not legal advice.
