No—not directly. YouTube does not provide a built-in option to select a playlist, including a private one, and broadcast its videos as a live stream. A private playlist is visible only to you and people you choose. A YouTube live stream has its own visibility setting, which controls access to the broadcast but does not change who can view the playlist or its videos.
Why a private playlist cannot be used as a live-stream source
YouTube’s documented live-stream setup sends a live feed from a webcam, mobile device, or encoder. It does not document a native “play this playlist live” source. An encoder can send a feed to YouTube, but that is a separate production workflow—not a way to bypass the permissions on private source videos. This distinction follows from YouTube’s published playlist and live-stream rules; YouTube does not describe playlist playback as an access workaround.
Keep the two controls separate: playlist privacy governs access to the source videos, while live-stream privacy governs access to the broadcast. Making a live stream private or unlisted does not grant its viewers permission to watch private videos used in a production.
What each YouTube visibility option allows
| Option | Who can watch | Link and discovery |
|---|---|---|
| Private playlist | You and people you choose. | It cannot be shared by URL and does not appear in search or recommendations. Check each video’s privacy too: private videos are also access-restricted. YouTube Help: Change video privacy settings |
| Unlisted playlist | Anyone with the link. | The link can be shared or reshared, so unlisted is not confidential or restricted to named listeners. An unlisted video may appear in search if someone adds it to a public playlist. YouTube Help: Change playlist privacy setting — Computer |
| Public playlist | Anyone. | It can be shared and may appear in search, related videos, and recommendations. YouTube Help: Change playlist privacy setting — Computer |
| Private or unlisted live stream | Access depends on the broadcast’s own visibility setting. | This setting applies to the live stream, not the privacy of its source playlist or videos. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder |
| Members-only live stream | Eligible channel members. | Availability is limited to desktop streams that are not vertical, according to YouTube’s current help guidance. Membership controls access to the broadcast; it does not make a private playlist usable as a source. YouTube Help: Members-only live streams |
Choose the right approach for your podcast
If listeners should play episodes when they want
Set the playlist to unlisted if access by link is sufficient, and verify that every episode video is also viewable to the intended audience. Anyone who receives the playlist link can pass it on. If you need access limited to selected people, unlisted is not the right privacy level.

If listeners should watch a restricted live broadcast
Create a live stream and set the stream’s visibility separately to private or unlisted, as appropriate. For an encoder workflow, YouTube creates a stream in Studio; you enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key in the encoder, preview its incoming feed, and then go live. This sends a live feed—it does not select or authorize private playlist videos.
If access should depend on channel membership
Members-only live streams may fit eligible channels when the feature is available. YouTube’s help page currently limits availability to desktop streams that are not vertical and recommends testing with an unlisted live stream before broadcasting to members. See YouTube’s members-only live-stream guidance.

Check eligibility and archive limits before scheduling
- Enable live streaming early: YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Its guidance also requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s encoder live-stream guide.
- Plan around the archive limit: YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all; YouTube recommends keeping a local backup. See YouTube Help: Find your live stream archive.
- Test the audience setting: Before a members-only broadcast, YouTube recommends testing the process with an unlisted live stream.
