This guide covers the setup, stream key, practical testing, copyright permission, and the limits of a continuous broadcast.
Before you start: check channel access and music rights
Enable YouTube Live
Check that your channel is eligible for live streaming and enable it in YouTube Studio. For a channel’s first activation, YouTube says the process may take up to 24 hours. Wait until the feature is available before planning a launch. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance describes software encoders such as OBS as one way to send a broadcast.
Get permission for the music
Being able to play a song, buying a track, or finding it labeled “free” does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast it. Confirm that your rights cover the actual use: a live YouTube broadcast, the territories where it will be available, and any archive or later viewing. Keep license records and check attribution or monetization conditions.
YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the broadcaster: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Read YouTube’s livestream terms.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can lead to a placeholder, interruption, or termination. If you have licensed music, ask the rights holder or distributor to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist before broadcasting; a license alone may not prevent a live interruption if the channel has not been allowlisted. Archived streams can also receive claims after the broadcast ends. YouTube explains live-stream content matching.
Choose a suitable catalog
YouTube recommends its Audio Library and advises checking third-party licenses for how and where music may be used. That library may not meet the needs of a Telugu-music channel. Other options include music you composed and recorded yourself, a commissioned original soundtrack, or a catalog whose license explicitly covers your broadcast and archive plans. Verify the terms with the rights holder; “royalty-free” is not a substitute for checking the license.

Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube Live
- Install OBS Studio. Get the software from the official OBS Project site. Plan a scene around your intended visual and audio sources. Use music and visuals you have the right to broadcast.
- Create a stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room, then create a stream or schedule one. YouTube’s setup instructions cover creating the broadcast and obtaining its connection details: YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the stream URL and key into OBS. In OBS, open the stream settings and enter the server URL and stream key supplied by YouTube. The key is a credential: do not publish it, show it on screen, or send it to anyone who does not need it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Choose output settings for your actual connection. Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to suit the intended stream and your available upload capacity. YouTube recommends RTMPS. There is no universal bitrate or computer specification that suits every resolution, frame rate, encoder, and connection, so consult YouTube’s encoder settings and live-streaming recommendations rather than guessing.
- Test representative content. Send a test with audio and visual movement similar to the planned broadcast. Check the YouTube preview and stream-health messages before promoting the event or leaving the setup unattended. A test can reveal connection or encoding problems, but it does not establish that you have music rights.
- Start the broadcast. Start streaming from OBS and complete any required “Go live” action in the Live Control Room. If you scheduled the event, YouTube can show it as upcoming and let viewers choose “Notify me”; scheduling does not keep OBS or the computer running.
OBS is the software-encoder route: the computer must run the encoder and provide the feed. YouTube also recognizes standalone hardware encoders, but the right choice depends on the production workload. The available guidance does not establish a minimum PC specification or a particular OBS media-loop workflow. Check the current OBS documentation for exact source and looping controls before relying on a playlist unattended.
Plan for continuity, archives, and recovery
A 24/7 broadcast is not the same as a saved 24-hour video
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a complete archive matters, plan shorter sessions and keep a local recording backup. YouTube also warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Know what has to remain available
For an OBS-based always-on stream, the encoder computer, power, internet upload, and playback sources all need to keep working. A wired network connection, backup internet, UPS, or remote hosting may address a particular reliability concern, but none is a universal requirement or a guarantee of uninterrupted service. Decide what interruption you can tolerate and test recovery before relying on the stream.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- You cannot start a live stream: confirm that live streaming is enabled for the channel and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation to complete.
- YouTube does not receive the OBS feed: check that OBS has the current stream URL and key, that the stream is started in OBS, and that the Live Control Room has any required go-live action completed. Reset and replace the key if it may have been exposed.
- The preview or stream health indicates trouble: verify the selected resolution, frame rate, and bitrate against your upload capacity; review YouTube’s encoder recommendations and run another representative test.
- The live stream is interrupted after music begins: a Content ID match may be involved. Confirm broadcast rights and ask the rights holder or distributor to allowlist your channel through Content ID before trying again.
- The stream ends or the archive is incomplete: check whether the computer, power, internet, or playback source failed. Even if the stream remained live, a session exceeding 12 hours may not be archived, so use shorter sessions when the full recording matters and retain a local backup.
Cost and equipment choices
OBS is software, but using it continuously means keeping a suitable computer and its internet connection available. A mini PC may suit a fixed, modest production; no particular model, minimum CPU/GPU, or continuous-duty rating is established here. Match the machine to resolution, frame rate, encoder choice, cooling, and reliability needs. A standalone hardware encoder is another option if you prefer a dedicated device, but its suitability and price depend on the model and workload.

For a DIY setup, account for the equipment and connection you already have, plus any optional reliability measures you decide your situation needs. Do not assume a hardware purchase is necessary before testing the actual workload.
