Her arrival extends the sketch’s familiar joke: while other abductees recount relatively positive encounters, the Raffertys describe experiences that are uncomfortable and chaotic.
Who does Meryl Streep play in the SNL “Close Encounter” sketch?
Streep plays Colleen Rafferty Sr., the mother of McKinnon’s recurring character, Colleen Rafferty. A Rutgers-affiliated media-studies commentary describes the anniversary version as a homecoming for SNL alumni and identifies Streep’s role as a notable first appearance on the show; that “first” characterization is the commentary’s account, rather than an official SNL credit. Read the Rutgers-affiliated commentary.
The sketch also features Pedro Pascal and Woody Harrelson as abductees, with Aidy Bryant and Jon Hamm as the officials questioning them, according to the same commentary. The expanded group lets the sketch set the Raffertys’ accounts against other people’s more favorable stories.
What is the Kate McKinnon alien-abduction sketch with Meryl Streep?
“Close Encounter” is a recurring SNL setup in which people describe being abducted by aliens to officials. The central comic contrast is between abductees who tell comparatively positive stories and Colleen Rafferty, whose account is distinctly unpleasant and disorderly. Bringing in her mother turns that contrast into a family trait: Colleen is no longer the only Rafferty whose experience diverges from the others’ reassuring accounts.

A specialist Meryl Streep archive reports that Streep’s character enters carrying a cigarette and a cup, dressed in a style echoing Colleen’s pastel Hawaiian shirts, and tells her own sexualized abduction story. Those are details reported by the archive, not an official costume record or transcript. See the archive’s account of Streep’s appearance.
How the anniversary sketch differs from the 2015 original
| Version | Cast and setup | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Original, December 5, 2015 | In the Ryan Gosling-hosted episode, Gosling, McKinnon, and Cecily Strong play abductees; Aidy Bryant and Bobby Moynihan play agents, according to TIME. | The sketch establishes the contrast between upbeat abduction accounts and Colleen Rafferty’s uncomfortable one. TIME’s account of the original. |
| Anniversary-special continuation | McKinnon returns as Colleen; Streep plays her mother. Pascal and Harrelson are also abductees, while Bryant and Hamm play officials, according to the Rutgers-affiliated commentary. | The mother’s arrival repeats the contrast across two generations of Raffertys. |
The original was built around McKinnon, Strong, and Gosling—not Streep. TIME’s January 2016 report recounts writers Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell remembering Gosling breaking during rehearsal and the live performance. That recollection helps explain the sketch’s live-comedy appeal, but it does not change its basic premise: the group setting up a contrast for Colleen’s increasingly uncomfortable account.
