To run sleep music and rain sounds continuously on YouTube with FFmpeg, loop authorized audio and visual files, pace file input for real-time output when needed, encode to YouTube’s current live-stream settings, and send the output to your YouTube ingest URL with a protected stream key. Test the entire setup before making it public: a looping command alone does not provide automatic recovery, monitoring, or a complete archive of a 24-hour broadcast.
What you need before you start
- FFmpeg installed on a computer or server that can stay connected for the intended broadcast.
- Sleep music or rain audio and a visual file that you are authorized to use in a public livestream. Check license terms for livestreaming, attribution, monetization, and repeated playback.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the selected bitrate.
- A YouTube Live stream and its server URL and stream key, copied from YouTube Studio.
- A plan for restarting FFmpeg after an error, checking stream health, and retaining a recording if needed.
“Royalty free” by itself does not establish that a track can be looped in a monetized public livestream. YouTube lists an active stream receiving a copyright strike and a stream matching another copyrighted live broadcast among its copyright-restriction cases. Review YouTube’s live-stream restrictions and the actual license for each asset.
Choose and test the loop before going live
Looping a file
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 input option repeats an input indefinitely. Put input options before the corresponding -i. The -re option, equivalent to -readrate 1, reads file input at its native rate; FFmpeg describes this as useful when output flow speed matters, such as live streaming. It is intended for file input and should not be applied carelessly to an actual live source. Check the installed version’s behavior in the FFmpeg command-line documentation.
Separate audio and video sources
If you use different files for the sound and picture, their durations and loop points must work together. A shorter audio file may end before the visual, or the transition may create silence, a click, a sudden change in ambience, or an apparent sync problem. The documented options do not establish a single tested command for every combination of independent loops, encoding, reconnection, and uninterrupted operation. Test the exact files and transitions you plan to broadcast.

- Check that the audio remains audible and at a consistent level during transitions.
- Run a representative test long enough to expose any duration mismatch or early file termination.
Why there is no universal one-line command here
The right FFmpeg output depends on your files, installed build, chosen codecs, frame rate, resolution, YouTube ingest settings, and whether audio and video are separate inputs. A command that appears to work can still drift, end early, or fail to reconnect. Build and validate the command against your media and the settings below rather than treating an unverified example as a reliable 24/7 configuration.
Create a YouTube stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and open its Live Control Room settings. The encoder workflow is described in YouTube’s live-stream setup instructions.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into your FFmpeg output configuration. Use the ingest address and key YouTube displays for that stream.
- Keep the key private. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, terminal capture, or public log; YouTube treats a stream key like a password.
- If the key is exposed, reset it using the stream-settings controls in YouTube’s stream settings guidance, then update the encoder.
For ordinary encoder ingest, YouTube’s guidance covers RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. FFmpeg supports protocols according to the capabilities of the installed build, so verify that yours can use the protocol you select in the FFmpeg protocols documentation.

Set the encoder to match YouTube’s guidance
These are YouTube’s published recommendations on its encoder settings page; the page does not state a publication year. Treat the values as platform guidance, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain them. Run an upload-speed test and choose a bitrate that remains reliable under your actual conditions.
| Setting or example | YouTube guidance | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| Transport | RTMP/RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure transport. | Confirm the protocol is supported by your FFmpeg build. |
| Rate control | CBR | Configure the encoder for constant bitrate and monitor YouTube stream health. |
| Keyframe frequency | Recommended 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. | Set the interval to match YouTube’s guidance for your frame rate and encoder. |
| Video, 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | Recommended bitrate: 10 Mbps. | Use only if your measured uplink can sustain it reliably. |
| Video, 720p at 30 fps, H.264 | Recommended bitrate: 6 Mbps. | A lower-resolution option may be more stable on a limited uplink. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3; 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1 are listed. | Choose settings appropriate to the source; verify that YouTube receives continuous audio. |
See the full YouTube encoder settings for current details, including codec, sample-rate, and bitrate guidance. High resolution is not inherently better for a stream that drops frames or disconnects because the uplink cannot hold its bitrate.

RTMP/RTMPS or HLS?
| Ingest option | What it involves | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP/RTMPS | YouTube’s general live-encoder path; RTMPS is recommended for encrypted transport. | The straightforward choice for a conventional FFmpeg encoder workflow, provided the installed build supports the selected protocol. |
| HLS | YouTube specifies TS segments, segment durations from one to four seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. YouTube notes higher latency than RTMP. | Use when there is a specific reason and your encoder can meet the required segment and upload format. See YouTube’s HLS setup requirements. |
HLS adds implementation requirements and latency; it is not simply a different URL to substitute into an otherwise identical command.
Test and operate the broadcast
- Start with a private or otherwise appropriate test stream and use the same kind of audio and visual motion intended for the public broadcast.
- Inspect YouTube’s preview and confirm the picture is present, the sound is audible, and the loop transitions behave as expected.
- Check stream-health notices in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing before a live stream and monitoring stream quality during an event; see its live-streaming tips.
- Plan how the FFmpeg process will be restarted if it exits, how you will notice a failure, and how logs will be reviewed without revealing the stream key. These are operational safeguards, not guarantees supplied by FFmpeg or YouTube.
- Decide how to retain the content if you need an archive. YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; a single continuous 24-hour stream is outside that stated condition. Consider a separate recording or an archive workflow that fits your needs.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Stream does not connect | Stream URL or key, ingest protocol, or protocol support in the FFmpeg build. | Copy the current URL and key again from YouTube Studio, confirm the selected RTMP/RTMPS protocol is supported, and check for accidental whitespace or stale settings. |
| YouTube reports unstable stream health | Uplink capacity or output bitrate. | Run an upload-speed test and reduce the target bitrate or resolution to a rate the connection can sustain. |
| Audio becomes silent or breaks at a loop boundary | Audio duration, loop points, or mismatch with the visual file. | Test the boundary directly, check the source files’ durations, and adjust the media or loop design before relaunching. |
| Broadcast stops after an error | FFmpeg process termination or lack of restart supervision. | Review the error output, correct the underlying input, network, or encoder issue, and arrange an independent restart and alerting plan. |
| Stream key may have been exposed | Public script, screenshot, shell history, or log. | Reset the key in YouTube stream settings and replace it in the encoder. |
| No complete 24-hour archive appears | Automatic archive expectations for a long continuous broadcast. | Do not rely on YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic archive condition for a single 24-hour stream; use a separate retention plan. |
