To enable live streaming on a new YouTube channel, verify the channel in YouTube Studio and make sure it has had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. You must be at least 16 to start a live stream. The 50-subscriber requirement and possible wait of up to 24 hours apply to the YouTube mobile app—not, based on YouTube’s published guidance, to every streaming method.
Enable live streaming in YouTube Studio
- Open channel feature settings. On a computer, sign in to YouTube Studio. Select Settings, then Channel, then Features.
- Verify your phone number. Under Features that require phone verification, select Verify phone number and follow the prompts. YouTube says phone verification unlocks live streaming. YouTube’s phone verification instructions explain the process.
- Check live-stream eligibility. YouTube’s general requirements include a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days. The person starting the stream must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Choose a streaming method. YouTube lists mobile, webcam, encoder, and console streaming. Follow the setup flow for the method you intend to use. YouTube’s general eligibility guidance does not establish a universal 24-hour activation delay for every method.
For a Brand Account, an owner or manager can verify a phone number. For a channel without a Brand Account, only the owner can do so.
Choose the method that fits your first stream
| Method | What to know |
|---|---|
| Mobile app | Requires at least 50 subscribers, channel verification, live streaming enabled, and no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. YouTube says the first mobile live stream may take up to 24 hours to become available. |
| Webcam | YouTube lists webcam streaming from a computer. The general eligibility rules still apply; the cited guidance does not specify a subscriber minimum for this method. |
| Encoder | YouTube lists encoder streaming as an option. The particular software, hardware, and configuration depend on the encoder workflow you choose. |
| Console | YouTube lists console streaming as an option. Consult the console’s current setup flow for device-specific steps. |
The mobile-specific requirements are documented in YouTube’s mobile live-streaming instructions. Do not treat the 50-subscriber threshold as a general requirement for webcam, encoder, or console streams.
What to expect on mobile with fewer than 1,000 subscribers
YouTube may limit the number of viewers on mobile live streams from channels below 1,000 subscribers, and mobile stream archives may be set to private by default. Reaching 1,000 subscribers does not necessarily remove those limitations immediately; YouTube says it may take several weeks. Check the archive’s visibility settings if you want viewers to be able to watch it afterward.

If live streaming is still unavailable
- Phone verification is missing: Return to YouTube Studio → Settings → Channel → Features and complete Verify phone number.
- The wrong account role is trying to verify: For a Brand Account, have an owner or manager complete phone verification. For a channel without a Brand Account, the owner must do it.
- The channel has a recent restriction: YouTube’s general eligibility rule requires no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check the channel’s status and wait until any applicable restriction period ends.
- You are trying to stream from the mobile app below 50 subscribers: The mobile app has that subscriber threshold. Consider one of YouTube’s other listed methods, such as webcam, encoder, or console streaming, if appropriate.
- You enabled mobile streaming but cannot start immediately: YouTube says the first mobile live stream may take up to 24 hours to become available. That delay is stated for mobile; the general eligibility guidance does not establish the same wait for every method.
