The example below uses an audio file and MP3 as an adaptable starting point—not a Hindi-specific preset or a tested command.
Understand the streaming setup
FFmpeg and Icecast have separate jobs. FFmpeg reads and encodes the audio, then publishes it to Icecast using a source username and password. Icecast hosts the stream and distributes it to listeners. They can run on the same VPS, although the Icecast documentation describes them as commonly separate components.
This is a continuous live stream, not a downloadable podcast episode or an RSS feed. Listeners tune in to the stream while it is running; it does not, by itself, provide an episode archive or podcast feed.
Install and configure Icecast
Install Icecast using your Linux distribution’s package where available. Configuration paths, package defaults, and service startup commands vary, so use the instructions for the distribution and package on your VPS rather than assuming a universal file path. Before starting the server, configure the public hostname or address, a non-default source password, a separate admin password, the listening address and port, the client limit, and a valid log location. Keep the source password private; avoid exposing it in public material, shell history, process listings, or logs. For production, use a suitably protected way to provide secrets.
The generic documented launch form is icecast -c /path/to/icecast.xml. Treat that as a general command, not a promise about your package’s path or service management. Package-managed deployments may require a different command.

Choose an audio format and encoding settings
MP3 is a practical example when broad listener compatibility matters, but Hindi does not require a particular codec, sample rate, or bitrate. The appropriate settings depend on the audio, desired listening quality, available bandwidth, and the players your audience uses. For speech-only material, mono can use less bandwidth than stereo; listen to a representative sample before settling on a quality level.

ffmpeg -versionreports the binary version. Online FFmpeg documentation is rolling documentation and may not match an older distribution build.ffmpeg -encoderslets you check whether the build includes the selected encoder, such aslibmp3lame. External encoder availability depends on how FFmpeg was built.
Use -map to select the intended audio stream when the input contains multiple tracks. The following template selects the first audio stream, discards video, encodes MP3 at an illustrative 128 kb/s and 44.1 kHz, and sends it to an Icecast mountpoint:

'icecast://source:[email protected]:8000/hindi'This is a template, not a tested command or a guaranteed profile. Replace the input path, secret, hostname, port, and mountpoint with your own values; confirm the selected encoder exists and that Icecast accepts the format. The -re option reads a file at its native rate for live-style streaming. It is generally unnecessary when the input is already a real-time source.

FFmpeg documents Icecast output in the form icecast://username[:password]@server:port/mountpoint. Set metadata if desired. If using a format other than the default content type, specify the appropriate content type explicitly. For an Ogg Vorbis stream, for example, check the matching FFmpeg format, encoder, and content type rather than copying the MP3 options unchanged. The relevant options are documented in the FFmpeg Icecast protocol documentation and the FFmpeg manual.
For live microphone or mixer audio, replace the file input with the correct Linux capture input and device. The exact input syntax depends on the audio subsystem and device available on your VPS; the file-based example does not identify or configure one.

Secure access and make the stream reachable
Allow the selected listener port through both the VPS operating-system firewall and any network firewall provided by the host. The port must be reachable from outside the VPS for public listening. Firewall commands and rules vary by distribution and provider, so use the applicable documentation rather than applying a generic rule blindly.
If the endpoint should use HTTPS, configure Icecast and its certificate accordingly and use FFmpeg’s TLS option for an HTTPS connection. Changing the port alone does not enable TLS. Confirm that the FFmpeg build has the necessary network and TLS support and that the server certificate is correctly configured; FFmpeg’s Icecast protocol documentation describes the protocol options.
Start the source and verify the listener path
- Start Icecast using the service command or configuration path for your Linux package. Check the Icecast log for startup errors.
- Run FFmpeg with the correct input, source credentials, server address, port, and mountpoint. Watch its output for connection or encoding errors.
- Check Icecast’s status in the admin stats page. The basic setup guide describes a stats URL commonly found at
/admin/stats.xslon the configured host and port. Confirm that the source connection appears. - Test the public mountpoint from a different network or device using an audio player. A local test alone does not confirm that listeners outside the VPS can reach the stream.
The listener URL is the server address and port followed by the mountpoint. Icecast also documents an .m3u playlist form. Keep mountpoint names short and free of spaces or unusual characters. The Icecast guide recommends an .ogg suffix for Ogg Vorbis; MP3 mountpoints usually omit extensions. See Icecast’s basic setup guide for its mountpoint guidance.
Troubleshoot common failures
- FFmpeg cannot connect: Check that Icecast is running, the hostname and port are correct, and the source password matches. Verify that the listener port is allowed through both the VPS and provider firewalls.
- Icecast rejects the source: Confirm the source username and password, mountpoint, and output format. Check the Icecast log and verify that the server accepts the selected codec and content type.
- The source connects but there is no audible audio: Confirm the input file or capture device is producing sound, inspect stream mapping, and check that the chosen encoder is available. Test the mountpoint in another player.
- Listeners cannot reach the stream: Test from outside the VPS, confirm the public hostname resolves to the right address, and check the listening address and firewall rules.
- HTTPS fails: Check that TLS is enabled and correctly configured at the endpoint, that its certificate is valid, and that the FFmpeg build supports the required TLS functionality. A port change by itself is not a TLS configuration.
- The stream stops when the file ends: A single input file is not automatically an endless playlist. Configure a repeating input or a playlist workflow appropriate to your intended programming; verify its behavior with your installed FFmpeg version before relying on it for continuous operation.
