Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to play compatible prerecorded podcast files in sequence, then send the combined input to YouTube Live with an FFmpeg streaming command. The concat file itself is not an infinite loop or a reliability mechanism: you must handle playlist exhaustion, verify compatibility and durations, and monitor the encoder and network connection.
What an FFmpeg concat file does—and does not do
A concat file is a plain-text playlist read by FFmpeg’s concat demuxer. FFmpeg presents the listed files as one virtual input, adjusting timestamps so the first starts at zero and each subsequent file begins when the previous one ends. It is not a YouTube playlist or a streaming service.
The demuxer is designed to join files at the packet level without re-encoding when their streams are compatible. It does not, by itself, repeat the playlist forever, reconnect after every failure, or ensure uninterrupted delivery to YouTube. Those depend on your input files, FFmpeg command, network, encoder process and YouTube Live configuration.
Prepare compatible podcast files
For the concat demuxer, files must have the same streams, including matching codecs and time bases. In practical terms, check that each segment has the same expected audio and video streams and compatible encoding parameters. The FFmpeg documentation states: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” See the FFmpeg documentation on the concat demuxer.

Duration accuracy matters. If a file’s duration is read incorrectly, or the file is truncated, FFmpeg may place the next file’s timestamps incorrectly, causing gaps, overlaps or other artifacts. You can supply an explicit duration directive when the duration needs correcting, but verify it against the actual media rather than guessing.

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'episode-01.mp4'
file 'episode-02.mp4'
- Put
ffconcat version 1.0on the very first line. It must have no leading spaces and no byte-order mark so FFmpeg can recognize the format automatically. - Add one
filedirective per line, in the order you want the segments played. - Use paths relative to the playlist when possible. In the default safe mode, paths must be relative and use the portable character set; unsafe paths and directives are rejected.
- If a duration must be overridden, put a
durationdirective after that file’sfileline, using the verified duration.
Paths containing spaces or special characters require the escaping or quoting syntax documented by FFmpeg. Consult the concat demuxer documentation rather than assuming shell quoting rules also apply to the playlist.
The demuxer’s safe option defaults to 1. Do not switch to -safe 0 as a routine workaround: it allows arbitrary filenames and should only be used when you trust the playlist and understand why the restriction must be relaxed.

Choose the right kind of concatenation
| Method | Use it when | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer | Inputs are compatible and can be joined at the packet level without re-encoding. | Matching streams, codecs and time bases are required; duration errors can affect timestamps. |
| Concat filter | You need to re-encode, normalize or otherwise process the inputs as part of joining them. | Use the filter-based workflow described by FFmpeg for cases that need re-encoding. |
| Concat protocol | The container format supports file-level concatenation. | It joins at the file level and is not a general replacement for the demuxer or filter. |
The word “concat” can refer to these distinct FFmpeg mechanisms. Choose based on whether re-encoding or normalization is needed, whether input streams and timestamps are compatible, and whether the container supports file-level joining. FFmpeg’s FAQ on concatenating media distinguishes the demuxer from the filter and protocol.
Send the playlist to YouTube Live
The playlist is an FFmpeg input; your streaming command must also encode or otherwise provide a YouTube-compatible output and publish it to the stream destination using your YouTube stream key. No complete command or universal codec, container or command-line settings are established here, so do not copy an unverified command as if it were appropriate for every set of files and FFmpeg build. Configure the output for the actual input and the encoder settings you select in YouTube Live Control Room.

- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the live stream and retrieve its stream key and ingest destination. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or include it in a publicly visible command or log.
- Configure FFmpeg to read the concat playlist and produce a stream using the codec, resolution and frame rate selected for the YouTube ingest. If the inputs cannot be joined compatibly, use a workflow that re-encodes, such as the concat filter.
- Set a constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval where supported by your chosen encoder configuration. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators before relying on the feed.
- Test the complete path—including playlist transitions, audio, video, upload capacity and any backup encoder—before the intended broadcast.
Set YouTube encoder parameters to match the stream
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video options, with frame rates up to 60 fps. The correct bitrate depends on codec, resolution and frame rate; use the relevant row in YouTube’s settings rather than treating one number as universal. Its H.264 recommendations include:
| H.264 configuration | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations for the listed H.264 configurations, not measurements of your connection or guarantees of stream health. For example, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30; that figure does not automatically apply to another resolution, frame rate or codec. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the configuration you actually use.

YouTube recommends keeping 20% bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. Test available upload bandwidth under realistic conditions, then preview and monitor stream health. YouTube’s streaming tips also advise testing before the event, checking local archive integrity and testing encoder failover if a backup encoder is part of your setup. These steps reduce avoidable risk but cannot guarantee uninterrupted delivery.
Make playback repeat—and plan for failures
A finite concat list plays through its entries; it does not loop automatically merely because it is a concat file. For a nonstop schedule, arrange for FFmpeg to start another pass when the list ends, or use a playback workflow designed to repeat the material. Test the transition back to the beginning and confirm that timestamps, audio and video remain correct. The cited FFmpeg and YouTube guidance does not establish a particular universal looping command or an uptime rate for concat-file streams.
Keep the computer running while using a local FFmpeg encoder, maintain a stable upload connection, and monitor the process and YouTube stream health. A local encoder can stop because of a process, device, power or network failure; the playlist alone cannot recover from those conditions. If you need a backup encoder, test its failover in advance rather than assuming it will take over cleanly.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg rejects a path or playlist directive | The entry violates safe-mode path rules, or the filename needs escaping. | Use relative paths with portable characters, check quoting against FFmpeg’s concat syntax, and only relax safe mode for a trusted playlist when necessary. |
| Distorted transition, gap or timestamp problem | Files have mismatched stream layouts or time bases, or a file’s duration is inaccurate or truncated. | Check stream compatibility and file integrity; correct a duration only with a verified value, or use a re-encoding workflow if normalization is needed. |
| Playback stops at the end of the list | The playlist contains a finite sequence and no repeat behavior is configured. | Configure and test a repeat workflow, including the transition from the last segment to the first. |
| YouTube preview is unstable or stream health degrades | Bitrate or keyframe settings may not match the selected ingest, or available upload capacity may be insufficient or inconsistent. | Match codec, resolution and frame rate to YouTube’s guidance, use CBR and the recommended keyframe interval, test bandwidth with 20% headroom and monitor stream health. |
| The stream ends unexpectedly | The FFmpeg process, computer or connection may have stopped, or the playlist may have ended. | Inspect the encoder and connection, determine whether the list exhausted, and test any restart or backup-encoder procedure before relying on it. |
