First, find out where the video disappears: compare OBS’s preview and a local recording with the YouTube broadcast. If OBS misses a file too, check the source type, playlist settings, file and scene visibility. If local playback is continuous but viewers see gaps or freezes, investigate OBS performance, the connection and YouTube’s live dashboard instead.
Find out whether OBS or YouTube is skipping the video
Watch the OBS preview and make a local recording, then compare both with the YouTube player or Live Control Room. This separates a playback problem inside OBS from a problem affecting only the outgoing stream.
- Missing in OBS’s preview or local recording: investigate the media source, playlist entry, file, and whether the source becomes hidden during a scene change.
- Continuous in OBS, but missing or frozen on YouTube: check dropped-frame and rendering statistics, encoder load, outbound internet stability, and the YouTube dashboard.
- YouTube replaces the picture or interrupts or ends the broadcast: check the dashboard for copyright or Community Guidelines warnings. This differs from a local playlist advancing past a file.
Without the source type, OBS version, operating system, files, scene setup and log, there is no single certain cause. Treat the settings below as checks, not a guaranteed diagnosis.
Choose the OBS source that matches your videos
| Source | Best fit | Relevant controls | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One local media file | Loop; restart playback when source becomes active; hardware decoding option | OBS documents it as a file source, not a multi-file playlist. |
| VLC Video Source | Multiple local media files in a playlist | Loop Playlist; Shuffle Playlist; Visibility Behaviour; network caching | Requires VLC. 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
OBS distinguishes a Media Source, which can loop one file, from a VLC Video Source, which can play a playlist. For a sequence of study videos, use the VLC source rather than expecting several files in one Media Source to behave as a playlist. See OBS’s Media Sources guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the playlist and visibility settings
- Open the VLC Video Source properties for the source used in the scene and confirm the intended files are present and in the required order.
- Check Loop Playlist. It controls whether playback starts again after the source runs out of files; OBS documents it as On by default.
- Check Shuffle Playlist. Turn it off if the videos must play in a fixed order. OBS documents it as Off by default.
- Check Visibility Behaviour. The documented default is “Stop when not visible, restart when visible.” If the scene changes hide the source, playback may stop and restart when it appears again. Choose a behavior that fits your scene setup.
- Review Network caching if a VLC playlist item is a network stream; OBS documents a 400 ms default. This is not a general fix for local-file skips.
- Confirm VLC and OBS have matching architectures: 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
These are settings to verify, not proof that a particular one caused the problem. The installed OBS version and its actual source properties are authoritative for your setup. OBS’s current VLC source code also describes loop, shuffle and visibility behavior, but it is on a moving branch rather than tied to a specific release.
Test the affected files by themselves
- Open the affected file alone in a Media Source and see whether it plays through in OBS.
- Compare it with one known-good file in the same source and scene.
- Check that the affected file still exists at the referenced path, is readable, and uses a documented media format.
OBS lists video formats including .mp4, .ts, .mov, .flv, .mkv, .avi, .gif and .webm, and audio formats including .mp3, .aac, .ogg and .wav. An extension alone does not establish that every codec inside a container will work. If the file fails alone, test it outside OBS too; if it works alone but not in the playlist, focus on the playlist entry and source behavior. The supported formats and controls are described in the OBS guide.

If the local recording is fine, diagnose stream delivery
A smooth local preview or recording with missing frames on YouTube points away from a playlist skip. OBS notes that scene composition and rendering use GPU resources, and complex scenes or sources add load. If statistics or a reproducible test point to load, simplify the scene or test a lower-resolution copy of the media. Treat this as a hypothesis until the evidence connects load to the problem. See OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide.
OBS defines dropped frames as a connection that is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Investigate outbound connection stability; lowering bitrate may reduce drops in some cases, but it lowers stream quality and does not fix the underlying connection. Follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance.

YouTube recommends checking the encoder output and live dashboard, CPU load, a local archive, and outbound internet when stream quality is poor. If the encoder output and local archive look healthy, this sequence helps narrow the issue to delivery rather than local playback. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide.
Check YouTube only when the interruption looks like a platform action
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. Depending on the issue, it may replace the picture with a placeholder, warn the creator, interrupt or terminate the broadcast, or terminate streams for copyright or Community Guidelines strikes. Check YouTube Studio’s live dashboard when the whole broadcast is interrupted or replaced; this is not an explanation for a local playlist silently skipping one file. Read YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

Playback and monetization are separate questions. In a policy update dated 2025-07-15, YouTube renamed its “repetitious content” policy “inauthentic content” to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible for monetization under the existing rules. The policy describes monetization as requiring materially varied substance and creative, educational or other value; it does not say that every looped stream is automatically disallowed. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Collect the OBS log and note whether the missing video appears in OBS’s preview and local recording, or only on YouTube. Include your OBS and VLC versions, operating system, source type, file formats, scene visibility behavior, and any dropped-frame or rendering statistics. That information helps distinguish source playback from rendering and delivery problems.
