To keep an OBS sleep sounds stream live during a power cut, battery-back up both the streaming computer and the internet equipment it needs, then size that backup for your measured watt load and the outage duration you want to cover. OBS’s automatic reconnect can help after a network interruption; it cannot power a switched-off PC or guarantee that the whole stream will restart unattended.
What can fail during a power cut?
There are three separate links to consider: power for the PC running OBS, power for the router and ONT/modem, and a working connection from your ISP to the streaming service. A local outage can interrupt one or more of them. OBS says dropped frames and disconnections can stem from network conditions outside the software, so a powered PC alone does not ensure the stream stays online. OBS reconnect is software behavior for a stream connection interruption, not backup power. It cannot keep the computer or router running, and a local backup cannot guarantee that an ISP’s wider network remains available during a power cut.
Keep the complete streaming path powered
List the equipment that must stay on for your stream: usually the PC, router, and ONT/modem. Include a monitor only if it must remain on for your plan, such as when you need to see or control the setup during an outage. Do not assume that a router-only UPS will keep a desktop-based OBS stream running.

- Measure the load. Find the actual power draw in watts for each device, ideally while the PC is doing the work it will do when streaming. Add the devices that will share the backup.
- Choose the outcome you need. Decide whether you need to bridge brief interruptions, keep streaming through a longer cut, or shut down cleanly. Those goals need different amounts of stored energy.
- Back up the network equipment too. Connect the router and ONT/modem to backup power if they need to stay online. Check the ISP’s guidance about service availability during local outages; local backup power alone cannot establish that the provider’s network will remain available.
Choose backup by watts and runtime, not a VA label alone
Watts and volt-amperes (VA) are different ratings. Schneider Electric’s UPS guidance recommends checking the attached load against the unit’s capacity. Check both the UPS’s maximum output in watts and its VA rating, and follow the manufacturer’s capacity and headroom guidance.
Runtime depends on the connected load and the battery, so there is no reliable universal runtime figure for an OBS setup. Use the manufacturer’s runtime chart for your measured load. Battery age and condition can also affect the result; test the equipment you actually plan to use.

Schneider Electric India describes UPS devices as emergency backup and protection and home inverters as oriented toward longer-duration household backup in its UPS and inverter guidance. For any option, check the PC and backup-device manufacturers’ compatibility instructions, including transfer behavior and output waveform. In an apartment, verify building-specific installation, permission, ventilation, and service requirements rather than assuming a particular device is suitable everywhere.
Set OBS to reconnect after a network interruption
- Open OBS and go to Settings → Advanced → Automatically Reconnect, the location documented in the OBS settings overview.
- Review the reconnect options in your installed OBS version. The OBS output reference describes configurable retry behavior, including retry intervals that double on successive attempts. UI details and defaults may differ by version or streaming service, so use the settings actually shown in your release.
- Save the settings and test a deliberate connection interruption with your streaming platform. Confirm that OBS reconnects and that the platform shows the live stream again.
If the connection is unstable, OBS recommends investigating the selected server, bitrate, and network conditions. A wired connection can be more stable than Wi-Fi, but it cannot fix an ISP outage or keep equipment powered during a cut. Use OBS’s connection troubleshooting steps to narrow down network problems.

Test recovery after the PC loses power
A full power loss is different from a brief stream disconnection. OBS’s reconnect documentation does not establish that a powered-off computer, OBS, and the streaming service will all resume unattended. Whether that happens depends on your hardware and firmware, operating system, OBS startup configuration, credentials, and streaming platform.
- Save your OBS profile and scene collection. Check that the sleep-sounds source is still available after a restart.
- Run the PC, router, and ONT/modem on the intended backup under the complete streaming load. Confirm the system stays within the backup unit’s output limits and compare actual runtime with the manufacturer’s guidance.
- Before relying on unattended operation, simulate the recovery sequence safely. Confirm what happens when power returns: whether the PC starts, whether OBS opens with the right scene and source, and whether the platform shows the stream live again.
- If any step fails, plan a manual restart or change the specific device or startup configuration, then test again. Do not treat OBS’s network reconnect setting as proof of full power-loss recovery.
