For a church worship stream, start with 1080p at 30 fps, H.264, CBR video, AAC stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz, and a keyframe every two seconds, sent to YouTube over RTMPS. A practical bandwidth-conscious video target is 10 Mbps; YouTube Help’s current H.264 guidance, checked in 2026, recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30. Choose a bitrate your church’s actual sustained upload connection can carry with headroom—or use 720p30 if it cannot.
There is no India-specific FFmpeg profile in YouTube’s guidance. The location matters operationally: measure the upload available where the stream will run, including the effects of shared network use. Encoder settings alone cannot guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast.
Recommended FFmpeg settings for church worship
This profile is for a file-based, 1080p30 SDR stream. It is a starting point, not a substitute for testing the church’s connection and source material.
| Setting | Starting point | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Ingest | RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMPS. Use the current ingest URL and stream key displayed in the channel’s Live Control Room. |
| Video codec | H.264 / AVC | A broadly accessible option listed in YouTube’s encoder guidance. YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1; use those only if the installed FFmpeg build and the channel’s ingest workflow support them. |
| Resolution and frame rate | 1920Ă—1080 at 30 fps | A practical balance for a fixed church camera. Keep the source aspect ratio; do not stretch a 16:9 image. |
| Rate control and video bitrate | CBR; 10 Mbps practical starting point | YouTube Help’s current H.264 1080p30 range is 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. The 10 Mbps target is a bandwidth-conscious compromise within that range, not YouTube’s H.264 recommendation. If upload capacity permits, use 14 Mbps to match that recommendation. |
| Keyframes / GOP | One every 2 seconds | At 30 fps, set a 60-frame GOP. YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds. |
| Audio | AAC stereo, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz | These match YouTube Help’s listed stereo guidance. Check the mixer feed during quiet sections as well as music. |
| SDR picture | Progressive, square pixels, Rec. 709, 8-bit | These are YouTube’s advanced SDR recommendations. Match the source rather than forcing an inappropriate format. |
| Network headroom | At least 20% above total stream bitrate | YouTube recommends a 20% margin. Count any backup stream and other demands on the same connection. |
YouTube Help describes RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP and recommends it for Live ingestion. Its network guidance warns that available upload bandwidth must exceed the stream’s total bitrate and that connectivity disruption can break a stream.

Choose bitrate and resolution for the actual connection
1080p30 H.264
YouTube Help’s current guidance, checked in 2026, lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for H.264 at 1080p30. The 10 Mbps example below can be a reasonable starting compromise for continuous service when bandwidth is a constraint, but it is below the published H.264 recommendation. If the real upload link can sustain the stream plus YouTube’s recommended 20% margin, set the video rate to 14 Mbps instead.
720p30 H.264
If 1080p cannot be sustained reliably, YouTube’s H.264 guidance for 720p30 is 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. Pick a rate within that range according to measured capacity; reduce resolution rather than holding an unstable higher-bitrate profile. A consistent lower-resolution stream is preferable to repeated drops.

Calculate the required upload capacity
Allow for audio, stream overhead, and other network use—not just the video bitrate. Applying YouTube’s 20% headroom guidance to a single 10 Mbps video target implies at least 12 Mbps of available outbound capacity before accounting for audio, protocol overhead, or unrelated use. Treat that as a floor for planning, not a guarantee. Measure at the actual streaming location and repeat when the network is under typical load.
FFmpeg command for a looping worship file
This template loops a local media file and sends its first video and audio streams to YouTube. Replace the file path, ingest URL, and stream key with the values for your setup. The example assumes an FFmpeg build with libx264 and RTMPS support, and media suitable for 1080p30 SDR. It is illustrative and has not been tested here.

-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'
For YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate at 1080p30, change each of the three 10M values to 14M, and confirm the connection can carry the higher rate with headroom. At 720p30, YouTube lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended; set -b:v and -maxrate to a sustainable value in that range and use a proportionate buffer.
The command assumes the input has both a video and an audio stream. If the file lacks audio, -map 0:a:0 will fail; remove that mapping and configure an appropriate audio source or a deliberate silent audio track. If a file’s frame rate or aspect ratio differs from the intended output, inspect and test the result rather than assuming that forcing -r 30 will improve it.

