For most churches, the simplest way to put a recorded sermon on YouTube from a Mac mini is to upload the video in YouTube Studio, then publish it immediately or schedule it. Choose a Premiere if the congregation should watch together at a set time. Use a live encoder only if the sermon must appear as a live broadcast with a live event page and chat; that is a different, more hands-on workflow.
Choose how the sermon should appear on YouTube
| Route | Best for | What viewers experience | Technical work |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upload and publish or schedule | A finished sermon people can watch when convenient, or at a scheduled release time | A regular video on the channel. A scheduled video stays private until its publication time. | Lowest: upload the file in YouTube Studio; no encoder is needed. |
| Premiere | A congregation gathering at one announced time | A public watch page before playback, with a shareable link, reminders, and chat. After playback, the video remains a regular upload. | Upload and schedule the file, then select the Premiere option. No encoder is needed. |
| Live encoder | A replay that must appear as a live broadcast, with an event watch page and live chat | A live stream rather than an ordinary scheduled video or Premiere. | More involved: create the live event, connect an encoder with its stream URL and key, test, and monitor it. |
If the goal is simply to make the recorded sermon available on Sunday, use a scheduled upload. A Premiere is useful when a shared start time and advance watch page matter. Reserve live encoding for a genuine live-broadcast presentation of the recording.
Prepare the sermon video on the Mac mini
Check the file
- Use a video file containing the sermon image and sound. An audio-only file cannot be uploaded as a video; if you have only audio, pair it with an image and export a video file first.
- YouTube’s published upload recommendations include an MP4 container, H.264 video, AAC-LC or Opus audio, and the same frame rate as the original recording. YouTube states: “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.”
- Those detailed encoding settings are labeled for Studio Content Manager partners. They can help when preparing or troubleshooting a file, but ordinary church uploaders do not need to treat every parameter as a mandatory re-encoding requirement. For a compatible finished file, upload it and let YouTube process it.
- Before publishing, confirm the church has permission for any music, images, or other material included in the recording.
Bitrate guidance when encoding is necessary
If a volunteer is exporting or troubleshooting a 1080p SDR file, YouTube’s recommended upload bitrate is 8 Mbps at 24, 25, or 30 fps, or 12 Mbps at 48, 50, or 60 fps. These are recommendations, not a requirement to re-encode a file that is already ready to upload.
Upload and publish or schedule the sermon
- On the Mac mini, sign in to the church’s YouTube account and open YouTube Studio.
- Select Create → Upload videos, then choose the sermon video file.
- Enter the title and other video details. Complete the audience and any other required account prompts.
- On the Visibility step, choose the intended release: Public to make it available after processing, Unlisted to share it with people who have the link, or Private to restrict access.
- To release it later, choose Schedule, set the date, time, and time zone, review the settings, then save. The video stays private until its scheduled publication time.
- Check the selected time zone before saving. YouTube notes that the “Published on” date shown on a watch page is based on Pacific Standard Time, so that displayed date can differ from the date in Studio for a video scheduled in a time zone ahead of PST.
A Community Guidelines strike can prevent scheduled publication during a penalty period. If the sermon does not go public as planned, check the channel’s status and reschedule after the restriction ends.

Schedule a Premiere for a shared viewing time
- Upload the sermon video in YouTube Studio and complete its details.
- In the scheduling flow, choose the event time and select Set as Premiere.
- Review and save the schedule. YouTube creates a public watch page in advance; share that link so viewers can set a reminder or join the chat.
- At the scheduled time, viewers watch the video together. After the Premiere, it remains on the channel as a regular video.
A Premiere is not a live encoder broadcast. YouTube’s current help says Premières do not support Shorts or output above 1080p. A Community Guidelines strike may also prevent publication during a penalty period.
Use a live encoder only for a live-style rebroadcast
For this route, YouTube receives a live feed from an encoder playing the prerecorded sermon. It is not necessary for an ordinary upload or Premiere. YouTube’s encoder directory lists OBS as open-source software available at no charge, and lists Gyre as a cloud service for continuous prerecorded-video streams; these are options to investigate, not endorsements or assurances about suitability for a particular church channel.

- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and open the Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key for that event into the encoder’s YouTube connection settings. Treat the stream key as private: it allows the encoder to connect to the channel.
- Choose the sermon file in the encoder and configure it to send the video and audio feed to YouTube. Confirm the event is set up for the intended time and audience.
- Test ahead of the service. Preview the event in Live Control Room and check stream health, access, and audio and video quality before relying on it.
- Start the encoder feed and monitor the event while it is live. Keep the Mac mini and its network connection available for the duration if the encoder is running locally.
Encoder settings and testing
YouTube’s live encoder guidance covers supported settings, bitrates, and resolutions. The specific stream settings depend on the video and connection, so check the current Live Control Room guidance rather than assuming that the upload bitrate recommendations above apply to a live feed. Set up well in advance, preview the incoming stream, and verify that viewers can access the event and hear and see it correctly.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The video is not public at the expected time: Check its visibility and scheduled time in Studio, including the selected time zone. Also check whether a Community Guidelines penalty is preventing scheduled publication.
- The file will not upload or process as expected: Confirm that it is a video file rather than audio alone. Check compatibility; YouTube’s recommendations include MP4, H.264, AAC-LC or Opus, and retaining the recording’s frame rate. Do not assume every detailed Content Manager encoding parameter is mandatory for a regular uploader.
- The congregation cannot open the video: Verify whether it was set to Private, Unlisted, or Public. Private restricts access; Unlisted is available to people with the link; Public is available on the channel.
- The live event does not receive the encoder feed: Recheck that the encoder is using the stream URL and stream key for the intended event, and inspect the preview and stream-health status in Live Control Room. Do not share the key publicly.
- The live preview has missing or poor audio/video: Test before the event, check the encoder’s outgoing audio and video, and verify stream health and playback in the preview rather than waiting for the service to begin.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a prerecorded sermon looping as a YouTube live stream without leaving the Mac mini running, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload the recording, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; a slot streams the uploaded file at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not a camera-based live service. Start the free day.
