For a single nature clip, add it to OBS as a Media Source and enable Loop. OBS supports common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM, but its documentation does not identify one universally best format or codec for every computer. Start with a file that plays correctly in your setup; MP4 is a reasonable common starting point.
Which video format should you use?
OBS lists these supported video file types for Media Sources: .mp4, .ts, .mov, .flv, .mkv, .avi, .gif, and .webm. The list identifies extensions, not a guarantee that every codec profile inside every file will work on every OBS build, operating system, or graphics setup. OBS Project: Media Sources
If you already have a clip in one of those formats, try it before converting. If you are choosing a format for a new export, MP4 is a practical common choice, but check the actual file in OBS before relying on it for a live broadcast. Compatibility depends on the file as well as the machine and software environment.
MP4 or MKV?
There is no universal winner for looping input footage in the documented format list. OBS’s format guide discusses recording output: it recommends MKV for many recording situations and notes that recordings can be remuxed for compatibility. That recording advice does not mean you should convert a looping source clip to MKV. Choose based on whether your existing file plays reliably in OBS and whether you have separate editing or recording needs. OBS Project: Audio/Video Formats Guide

Loop one nature clip in OBS
- In OBS, select the scene where the footage should appear. Under Sources, click + and choose Media Source.
- Name the source if desired, then select OK.
- In the Media Source properties, enable Local File if it is not already selected, then browse to the nature video.
- Enable Loop. This makes the file play again after playback completes.
- Optionally enable Restart playback when source becomes active if you want the clip to start from the beginning each time the source becomes active. This is separate from Loop.
- Click OK and watch the OBS preview through the end of the clip and into its restart. Confirm that the image and any audio behave as intended before going live.
Use a playlist for multiple clips
For a sequence of nature videos, add a VLC Video Source instead of building a playlist from separate Media Sources. OBS documents that Loop Playlist is enabled by default. This route requires VLC to be installed; for 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies 64-bit VLC. The built-in Media Source does not require VLC. OBS Project: Media Sources
Playback settings and troubleshooting
If the video will not play
- Check that the selected path points to the intended local file and that the file opens in another player.
- Try another supported file you know works, or export a compatible copy and test that in the OBS preview. An extension alone cannot confirm that the file’s codec profile is supported in your particular setup.
- If using VLC Video Source, confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS (64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC).
If playback stutters
First check the source file and the local system configuration. Media Source has an optional Hardware Decoding setting for certain file types when the GPU includes an appropriate decoder; OBS lists it as off by default. You can test it where applicable, but enabling it is not a guaranteed fix. OBS’s hardware-encoding guidance concerns encoding an outgoing stream or recording, not which source-file format decodes or loops best. If the clip restarts at an unexpected time
Check whether Loop and Restart playback when source becomes active are both configured for the result you want. Loop repeats after playback ends; restarting when active controls what happens when the source becomes active again.
Check the footage rights before streaming
A file playing successfully in OBS does not establish that you have permission to broadcast it. Use footage you created or have rights to use in a live stream, and check any license terms for restrictions such as attribution, commercial use, or redistribution. Do not assume that publicly available nature footage is free to rebroadcast.
