For that, use an external supervisor or scheduled launcher to reopen OBS and, if you want it to go live immediately, add OBS’s --startstreaming launch parameter. Test the whole recovery path before relying on it for a podcast broadcast.
First determine what stopped: OBS or the stream connection
If OBS is still open but the stream has disconnected, use OBS’s built-in automatic reconnect and investigate the connection to the streaming server. If OBS has exited, automatic reconnect cannot help: it runs inside OBS and disappears when the application closes. Set up recovery for a disconnected stream
Enable OBS automatic reconnect
In OBS, open Settings > Advanced and find the Network section. Enable Automatically Reconnect. The exact additional retry controls shown can depend on the OBS version; choose a retry delay and retry limit appropriate to your stream rather than assuming reconnect will resolve every outage. This setting is for a lost connection while OBS remains running, not an application crash. OBS Studio Overview Guide
Investigate the connection if reconnect keeps failing
OBS’s troubleshooting guidance treats dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server may be unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. Try a different ingest server where the platform offers one, or lower the bitrate and check whether the network path is stable. Restart OBS after the application crashes
Crash recovery needs two separate actions: an external supervisor starts OBS after its process exits, and OBS’s launch parameter can tell the newly opened application to begin streaming. OBS documents launch parameters and their use with scheduled or other automated launches, but it does not provide one universal, cross-platform watchdog recipe. Your operating system and automation tool determine how to detect the exit, configure retries, and launch in the correct user session. OBS Launch Parameters
1. Prepare OBS to reopen the right production
Before automating anything, save the intended profile, scene collection, and scene in OBS. Launch parameters can select a profile, scene collection, and scene, which helps prevent recovery from opening the wrong production setup. Use the names and syntax documented in the OBS launch-parameters guide. OBS Launch Parameters
2. Configure an external supervisor or scheduled launcher
Use an operating-system task scheduler or process supervisor that runs outside OBS. Configure it to start OBS when the OBS process is no longer running, then point it at the OBS executable. Set the launcher’s working directory to the folder containing that executable; OBS specifically calls out the working directory for scheduled and other automated launches. The exact configuration screens and process-detection options differ by operating system, so use that system’s documentation for the scheduler or supervisor you choose. OBS Launch Parameters

3. Choose whether OBS should go live immediately
To have OBS start streaming as it launches, pass --startstreaming to the OBS executable. This asks OBS to start its output; it does not confirm that the destination accepted the stream or that the podcast is safe to broadcast. If a person must verify the microphone, scene, recording, or destination first, omit the parameter and have an operator start the stream after checking those items. OBS Launch Parameters

- Use a short delay before relaunching and bounded retries so one fault does not create a rapid restart loop. These are implementation safeguards, not a universal retry design specified by OBS.
- Log each detection and launch attempt so you can distinguish a crash from a failed restart.
- Prevent duplicate OBS instances, and verify how your scheduler behaves if OBS is still shutting down when the next launch is due.
- Confirm whether the host operating system can launch OBS in the required interactive user session, especially after reboot or while the desktop is locked. The OBS launch guide does not establish a cross-platform answer for unattended or service-session launches.
- Before depending on the setup, deliberately test the recovery path and check the receiving platform to confirm that the stream actually returned.
Using OBS WebSocket as part of a monitor
OBS WebSocket can help an external tool control OBS and observe output-state events, including stopped, reconnecting, and reconnected states. It is not a process supervisor: if OBS is no longer running, its WebSocket endpoint cannot relaunch it. WebSocket is included by default beginning with OBS Studio 28.0.0. If you enable remote control, protect it with authentication and a password. The OBS Project’s obs-websocket README says: “It is highly recommended to keep obs-websocket protected with a password against unauthorized control.” Do not expose an unauthenticated control interface to untrusted networks.

Common recovery problems
OBS reconnects, then drops again
This is more likely a continuing connection or ingest problem than a need to restart the OBS process. Check the network path, try another available server, or reduce bitrate in line with OBS’s connection troubleshooting advice. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting
The scheduled task runs but OBS does not open correctly
Check the executable path and set the task’s working directory to the folder containing OBS. Then verify that the task launches in the intended user session and can access the graphics hardware and production files. The launch guide identifies working-directory configuration for automated launches; session and GPU behavior must be checked for the particular operating system and task configuration. OBS opens but does not start streaming
Check that the launcher passed --startstreaming to the OBS executable and that the correct profile, scene collection, scene, and stream destination are selected. OBS keeps launching repeatedly
A restart loop suggests OBS is closing again or the supervisor is treating a normal exit as a crash. Add bounded retries and a delay, inspect the logs, and avoid automatic go-live until the underlying cause is understood.
A note on version-specific reports
An OBS forum post dated June 26, 2026 reports a crash involving OBS Studio 32.1.2 on Windows 11 when using SRT output with Stream Delay enabled and network recovery occurring before the first automatic reconnect attempt. This is a report under those specific conditions, not an established general defect or a confirmed fix. OBS forum report