What the key options do
-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely;-rereads it at its native rate instead of sending it as fast as possible.-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0selects the first video and audio streams from the input.-c:v libx264selects H.264 encoding;-pix_fmt yuv420psets a widely compatible 8-bit pixel format.-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP at 30 fps, or two seconds.-keyint_min 60and-sc_threshold 0request a fixed keyframe cadence by avoiding shorter scene-cut intervals.-b:vsets the target video bitrate,-maxratelimits the rate, and-bufsizesets the rate-control buffer. Confirm exact option behavior against the installed FFmpeg build.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2encodes AAC stereo at the listed YouTube audio settings.-f flvselects the output format used for this RTMP-family ingest workflow; the URL must be the current RTMPS ingest address supplied by YouTube.
FFmpeg’s available encoders and option behavior depend on the installed release and build. Check ffmpeg -h encoder=libx264 and the local FFmpeg documentation before deployment.
Set up YouTube Live and test before worship
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube lists channel verification and no live-stream restriction within the preceding 90 days among its live-stream prerequisites. Confirm the channel can stream before scheduling a service.
- Get the current ingest details. In YouTube Studio, create or select the stream and copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for that channel. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a public repository, or leave it visible in shared logs.
- Measure the real outbound connection. Test from the computer and network that will run the stream. Include normal church internet use and any other stream in the calculation, then retain YouTube’s recommended 20% upload margin.
- Run a private or unlisted rehearsal. Use real camera movement and the actual worship audio mix. Check YouTube’s preview and stream health, picture framing, audio continuity, and whether quiet passages remain audible before going public.
- Plan for operational failure. Decide who will notice an interruption and how they will respond to power, internet, or encoder failure. YouTube advises monitoring because network disruption can break a stream; a single FFmpeg process is not a guarantee of indefinite connectivity.
- Keep a local recording if the archive matters. Do not rely on an indefinitely long live stream as the only copy of a complete service; the cited YouTube guidance does not guarantee complete platform archiving for such an event.
Copyright, worship recordings, and live-stream rules
Before broadcasting, confirm the church has the rights and permissions needed for every song, recording, video, and other material in the stream. Permission to perform or use a work in person does not by itself establish that the church may transmit it on YouTube. Check the rights that apply to the specific songs and recordings and the channel’s current YouTube notices or restrictions. The encoder settings in this guide do not determine copyright eligibility, and a successful technical test is not proof of permission.

Troubleshoot common FFmpeg and stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube never receives the stream | Incorrect or outdated ingest URL or stream key; channel not eligible; RTMPS unavailable in the installed build | Copy the current details from YouTube Studio, verify channel eligibility, and check the FFmpeg build’s protocol support. Do not expose the key when sharing logs. |
| Stream drops or reports poor connection | Insufficient sustained upload capacity, congestion, or a network interruption | Measure outbound capacity under typical load; check other users and streams; retain 20% headroom. Lower bitrate or resolution if the link cannot sustain the profile. |
| Video is missing or command exits on audio mapping | The input file has a different stream layout from the command’s assumptions | Inspect the media streams and adjust the -map options. The example requires at least one video and one audio stream. |
| Picture is stretched or framed incorrectly | Output dimensions or aspect ratio do not match the source | Preserve the source aspect ratio and check the YouTube preview. Avoid stretching a 16:9 camera image to fit a different frame. |
| Worship audio is silent, too low, or cuts out in quiet sections | Wrong input selection, a mixer-feed problem, or an audio issue not revealed by loud passages | Verify the selected audio stream and the board feed; rehearse with both music and quiet sections and monitor continuity. |
| Encoder option is rejected | The local FFmpeg version was built without the requested encoder or handles an option differently | Check ffmpeg -h encoder=libx264, the installed build’s protocol support, and its documentation; adapt the command to the options actually available. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a separate FFmpeg profile for churches in India?
No India-specific profile is established in YouTube’s cited encoder guidance; use the codec and resolution guidance above and measure the connection at the streaming location.
Does this command automatically recover after an internet outage?
No. A looping input repeats the file, but the command by itself does not guarantee that an interrupted connection will reconnect or that the stream will continue indefinitely.
