Create a festival playlist calendar by choosing observances that genuinely fit your audience, checking dates against official and local references, and assigning each video a workable production plan. India’s observances vary by region and tradition, so a national calendar is a starting point—not a mandate to cover every festival.
1. Define the channel’s scope before choosing dates
Start with the viewers and documentaries your channel serves. Write down the languages you publish in, the regions your audience identifies with, the subjects you cover, your formats, and how many videos your team can produce without sacrificing quality.
For a documentary channel, a festival may fit through its history, regional traditions, music, foodways, crafts, pilgrimage routes, community life, or changing social meaning. Choose subjects that match your editorial remit and viewers. An all-India list of holidays is not a content checklist, and not every observance needs a video.
2. Build a date list and verify it for your audience
Use a current official calendar as a scaffold, then check local or tradition-specific references for observances relevant to the audience you intend to serve. Government calendars may differ in which dates and categories they include. A date can also be interpreted or observed differently by place or tradition, so verify it before publishing a dated video, announcement, or thumbnail.

The following are representative 2026 date anchors from the UIDAI calendar, not a complete festival calendar. Confirm local applicability before using them in a release plan:
- 14 January 2026: Makara Sankranti / Magha Bihu / Pongal.
- 4 March 2026: Holi.
- 21 March 2026: Id-ul-Fitr, as listed in the UIDAI calendar; verify the locally applicable date.
- 26 August 2026: Onam or Thiru Onam Day.
- 20 October 2026: Dussehra.
- 8 November 2026: Diwali (Deepavali).
- 24 November 2026: Guru Nanak’s Birthday.
The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs calendar also lists Holi on 4 March, Dussehra on 20 October, and Diwali on 8 November 2026. The India Meteorological Department’s Rashtriya Panchanga presents festival correspondences with the national and Gregorian calendars. These are useful cross-checks, not substitutes for confirming the observance relevant to your viewers. 3. Turn candidate dates into a production slate
Record each selected observance in a spreadsheet, editorial calendar, or other planning tool. Include enough detail that a date becomes an actionable assignment rather than just an idea.
- Audience and region: Who is this for, and which local observance or interpretation is relevant?
- Documentary angle: What specific story will the video tell?
- Format: For example, a short explainer, a reported documentary, an interview-led film, or an archival essay.
- Owner and milestones: Name the person responsible and note research, filming, edit, fact-check, and approval dates.
- Release window: Choose a timing that serves the video’s purpose and your audience. YouTube’s official guidance reviewed here establishes no universal number of days or weeks to publish ahead of a festival.
- Date-check status: Record the calendar or local reference checked, when it was checked, and whether the date needs another confirmation.
- Effort and reuse: Note production cost and whether an existing format, footage, or related video can be responsibly reused.
When deciding what makes the slate, compare regional relevance, connection to the channel’s subject, date certainty, production effort, and whether a familiar format can be reused without making the coverage feel generic. YouTube recommends grouping content by dimensions such as format, intended audience, topic longevity, and production cost, then looking for patterns in Analytics across a wide period. Apply that as a planning method—not as a promise that festival videos or playlists will increase reach. YouTube Analytics guidance for content groups.

Ordinary playlist or official series playlist?
| Choice | Use it for | Eligibility and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary playlist | Browsing a topic, region, year, or format; a flexible annual collection. | YouTube’s playlist-management guidance covers creating and managing playlists. Source: YouTube Help. |
| Official series playlist | Videos intended to be watched together as an official set. | The account must be verified; each video can appear in no more than one series playlist; included videos must be uploaded by you and you must have the necessary rights. Source: YouTube Help. |
Use the series designation selectively. A collection of unrelated festival documentaries may be easy to browse as an ordinary playlist, but it does not become a series merely because the videos share a calendar year.

After each major release window, compare the planned slate with what the team actually produced. Group videos by useful dimensions—such as format, audience, topic longevity, and production effort—and review patterns in Analytics over a broad period. Decide which subjects merit a new treatment, which formats are sustainable, and which ideas should be dropped. Treat those observations as editorial inputs, not a forecast of future performance.
