How to Reduce File Size for a 24/7 Nature Video Stream Without Losing Quality

A practical guide to reducing archive storage for a 24/7 nature stream: distinguish live ingest from recording, compare codecs, configure OBS, and test moving foliage, water and low-light footage.

You can reduce storage use for a 24/7 nature stream, but no setting guarantees a smaller file with identical picture quality in every scene. Start by separating the YouTube live feed from your local recording: YouTube’s live guidance calls for constant bitrate (CBR) and short keyframes, while a local archive can use a separate, quality-based recording profile. Then compare codecs and test changes against representative footage—especially leaves, water, low-light noise and other fine movement.

First decide which file you need to make smaller

A stream sent to YouTube and a recording saved on your computer have different jobs. The live feed must meet the platform’s ingestion requirements. A local archive can prioritize visual quality and storage efficiency independently, if your software lets you configure separate streaming and recording encoders.

  • YouTube ingest: Follow the current requirements for the ingest protocol and codec. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe frequency; those live-stream settings are not universal archival targets. YouTube live encoder settings
  • Local recording: Use a recording profile designed around acceptable quality and file size. Quality-based rate control may be appropriate here, but do not substitute it for YouTube’s CBR recommendation on the live feed without checking the platform’s current requirements.
  • Both: Treat the live output and archive as separate problems. A lower live bitrate does not automatically produce a smaller or better local recording.

Estimate archive storage from the recording’s measured average bitrate and duration. As a rough conversion, 1 Mbps sustained for 24 hours is about 10.8 GB of decimal data before container overhead; actual file size varies with bitrate and overhead. Use the bitrate measured by your recording workflow, not a recommended YouTube ingest bitrate, to plan archive capacity.

Choose a codec your whole workflow supports

In OBS, the available hardware and compatibility with the destination matter as much as codec efficiency. OBS’s Audio/Video Formats guide ranks hardware encoder preference as AV1, then HEVC, then H.264, and says AV1 offers improved quality per file size over HEVC. That is a reason to compare supported options—not a guarantee of a particular reduction on nature footage. The reviewed guidance does not establish a universal percentage reduction for switching codecs.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • AV1: Compare it first if your hardware can encode it in real time and your playback, editing and destination workflow can use the output. OBS cautions that software AV1 real-time encoding requires high-end CPUs, so it may not be suitable for every always-on computer.
  • HEVC: A possible efficiency step over H.264 when your encoder and playback/editing chain support it.
  • H.264: A broadly familiar option, but it may need more bitrate than AV1 or HEVC for comparable quality. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists all three formats; do not infer from that list that every other ingest protocol supports all three.

Compare the same source segment at the same output resolution and frame rate. Check fine branches, rippling water, moving animals and dark scenes, where foliage, motion and sensor noise can expose quality loss. Also check sustained encoder performance: a more efficient codec is not useful if your system cannot keep up continuously.

Set up a more efficient local recording in OBS

Menu names and available options can vary by OBS version, operating system and encoder hardware. OBS’s guidance on NVENC advanced options is specifically for OBS 31.0; confirm the option exists in your installed version and on your GPU before building a profile around it.

  1. Check what OBS can encode. Open Settings > Output and inspect the output mode and available recording encoders. If AV1 hardware encoding is available, compare it with HEVC; otherwise, compare supported HEVC and H.264 options. Do not assume every machine exposes the same encoders.
  2. Keep the recording settings separate from the live settings. In Settings > Output, use the recording controls rather than changing the live encoder profile. Keep YouTube ingest at its required live settings; for YouTube RTMP/RTMPS, the cited guidance recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe frequency.
  3. Try quality-based rate control for the archive. If the recording encoder offers CQP or another quality-based mode, test it on representative clips. OBS 31.0’s NVENC variable bitrate with target quality behaves similarly to CQP while adding a maximum bitrate, which can cap file size. This option is encoder- and version-dependent, and is intended here for recording—not as a replacement for YouTube’s CBR live recommendation.
  4. Compare short test recordings. Record clips containing the scene’s real movement and difficult detail. Compare them at normal viewing size, not only in a paused frame, and check the resulting file sizes and encoder load.
  5. Adjust resolution or frame rate only if needed. Lower output resolution or frame rate reduces OBS rendering and encoding load, and can reduce data, but it also removes spatial detail or temporal smoothness. Try alternatives in short clips before changing a 24/7 profile. OBS’s suggestion to try 30 fps when 60 fps is not working is a performance fix, not a blanket recommendation for nature video.
  6. Choose a container for recovery and compatibility. OBS describes MKV as flexible and recoverable after an interrupted recording; some editing software may require remuxing it to another container. Fragmented MP4/MOV can fit common upload and editing workflows. Container choice mainly affects recovery and downstream compatibility, not the primary compression improvement.
  7. Keep a record of the working profile. Note the OBS version, encoder, codec, rate-control settings, resolution, frame rate and container. Recheck stream health, recording continuity, file size and picture quality after software or driver updates.

