To run a podcast as a repeating YouTube Live broadcast, use OBS with VLC installed: add a VLC Video source, load your cleared audio or video files into its playlist, enable Loop Playlist, connect OBS to a YouTube Live stream with its stream URL and key, then test the preview before going live. OBS must stay open on a computer with a stable internet connection for this do-it-yourself setup to keep broadcasting.
Before you build the stream
First confirm that your channel can livestream. YouTube says channels must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube also says streamers must be at least 16 years old. Check the channel’s Live Control Room for current eligibility and status: YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- Choose podcast episodes and any accompanying visuals you have the rights to broadcast publicly. A copy of a recording, artwork, or music bed does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it.
- For prerecorded audio with a static image, you do not need a camera, microphone, capture card, or hardware encoder.
- Install VLC before configuring OBS’s VLC Video source. Match the VLC installation’s bitness to OBS; OBS documents that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
YouTube’s encoder setup also instructs creators to ensure stream materials do not infringe others’ content. OBS and VLC do not grant rebroadcast rights. See YouTube’s encoder-stream guidance and the OBS Media Sources documentation.
Choose how your podcast will repeat
| Playback method | Best for | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Media Source | One local file that should repeat | Can loop a single media file. |
| OBS VLC Video source | A sequence of episodes, tracks, or clips | Plays multiple playlist items; Loop Playlist starts the playlist again after its final item, and Shuffle Playlist randomizes item order. |
For a podcast radio stream with multiple episodes, VLC Video is usually the more useful source because it handles a playlist. Use shuffle only if randomized ordering suits the program; otherwise leave it off to preserve your intended sequence. OBS lists source properties and supported media formats in its Media Sources documentation.

Set up the OBS playlist and scene
- Create a scene: In OBS, add or select a scene for the radio stream. Add a visual source if desired, such as a still image or other cleared visual, and arrange it in the preview.
- Add the playlist source: In the Sources panel, select + → VLC Video. Name the source and confirm.
- Load your media: In the source properties, add the podcast audio or video files to the playlist. Arrange them in the order you want them to play.
- Set repeat behavior: Enable Loop Playlist to restart playback after the final item. Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want a randomized order.
- Check the source: Confirm the preview shows the intended visual and that playback advances through the playlist. If OBS does not offer or play the VLC source, check that VLC is installed and that its bitness matches OBS.
OBS’s source documentation covers playlist properties and the VLC requirement: Media Sources.
Confirm audio reaches OBS
- Open Settings → Audio and select the audio devices you intend to use, following OBS’s Quick Start Guide.
- Start playback from the VLC Video source and watch the audio mixer meters. They should move when the podcast audio plays.
- Listen to a short test recording or private/unlisted stream before the public broadcast. Check for silence, clipping, unexpected desktop audio, and gaps or abrupt transitions between items.
A moving meter confirms signal is reaching OBS, not that the final YouTube mix sounds right. Check the actual preview or test output too.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. Follow YouTube’s encoder stream setup.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. In OBS, open Settings → Stream; choose YouTube if available, or enter the server URL and stream key in the encoder settings.
- Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as the address and password for a stream; someone who obtains the key may be able to send a feed to it. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS. See Manage live stream settings.
- Start streaming from OBS. Wait for the incoming feed and preview in Live Control Room, check that the correct scene and audio are present, then select Go live when you are ready to broadcast.
Choose output settings and protect stream health
Use settings that fit your upload connection and the computer’s capacity; a higher resolution or frame rate requires more bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream bitrate, and notes that network disruption can interrupt delivery. Its encoder guidance recommends RTMP/RTMPS, H.264 video, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval for the listed workflow. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate recommendations before choosing a target.
For one concrete reference point, YouTube’s H.264 guidance lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps. That is not a universal bitrate for other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs. Test with representative motion and audio, review stream health in Live Control Room, and reduce output demands if the connection or computer cannot sustain them. YouTube’s streaming tips cover network stability and monitoring.

Plan for replays and long runtimes
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that a 24/7 broadcast will produce one complete, automatically available replay. If replay access matters, plan to record locally or divide programming into separate sessions, then verify how the resulting replays appear on your channel. YouTube’s encoder guidance is the source for the under-12-hour archive statement.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video source is missing or will not play | VLC is not installed, or the VLC and OBS bitness do not match. | Install VLC; if OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC. Reopen OBS and test the source again. |
| The YouTube preview has no podcast audio | The wrong source/device is selected, playback is paused, or the source is not sending audio into the mixer. | Start playlist playback, inspect OBS’s mixer meters, then check the YouTube preview. Review Settings → Audio. |
| The playlist stops after the last item | Loop Playlist is disabled. | Open VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist. |
| The wrong stream receives the feed, or the encoder cannot connect | The server URL or stream key may be incorrect or belong to another stream. | Compare OBS’s stream settings with the current Live Control Room details. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update OBS. |
| Stream health is poor or the broadcast disconnects | Upload capacity may be insufficient or unstable for the selected bitrate. | Check the connection and Live Control Room health; lower the bitrate or output settings to fit sustained upload capacity, retaining YouTube’s recommended headroom. |
| The stream is live but the replay is incomplete or absent | A continuous stream may exceed YouTube’s stated automatic-archive window. | For important replays, record locally or split the schedule into sessions and confirm the resulting archive behavior. |
