Once a video is uploaded and its Premiere is scheduled, you do not need to keep your computer on for the scheduled countdown and playback. A Premiere is a timed release of an uploaded video, not a live broadcast that you operate from your computer. You can join if you want to chat with viewers, but your attendance is optional.
Why the computer can be off
YouTube describes a Premiere as a scheduled event: at the selected time, a countdown begins, and when it ends viewers watch the uploaded video together. Its published instructions do not require the creator’s computer to stay on or the creator to be present for playback. The video must already be uploaded and the Premiere scheduled before you leave.
This is different from streaming live footage from a computer, where a device and streaming setup may need to remain active. A Premiere plays the video you uploaded; it does not depend on your computer continuing to send a live feed.
What happens at the scheduled time
- Before it begins, the public watch page is available to share. Viewers can set a reminder, comment, and use chat.
- At the selected time, the countdown starts. After it ends, viewers watch the video together. They can rewind, but cannot skip ahead beyond the point that has played.
- Viewers can watch on computers, iPhones, iPads, Android devices, and mobile web.
- After the Premiere, the video remains on your channel as a regular upload, and viewers can use chat replay. You can review Premiere performance in YouTube Analytics.
What to check before you leave
- Make sure the video upload is complete.
- Confirm that the Premiere has the intended date and time and appears as scheduled.
- Share the watch page with viewers if you want them to set reminders or join the event.
- If you want to welcome viewers or answer questions, plan to join the watch page from a device. YouTube’s creator tips describe chat, moderation, and talking points as ways to enrich the event, not as requirements for playback.
YouTube recommends scheduling at least 24 hours in advance to give audiences around the world an opportunity to see the thumbnail in their subscriptions feed. This is platform guidance, not a guaranteed audience or performance result.

When a scheduled Premiere may not publish
YouTube identifies a Community Guidelines strike penalty period as an exception: the Premiere will not publish during the freeze period, and you must reschedule it after that period ends. YouTube’s guidance does not promise that every scheduled Premiere will succeed under all account or platform conditions, so check that the event still appears as scheduled before its start.