Keep YouTube’s live settings distinct from archive settings

The following are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates in its RTMP/RTMPS live encoder guidance accessed on 2026-10-03. They are platform ingest recommendations, not tested ideal settings for every scene, camera or local archive. Confirm the current page before a live setup because platform guidance can change.

Ingest resolution and frame rate AV1 or HEVC H.264
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
720p at 30 or 60 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s guidance lists H.264, HEVC and AV1, up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. It recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio for this live path. An archive containing high-fidelity nature ambience may have different audio needs; the cited sources do not establish an ideal archival audio setting.

YouTube also documents HLS ingestion separately. Its HLS requirements specify muxed M2TS, H.264 or HEVC, AAC, a closed GOP and up to 60 fps; YouTube describes HLS as a high-quality/high-resolution option with relatively higher latency. These HLS requirements do not establish AV1 support for HLS. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements.

Test for quality loss before changing the continuous profile

Use clips from the actual camera and scene rather than a static test image. A quiet, still view can hide compression problems that become obvious when leaves move, water ripples, rain falls or an animal crosses the frame. Low-light sensor noise can also consume bitrate without adding useful scene detail.

  1. Record a representative sample using the current profile as a baseline.
  2. Change one variable at a time—codec, rate control, resolution or frame rate—so you can identify what caused a difference.
  3. Compare the clips at the size and display quality viewers will use. Look for blockiness, smearing, banding, lost fine detail and motion judder.
  4. Check file size and whether the encoder can sustain the setting without overload. A smaller sample file is not a successful change if the continuous stream or recording becomes unstable.
  5. Repeat across different conditions, including the darkest and most active parts of the scene, before adopting the profile.

YouTube Help advises: “Make sure that you test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Apply the same principle to a local archive: test with similar movement and sound, not just a still frame. The advice appears in YouTube’s live encoder guidance.

Common file-size and quality problems

  • The archive is still large after switching codecs: Compare equivalent clips and settings before concluding that the codec change helped. Scene complexity, motion and noise affect bitrate; there is no universal file-size reduction established for nature-camera footage.
  • The image looks soft or motion looks uneven: Restore the previous resolution or frame rate, or retest a less aggressive change. Fewer pixels or frames can shrink data, but they also remove detail or smoothness.
  • The recording encoder overloads: Check sustained system and encoder load. Try a hardware encoder supported by the system, or a less demanding profile. Software AV1 may need a high-end CPU for real-time encoding.
  • YouTube rejects or struggles with the live feed: Verify the ingest protocol, codec, CBR mode, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate and bitrate against YouTube’s current requirements. Do not use a quality-based local recording mode as the live ingest configuration by assumption.
  • A power interruption leaves a recording difficult to use: Consider recording to MKV, which OBS identifies as recoverable after interruption, then remux if your editing or upload workflow needs another container. Confirm your chosen tools support the resulting format.
  • The clip looks fine but the 24/7 system is unreliable: Validate the complete continuous workflow, not only an isolated encode. Monitor stream health and recording continuity, then repeat checks after updates to OBS, drivers or encoder software.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded nature footage looping on YouTube without leaving an encoding computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops uploaded video in the cloud. It does not go live from a camera and streams to YouTube only.
