In OBS Studio, go to Settings > Video and set Common FPS Value to 30. Then check the output resolution and encoder settings separately. Choosing 30 fps is only one part of reliability: a nonstop stream also depends on stable upload bandwidth, an encoder your computer can sustain, monitoring, and a backup plan.
Set OBS to 30 fps
- Open OBS Studio and select Settings.
- Select Video.
- Set Common FPS Value to 30. OBS recommends matching this setting to the frame rate you want to send; see the OBS Studio overview guide.
- Check Output (Scaled) Resolution. This is the resolution OBS sends to YouTube. Base (Canvas) Resolution is the workspace used to arrange sources; it is not necessarily the stream’s output resolution. Choose an output resolution your content and connection can support.
- Select Apply, then OK.
Frame rate and resolution are separate choices. Thirty frames per second can be suitable for many documentary streams, but it does not automatically make a stream stable or reduce the output resolution. A lower resolution may need less bitrate, which can help when upload capacity is limited.
Choose resolution and bitrate
YouTube’s H.264 guidance recommends different bitrates for 30 fps at different resolutions. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a particular computer or internet connection can sustain them. Confirm the current figures in YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

There is no universally best choice between 720p30 and 1080p30. Consider the detail in the footage, the bitrate your connection can maintain reliably, and your computer’s encoding capacity. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom above the total outgoing bitrate; if other devices or applications use the connection, account for that traffic too. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Set YouTube-compatible encoder options
In OBS, open Settings > Output and review the streaming output and encoder controls available on your system. Labels and available options can vary by operating system, hardware, and OBS version, so check the settings shown in your installation rather than assuming every encoder exposes identical controls.
- Rate control: Use CBR for YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance.
- Keyframe interval: Set 2 seconds if the encoder exposes this option. YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Bitrate: Choose a value from YouTube’s guidance for your selected resolution and codec, then verify that your upstream connection has sufficient capacity and headroom.
- Encoder load: Test the selected encoder under realistic conditions. OBS notes that 60 fps can tax a system more than 30 fps; that does not remove the need to test a 30 fps setup.
Use YouTube’s encoder settings page to check the current requirements before a long broadcast. Encoder requirements and OBS controls may change.

Test before relying on a long stream
- Run a test stream before the broadcast, using representative footage, motion, and audio. YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. Watch for connection or encoding problems rather than assuming the OBS frame-rate setting guarantees delivery.
- Monitor both audio and video while the stream is live. Confirm that the local recording is being written and that the resulting file is usable.
- If you have a backup encoder, test switching to it before you need it. YouTube recommends testing failover where a backup encoder is available.
YouTube recommends a reliable connection and upload capacity for the total outgoing bitrate plus headroom. Network disruption can break a stream; no frame-rate setting can prevent that. For details, see its streaming tips.
Plan for YouTube’s long-stream archive limits
“Nonstop” is a reliability goal, not an OBS setting or a promise that YouTube will keep one session running and archived indefinitely. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If the recording matters, keep a local recording and check that it is complete. Troubleshoot an unstable stream
