If your YouTube live stream freezes while using OBS on a low-end PC, first find out whether OBS reports rendering lag, encoding lag, or dropped frames. Those point to different problems: reduce GPU and encoding work for the first two; investigate upload stability and bitrate for dropped frames or viewer buffering. There is no single setting that works for every PC, so make one change at a time and test.
Why does a YouTube live stream freeze on a low-end PC?
“Freezing” describes what you see, not the cause. OBS may be struggling to render a scene, encode its video, or send the stream over the network. Alternatively, OBS may be sending normally while a viewer’s connection buffers. A game that still feels smooth does not rule out an OBS bottleneck: OBS also needs GPU resources to composite and render the scene.
OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guidance explains that scene compositing and rendering use GPU time. Its Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guidance treats dropped frames and buffering as separate symptoms. Check OBS’s Stats window during a short test and save the OBS log so you can identify which symptom is occurring.

These are useful diagnostic directions, not a diagnosis of an individual PC. Location in India alone does not identify the cause or establish a bitrate. OBS says system capability depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; its System Requirements page cautions that compatibility by itself does not guarantee streaming performance.

How to reduce OBS rendering and encoding load
Change one setting at a time, then repeat a short, low-risk test. This helps show which adjustment mattered and avoids reducing quality more than necessary.
1. Check OBS Stats and save a log
- Start a short test stream or recording using the scene and workload that normally trigger the freeze.
- Open OBS’s Stats window and note whether it shows rendering lag, encoding lag, or dropped frames.
- Save the OBS log for that session. If you need help diagnosing the PC, include the log and the machine’s CPU, GPU or integrated GPU, OBS version, output resolution and frame rate, encoder, and a sustained upload result.
2. Free GPU resources if rendering is lagging
- Lower demanding game graphics settings and cap the game’s frame rate to the display refresh rate, or enable V-Sync. An uncapped game can use GPU capacity OBS needs, even if the game appears responsive.
- Close programs you know are using substantial GPU resources, particularly ones you opened for the session.
- Simplify the OBS scene: remove sources you do not need, disable unnecessary filters, and reduce browser sources. These changes can lower scene-rendering work without changing the game itself.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. OBS recommends this as a way to let Windows reserve GPU capacity for OBS.
3. Lower output resolution or frame rate
In OBS, open Settings > Video and reduce the output resolution, the frame rate, or both. If 60 fps is unstable, OBS’s troubleshooting guidance suggests trying 30 fps. Test the result with the content you plan to stream; a lower frame rate or resolution reduces workload but also changes what viewers see.

Reducing the base canvas resolution is more disruptive because it affects the scene layout. OBS recommends considering it when GPU resources are severely constrained, rather than making it the first adjustment.
4. Try a compatible hardware encoder
Open Settings > Output and check the encoder options available on this PC. OBS generally recommends hardware encoding when compatible because the work can move from the CPU to a dedicated component in the GPU or processor. Options such as NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync depend on the actual hardware and drivers; do not assume a low-end PC supports a particular encoder.

Hardware encoding is not automatically the best-looking choice for every machine. Encoder generation and compatibility matter, and early hardware encoder generations can produce lower quality than x264 at the same bitrate. Compare the options your PC actually offers with a test stream rather than choosing by name alone. The OBS Hardware Encoding guide describes these compatibility considerations.
5. Test before the intended live session
After each change, repeat a short test with the same scene and workload. OBS’s Overview Guide recommends testing before streaming. A private or unlisted test, where available for your setup, is a lower-risk way to check that the picture and audio remain stable before a public broadcast.

If OBS shows dropped frames or viewers see buffering
Do not treat a network symptom as proof that the CPU needs an upgrade. Check sustained upload stability and compare the stream bitrate with YouTube’s current recommendations for your selected stream settings. OBS notes that an appropriate bitrate depends on both upload speed and the streaming service; a lower bitrate can also suit viewers with less bandwidth. The materials cited here do not establish a current YouTube bitrate limit, so use YouTube’s current guidance rather than a universal number.
If upload stability is poor, test at a bitrate the connection can sustain and observe whether dropped frames or buffering improve. If OBS instead reports rendering or encoding lag, continue addressing GPU or encoder workload; lowering the network bitrate alone may not fix those problems.

What to avoid when troubleshooting
- Do not copy a bitrate, encoder preset, or resolution as a universal fix. The right settings depend on the PC, workload, upload, and YouTube’s current guidance.
- Do not buy a GPU, capture card, or optimization utility before the OBS Stats and log point to a problem that purchase would solve.
- Do not change several settings at once. You will have a harder time identifying what improved or worsened stability.
