It adds a colored glow around the player based on the video; it does not change the stream itself, create the fireplace visuals, or keep the broadcast live. Those are separate viewer and creator functions.
What Ambient mode does—and what it does not do
YouTube describes Ambient mode as a lighting effect that casts colors from the video into the screen’s background. It is a player display effect, separate from the pixels the channel sends in its livestream. YouTube’s Ambient mode instructions explain how viewers control it.
That means Ambient mode can accompany a 24/7 fireplace stream on your screen, but it is not an encoder setting and cannot make the glow appear in every viewer’s broadcast image. Viewers can turn it off, and the setting may not be available in every viewing environment. A creator who wants a glowing fireplace image in the actual stream must include that look in the video being broadcast.
How to turn Ambient mode on or off
On a computer
YouTube’s desktop instructions associate Ambient mode with Dark theme: it is automatically enabled when Dark theme is on. To disable it, open Settings on the watch page and toggle Ambient mode. The glow is a viewing preference, not a change to the channel’s stream.

On Android
- Open the fireplace livestream’s watch page.
- Open the watch-page Settings.
- Choose Additional settings, then Ambient mode, and toggle it as desired.
The exact availability of controls can vary by viewing environment. YouTube’s documented Android path is Settings > Additional settings > Ambient mode.
Ambient mode is not what keeps a 24/7 stream online
A continuous fireplace feed has to be produced and sent to YouTube separately. A creator typically supplies a prepared video through a streaming workflow and monitors the stream; Ambient mode only affects how an individual viewer sees the player. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion, monitoring stream health, and choosing encoder settings that fit the available upload connection. Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so there is no single bitrate that applies to every setup. Archive and rewind are separate from being live
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A 24/7 broadcast should therefore not be relied on to produce a complete automatic archive; keep a separate local recording if preserving the full program matters. This archive warning does not itself say the live broadcast must stop after 12 hours. Details are in YouTube’s archive guidance.
DVR is a different feature: YouTube warns that rewind may be limited or unavailable for very long streams longer than 12 hours. That affects viewers trying to go back within the live broadcast, not whether Ambient mode works. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Check rights for music in the fireplace video
If the stream includes music, make sure the channel has the necessary rights for live use. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the provider to have rights for live content, including applicable music licensing rights. A video being suitable for a relaxing background does not by itself establish permission to broadcast its soundtrack.
