To keep recorded sermons live on YouTube around the clock, create or schedule a YouTube Live stream in YouTube Studio, then send it a repeating video or playlist from an encoder. A church can use local software such as OBS, a dedicated hardware encoder, or cloud playout. The choice determines what must stay powered, who manages playback and recovery, and how the church handles a replay archive.
Before you begin
- Confirm live-stream access early. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours. Check the church channel’s eligibility and activation before launch day; its status cannot be assumed.
- Gather the programme files. Decide which sermon recordings will play and in what order. Check that each file plays correctly, that speech is audible, and that transitions do not leave unintended silence.
- Confirm rights for every item. Make sure the church controls or has permission to broadcast each sermon recording, worship song, image, and other included material. The equipment and service information cited here does not establish what rights a particular church holds or whether a particular licence covers a specific use.
- Choose who will operate the stream. A local setup needs a computer and someone responsible for playback and monitoring; hardware and cloud approaches shift some of that operational work but have their own costs and terms.
Choose how to play the recordings
YouTube Live receives a feed from an encoder. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists software and standalone hardware options, and identifies Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams. Its listed encoders are third-party products, not products made by YouTube, and a listing is not an endorsement.
| Route | What is established | What the church needs to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Local software encoder | OBS describes itself as free, open-source recording and streaming software for Windows, Mac, and Linux; YouTube lists it among encoder options. | A computer must remain available, along with power and internet. The church must configure video playback and repetition, monitor the feed, and plan for interruptions. OBS’s homepage does not document a complete unattended playlist recipe. |
| Dedicated hardware encoder | YouTube lists the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone YouTube Live encoder. Its listing describes scheduled prerecorded-media playback without a computer. | Check current availability, compatibility, supported media workflow, device cost, and how the church will monitor it remotely. A vendor listing is not independent reliability testing. |
| Cloud playout | A cloud service can play uploaded video or a playlist and send the feed to YouTube. StreamNeo describes upload, stream-key setup, cloud playback, and automatic reconnect attempts. | Consider recurring cost, service terms, storage limits, upload bandwidth, support, and whether the church is comfortable storing media and stream credentials with a provider. Service feature statements are vendor-published, not independently tested here. |
For a do-it-yourself route, OBS avoids a separate encoder purchase, but it leaves playback, power, internet continuity, and recovery with the church. YouTube also lists hardware and cloud options; select one only after checking its current workflow and terms.
Create the YouTube Live stream
- Verify channel activation. Sign in to the church’s YouTube account and check whether live streaming is enabled. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation, according to YouTube Help.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a stream for an immediate broadcast, or schedule one in advance. Scheduling provides a shareable stream URL and lets viewers set reminders.
- Copy the stream details into the encoder. In the encoder’s stream settings, enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. Treat the key as a password: share it only with the people or system that need it, and do not publish it.
- Start the encoder feed and check the preview. Wait for the feed to appear in the Live Control Room. For a scheduled broadcast, YouTube says to click Go live there after the encoder feed arrives.
- Confirm the public viewing page. Open the scheduled or live stream as a viewer would and check that the picture and sound are present and that the intended stream is being shown.
Set up a local OBS broadcast
OBS is the software route for a church that is prepared to leave a computer running and maintain the broadcast locally. YouTube’s encoder guidance identifies OBS as an option, but the reviewed OBS homepage does not provide a complete unattended sermon-playlist setup. The church therefore needs to configure and test its chosen playback and repetition workflow rather than assume a playlist will loop by default.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Install OBS on the church computer and prepare the sermon files or playlist using a playback method the operator can verify.
- In OBS, configure the stream connection with the YouTube stream URL and key from the Live Control Room. Keep the key private and restrict access to the computer and account.
- Arrange the sermon order and repetition, then test a full pass through the material, including transitions and audio. Confirm the OBS output appears in YouTube’s preview before making the broadcast public.
- Leave the computer, OBS, network connection, and power available for the entire period the stream is meant to run. Assign someone to check the feed and respond if it stops.
These steps describe the connection and operational requirements, not a single OBS playlist plugin or configuration. Playback tools and OBS interfaces can change; verify the exact method selected on the church’s installed version before relying on it unattended.
Test the programme and plan for interruptions
Do a complete test before depending on the stream for church communications. Check sermon order, transitions, audio presence and level, the YouTube preview, and the person responsible for responding to a dropped feed. Decide who can access the stream key and who will restart or replace the encoder feed if needed. These are operational checks for the church; they are not reported test results for any particular equipment.

Interruption handling depends on the chosen route. A local OBS setup requires someone to address the computer, software, power, or connection problem. For hardware, confirm what remote monitoring and recovery options the device supports. For cloud services, review what reconnect behavior is offered and what the church must do when a failure needs intervention; do not treat a product description as a guarantee that every interruption will be resolved.
Plan the replay separately
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume one longer nonstop session will create a complete replay. If a complete archive matters, retain the source recordings and plan separate, shorter broadcasts or another recording workflow; verify the resulting archive after each stream.

Troubleshooting common problems
- Live streaming is not available on the channel: Check eligibility and activation in YouTube Studio. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so resolve it before the planned launch.
- The Live Control Room has no encoder preview: Check that the encoder has the correct stream URL and key for the selected broadcast, that it is sending a feed, and that the key has not been replaced or mistyped.
- The preview appears, but the scheduled broadcast has not started: YouTube says to click Go live in the Live Control Room after the encoder feed arrives for a scheduled stream.
- The stream stops when the church computer is turned off: A local software encoder depends on the computer remaining available. Keep it powered and connected, or choose a hardware or cloud route that fits the church’s operational needs.
- The playlist ends instead of repeating: Verify the selected playback method’s repetition settings and test beyond one complete playlist cycle before relying on it unattended.
- The feed drops and does not return: Check power, internet, encoder status, and the active stream key. Follow the church’s assigned response plan; cloud-service reconnect claims should be checked against the provider’s current terms and do not replace monitoring.
- A long broadcast has no complete replay: YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. Retain source files and use a separate replay plan when the full archive matters.
